As a Philmont staffer and filmmaker I've watched a lot of Philmont videos (mostly to see if I'm in them), and I have to say this is definitely one of, if no the best videos I've seen from this summer.
My crew went on a very similar deck this summer and only one day off. It was life changing. I was so nervous having very little backpacking experience but I decided to go and I would never make a different choice. I was feeling so homesick on the trail and I’d say now I’m feeling pretty philmont sick. I miss it so much and this video has just reminded me how beautiful and awe inspiring it is. Thank you.
This is really cool, I just did my treck in 2021 and we had actually stayed at a few of the same camps, I’m going back this summer (2022) on an individual treck and can’t say how excited I am. Watching your video really brought up some fond memories and had gotten me even more excited for when I go back.
Great video... Philmont was a blast for me to experence three timed....... Last trip was in 1977. have side triped through Philmont... Deture sorta 200 miles or so... Dang well worth the trip... I earned my Eagle in 1979....
Thank you for posting this. I was 14 in 1981 when my troop went to Philmont. It was a trip I'll never forget. Our itinerary took us through much of the same country. Black Mtn was soggy for us too. Some things don't change. This was made more poignant to me since I turned 50, July 26, 2017, in icu of the cardiac unit in a Tulsa hospital. It was a rough time for my family, but God has brought us through. Watching this video brought many memories back. The footage on the Tooth of Time was perfect. Thanks again.
I was working at Philmont last summer and I recognized some of the staff in your video! I really enjoyed watching this. Philmont is such a special place and it's full of amazing people. I was tearing up watching the part of the crew on the Tooth of Time. Incredible sunrise, isn't it? Can't wait to return. :)
Andy & crew, thank you so much for this video, and for keeping me on your list to receive such things. As I watched, I recognized almost every campsites, a few of which I remember from 1966 & 67, when I was there as a scout. In 1992, I returned for the first time as an adult; I was 40 years old. Between then and my retirement from the Scoutmaster position with the troop, I went to Philmont eight times, making for me a total of ten Philmont treks. Not only was your film a journey for me to the sites of my past, it also showed the endearing interactions between crew members, making me sad that I did not get to take you guys to Philmont myself, because I would have enjoyed leading you, and then teaching you to lead yourselves. Philmont is the best place for scouting to happen, and for scouts to challenge themselves and take care of each other. You guys are cool, and I am sorry our times in scouting did not align. Andy, please thank your crew for me, Mr. Kelley. And tell Sam I liked his hair notches ...
Thank you for the support, and I'm glad you liked the video! I'm very glad to see that my work is helping people to live these experiences with me, and I will be sure to pass your compliments along to Sam.
6-24 Yankee changed my life. Philmont was such an experience. I remember it as it was yesterday and your video brought me back to some of the same activities/campsites I did this year. Thank you for sharing your story
Great video! If anyone's wondering, the song they sang at the closing campfire is Little Talks by Of Monsters And Men. It was bugging me cause I knew I'd heard it before but couldn't place it. Leaving this comment here in case anyone has a similar experience.
2017 trek here as well, we came around 2 weeks after your trek. The water from the rain literally created new rivers where small streams used to be up to waist deep around "fish camp". Also, i wish Comanche peak was that comfy when we camped there, when we went it was snowing and nearly 0 degrees lol.
"Adventure of a lifetime" is right. My son and I were on 720 Sierra 2 in 2019 together. That trip is something special we will always share. Oh, and your look back at the Tooth down to the base camp entrance does not do the switchbacks justice.
was in South country and went from Obreu to fish camp in two days did you stop to camp in the alpine meadow a few thousand feet above obreu? I cannot remember the name of the camp for the life of me I remember though that it was strenuous eleven mile hike in a storm. the worst experience in Philmont I ever had..
Great video! Our Troop has two crews that are scheduled to go in August unless the fire prevents us. Its fun to see others videos. What equipment were you shooting with. What do you wish you would have brought that you left behind? Thanks!
I went 27 years ago. I am now planning a trip with my son and his troop. Great video.

I shot with a basic Canon point and shoot, make sure to bring extra batteries, there's a lot to film at Phimont!
Thank you! Keep up the good work.
