That's why Dredge is my favorite killer, scary and badass design, ominous music, fun power, actual presence, scare potential. Dredge brought back what DBD needed, but sadly it looks like it's not the direction BHVR is taking. I hope we see more killers like The Dredge in the future.
I think the Dredge is the scariest original killer in dbd, with the feeling that something might jump out of the locker next to you, or the feeling of dread nightfall brings. It was something the devs made well and with the release of Sadako, wesker and knight things were looking good. And then the skull merchant came out.
I agree on most things, except the Knight not being scary. He's more intimidating than creepy, but I do think he fits reasonably well. Im surprised to learn that people like the new chapter. All I saw were disappointed reaction on twitter.
Practically nobody likes the new chapter. Its just that all the twitter activists were loud. Like I have not seen the new killer even once since release and her trailer/reveal is the most disliked BHVR video
And what’s wrong with her being a girlboss, bestie?😌 Reported this video for being sexist 💅 (Insert gif of celebrity laughing) I am so glad you put the “this is literally how women walk… go outside?” tweet. That was soo funny for me, like now suddenly every single woman is built like the venus figurines and they walk like a supermodel on a balenciaga fashion runway 😂 The fact that people said that she was not sexualised when even BHVR themselves sexualized her, and the fact that people clowned on me because I Inmediately saw the SM skin as fanservice was wild.
Fun Fact: When Skull Merchant first dropped, there were NSFW artists refusing to draw her because of how lame her design was. They made a killer to appeal to a group that ultimately rejected her on day 1. Let that sink in.
@@hallowseve5801 Well it is better than her default tho Also u kno about the NSFW artist refusing her so u were obv interested to see if they do artwork of her just sayin ur just as guilty as me
I mostly agree with your points here. I disagree on the front that I think sexiness has a place in horror, given how closely sex and horror have been intertwined since the birth of the genre. The dating sim is mostly harmless, as are the skins. The problem is when the part that’s scary is sacrificed for the part that’s sexy. That’s where I’m in total agreement with you. I think Trickster works because his backstory and tome lore establish him as someone with a position of power who’s incredibly deranged. And male kpop idols in real life are kind of awful human beings. There’s literally a former member of one of the most popular boy groups of all time, EXO, who is in jail because he’s a serial rapist. I think the dichotomy of his looks and his psychopathy is interesting. He would be less interesting if he were a metal artist. And that also reinforces the false narrative that metal is evil. His design is also at least very coherent and consistent, they did their research. Skull Merchant doesn’t work because her design is incoherent and she has a bad story. Lastly, as a gay person, I was incredibly disappointed by how the Twitter gay crowd reacted to Skull Merchant. I really don’t understand why they chose to latch on to her as a slay girlboss when her design is that abysmal. I get rooting for the underdog, but nothing about her was genuine. Bad design and gameplay should be called out.
Yeah, trickster is well designed and very interesting as a character. But in game he just isnt scary, hes just a guy. Not menacing or threatening by any means.
Idk, I think there's room for both. Silly fun skins are neat, and help your characters stand out when you play the same game for 10k plus hours or whatever But I also think the darker more chilling atmosphere of the game is gone. It's shifting from horror themed to horror inspired. Not much in the way of atmospheric sounds, darker maps, etc. I get some had to be changed for balance but it's really being brought down. As far as the dating Sim stuff went, I thought it was a fun silly side project. KFC didn't dilute their brand with their dating Sim or soap opera movie, star wars didn't dillute their brand with the robot chicken special, foo fighters didn't dilute their brand with a horror comedy making fun of themselves. It's fun, but I tend to agree that fan service is getting a bit much recently in the game
Yeah I honestly didn't mind the dating sim because I just class it as a goofy non-canon thing, doesn't have to tie into the game, and the shirtless skins and stuff I just think are goofy, but still I suppose on brand for horror considering a lot of 80's horror was girls I skimpy outfits and shredded jocks
those things you're talking about CAN be used like that tho. kfc can be used for horror, for comedy, for tragedy for w/e, i don't think a fast food chicken place is tied to any "genre" (unless im missing something else here and kfc isn't the kfc fast food). doesn't robot chicken make fun of a lot of stuff? stars wars didn't make that episode themselves and shipped it. dbd is a specific horror game tho, it's one thing to take out the levity of horror and fright to a horror franchise, but it's another when it's a freaking dating simulator and especially when it came from the developers themselves. these are supposed to be killers that are fucked in the head, they're not scared or have any qualms of taking a life, but we're supposed to see them as "potential dating partners" now? because what? they want to appeal to the freaking horny community for some god forsaken reason?
For me, the artist is one of the scariest dbd characters (the scariest one is probably blight). I'm not talking about her face but her movement in the lobby and the sounds she makes really used to creep me out.
Glad to see someone else that appreciates Artist. Unlike the Skull Merchant, her design is an excellent example of making a creepy yet attractive Killer. I also think her design, backstory, and chase/menu music do a great job of conveying beauty and tragedy together.
I'd say she's the best of the honey bait of the recent editions. The way she walks, her height and weird body proportions help it alot. Though i did roll my eyes when she got revealed.
Yeah any of the "thirst trap" aspect of it is offset by her having stretched out unnatural proportions, cut off hands and her making constant weird crow throat sounds that make it obvious her tongue was cut out. She creeps me out and makes me uncomfortable, though I wish her gameplay was more interesting.
