+jayremitz Doesn't matter when you were born; you can appreciate it whenever you want. I wouldn't be born for two decades after the release of this song, and I still appreciate the hell out of it. I quite enjoy the recent Disturbed cover, but the original has a character that can't quite be replicated.
I'm actually rather happy to listen to this right now on youtube rather than in 1966 waiting for the next missil crisis (cuba crisis was only four years ago)^^. Good music will always be good music, and time help them to shin through the masses and add new good music to the set (a 16 years old in 1966 might have loved to be this young in 2003 for seven nation army for example).
I definitely appreciate the Disturbed version over this one in all bluntness, the 1966 version and all its added instruments pretty much killed the mood of the song for me. I very like the true original though, it's my prefered version despite turning into an unappreciated flop back in 1964.
@@bradsimpson8724Think you missed my point. It may not matter when you were born, and to say that anyone can appreciate this song regardless of what generation you're from is kind of an overstatement of the obvious. Producer Tom Wilson at Columbia Records rescued this obscure acoustic LP track by dubbing in electric instruments to emulate a Byrds-like folk-rock sound that he could turn it into a releasable 45 single. It worked beyond anyone's wildest belief, providing new life to the nearly defunct S&G duo (who had no idea at the time that this had been done) and propelling them to superstar status at Columbia. It was the first of their 14 US Top 20 hits and their first of four national number one records.
