But, it's a tourist trap now, mainly domestic travelers. It's so crowded, one can hardly walk, let alone stroll leisurely. If you want to buy anything, you have to stand in a long line. Shanghai natives usually avoid East Nanjing Road (walking street), and they go to Huaihai Road, or West Nanjing Road instead. If you are a laowai (foreign) tourist, you should avoid it, as the locals do.
