Lovely animations, but Tyrone's proxy war isn't a theory. The modern troops deployed by Maguire in 1593-4 were all Tyrone's household troops from Dungannon (dressed in red cassocks), and the earl's Spanish advisor Pedro Blanco was present at Ford of the Biscuits.

Pinning this. Thanks for the clarification James! Also, if anyone reading this is looking to learn more about the Nine Years War (from someone that's actually qualified) Check out "The Nine Years War, 1593-1603: O'Neill, Mountjoy and the Military Revolution" by James O'Neill! :)

Thankfully Gaelic Ireland in spite of centuries of suppression in Ulster and Ireland generally is experiencing a renaissance not narrow nationalism as part of a progressive Europe not subject or harping back to a imperial past beloved by some in North East Ulster! PS It's a wonder the Gaels survived at all post 9 years war and subsequent plantations a witness to the tenacity of the original inhabitants in spite of Elizabeth's genocidal wars on the Island!

    • @icemanire5467

Ironic comment as progressive is the very death of Ireland. Killing a culture for a default pan global culture. Demonizing the past plantations, yet facilitating the new one.

    • @barra6709

Funny enough it's "progressive" ideology that kills culture and it's most certainly dying a death in Ireland. We can't blame the Brits for that.

The Red Hand of Ulster - (Lámh Dhearg Uladh)
The Red Hand of Ireland - (Lámh Dhearg Éireann)
The red hand was an associated symbol of many things within the O'Neill clan as like any Irish clan they didn't just want their symbol to rule over only the likes of Tyrone but the whole island of Ireland.

Ignorant people who are either from the British mainland or descendants from planters in Northern Ireland who consider themselves British,Loyalist and Unionist are again confusing Ulster and Northern Ireland. There is 9 counties in the province of Ulster. Six of these counties(Armagh,Antrim,Derry/Londonderry,Down,Fermanagh and Tyrone) comprise the state of Northern Ireland. The other three counties(Donegal,Cavan and Monaghan) are in the Republic of Ireland. Obviously Ulster and Northern Ireland share numerous counties but they are not the same geographical landmass. So Ulster is not British. Simple geography lesson.
