  • I found an older file in my basement and wanted to try bringing it back to life. I had heard vinegar will remove the rust as well as sharpen the file. I figured it was worth 3 bucks for a gallon of vinegar to give it a go....

Thank you so much that you give me a hint. I try this way from 2019 spring, it works great but I need 24 hours more depend on temperature, also I use cooking vinegar so I guess need more time than you. Anyway it help to stop waste file, and can cut very sharp after liquid sharpening.

I see what you are doing, however you should put baking soda with the vinegar, the chemical reaction works much better, but thank you for bringing to me the easy fix

briangallop8946 Why would you soak them in vinegar (acetic acid) if you're just going to neutralize it with sodium bicarbonate?

Make sure to stop the vinegar from reacting further with a bit of a soak in baking soda and water afterwords!

Hi Ken, 4 days would have cleaned them for sure :). Maybe even some metal wear there as the vinegar can be tough on metal after aa long time.

Hello My name is journeyman carpenter Richard Muenzer. And before you start asking about the word journeymen,,,,yes I am a journeymen Carpenter graduating 2001 to get it. Now sir will you please clean that rasp, and you're not done,, you've cleaned them,(except for the RASP you left that Rusty) and you've done a good job..next time try some wd-42 with the vinegar. Now comes the hard part SHARPENING. It's called stitching, you get to do it by hand. Or restitching a file or rasp by hand. You will need a few tools you won't have a file stitcher I already know that. So we're going to have to use some center punches tool steel hardened you will also need their big brother the metal chisel you can also use a 1 in and 1/2 inch wood chisel they're both Total steel grade. Next up the ball peeing hammer. And last but not least a firm place to put the whole thing on top of a good table anvil would be preferred you don't have one it's okay neither do I. Put file on table pick up chisel go to the bottom of the file it's at the handle in in case you didn't know where the bottom of the file was. Find the groove put the knife of the chisel in the groove lift up to a 60°, and strike the chisel with the ball being hammer repeat all the way down it. That is how you really resharpen a chisel or a rasp. After you've cleaned it in an acid bath, oh the type of acid we use is, you guessed it "Drano" ((read the ingredients)) please understand I'm not trying to harp on you or tap on you or scold you. I'm just trying to help you out because I want you to keep doing what you're doing keep going forward keep learning. I want you to build the prettiest box you've ever built in your entire life,,a ''doll house' for your granddaughter,,, good luck 🤞🤞🤞

Fail. You could have used the wire brush or file card without soaking in fkn Vinegar and got the Same result. Silly old Wives tale.
