This GrimDark fanfiction reminds me of the final scene in the horror film "The Mist," where a father had only enough bullets to mercy kill all but himself in a group of those struggling to survive in an apocalyptic environment. Mere moments later, a rescue team arrived.
That's what it's based off of. Good job catching the reference!
The first thought that came to my mind was "The Mist" when I heard the ending! Still gets to me to this day.

All she had to do was wait...but her empathy for her friends pain ironically killed Trixie instead of helping her

When Twilight mentioned it was very curable my heart broke even more..
This is probably the scariest audio reading I've ever heard (and no I don't typically listen to grimdarks or any extreme horror stories in general). Up until the part where the cause of the flesh-eating disease was brought up, I was assuming that you probably based it off of a flesh-eating disease that has plagued people in real life (boy would that have made the story more horrifying and probably a bit better if _that_ were the case), still everyone did a good job in this reading!