Something I think would have improved Trickster’s look and presence, would be that if the blood in his torso was his. That the Entity took him after the Korean police had shot him down, and left the bullet wounds there.
When I saw the blood marks on his chest for the first time I thought about it too: "ah, they must be bullet marks. maybe a singer who got involved with the mafia or something", but no, it was just horny bait
Or what if he took his victims bodies and took body parts and stitched it to his own to make himself look better like he was some sort of Frankenstein who was obsessed over the idea of perfection
Couldn’t agree more, me and the wife have been rolling our eyes constantly at all the honey baiting they’ve been releasing into the game for some time now.
I love tricksters design he’s based off of the trope of “celebrity is actually a psychopathic killer”. He has such a creepy vibe with the blood on him and the glowing yellow eyes make him feel so uncanny yes he’s not a scary monster, deformed killer, or masked murderer but that’s what makes him good and is what allows him to kill ,he’s a hot dude who can lure in victims with his charm but if you got on his bad side or his unlucky victim he chose you’re dead and no one would suspect it was him and his laughing when survivors get hurt or little humming and voice lines like I’m his mori add to it like he’s just toying with them like they’re his prey and is so creepy but when the survivors fight back and stun him he gets angry and his voice changes in that instant like he’s just snapped. Trickster is I think a well done hot or sexy killer
I remember when the trickster had this enormous community debate of what could or couldn’t be a killer. Now, today all changed when the horny nation attacked. With the skull merchant release, there wasn’t even a debate, the shows how the community has changed over the years.

I think the main issue with Trickster isn't that he's hot, but that he's a kpop idol. Just look at how kpop gets belittled by so many people. I always said that he's not scary in a Michael Myers type of way but his lore makes him unnerving. You wouldn't look at him and expect him to be a murderous maniac
@ ye honestly i didnt like trickster at first on like his feel i guess. but honestly he has grown on me. i still think his ability is one of the worst. balance wise. its both useless and overpowered. its so bad for actually winning the game. but feels like theres almost 0 counterplay except hope he's bad at aiming. similar to deathslinger. its just do gens before he kills you all. its not really a like. loop him. and hope you are good at looping, enough to win but stylistically + knowing his lore. its actually really unnerving is the best way to describe him. he's horror. just not like terrifying

@@DeputyFish yeah I like everything about him except for his power too. It made sense in his lore but it's so weird... Like you said, balance wise there's nothing really to do about it. Either give up or hope for the best. That's why I rarely use his power and just play M1 Trickster haha
People tend to point at Twins and laugh because they don't really appeal to anybody but I think that makes them kind of a gem in a game that only becomes more and more marketing and focus-tested with each passing update. Skull Merchant was a half-baked girlboss that they shoehorned anime into the lore of to justify the horniest skins possible whereas Twins represent a time where despite knowing that what they were creating didn't appeal to a lot of people, BHVR still made the decision to be adventurous with their gameplay and character design, even if it didn't really work out in the end and they couldn't sell a lot of skins.
Almost every killer in this game has a cool factor to it. They're either strong physically, is a literal monster, wears a cool mask, has a cool weapon, has a power you wouldn't mind having yourself or has cool voice lines now. Charlotte, in my opinion, has none of that.
Honestly I like that the Trickster looks so beautiful and human (in the meaning of not supernatural) because that makes his psychopathic, ruthless side even more evil. Of course the killer was made with k-pop fans and horny people in mind, but for him it makes sense. However, I completely agree that the latest killers have been way too much of a thirst trap. Also it adds to the skull merchant feeling like an empty shell that was just made for profit and to please uh. the certain crowd. Where is the originality and the passion? So yeah, I really want another scary killer in the near future
All killers have a good thing and a bad thing And you got the Trickster good thing completly right But we all are scared of something else Im scared of Dredge, Wesker, Huntress and Myers and someone else can be scared of Trickster, Skull Merchant and Knight But we all know that the most scaring thing in all dbd is... Jeff players with the white and black paints on the face, if you are in a indoor map and turning the corner is a Jeff with that skin running to you, you are gonna get a heart attack
I hate how the community desperately seeks to call it "thirst trap" because they know if they called it like it is, you know, being pathetic incel coomers masturbating to fictional videogame characters, they'd expose themselves as the pathetic sexless losers they are. You're not "thirsty" over fictional character designs, you're just an incel.
Agreed. I think the kind of cult-like behavior of kpop fans sometimes (I say this as a kpop fan) that was talked about in his tome adds to the freakiness. There is something terrifying about a celebrity who no matter how awful they are still has fans (just look at the guy who left BIGBANG bc he was involved in a sex trafficking ring. Look up the Burning Sun scandal. He still has fans).
I was writing a term paper on the bias of algorithms in Netflix and other streaming services and got stumped trying to explain something well. Checked RUclips to try and come back with a fresh mind, and in the first 4 minutes you helped me figure out how I was going to explain a certain point I was stuck on. Thank you
It’s very clear that BHVR was going for “The Purge” theme for Legion, hence the varying designs on their cosmetics ranging from cool to cute. And afrank being the poster boy makes me forgive Julie’s shyness ruining the vibes
biggest problem with giving gaming communities what they want is the simple saying "give an inch and they'll take a mile". Give them some horny skins, they'll demand a horny skin of everything. Give them some balance changes that would make the game more enjoyable, they'll review bomb your game until you change it back. it escalates more once they know their actions have power over the game. (like purposely killing themselves on hook to artificially raise kill rates to encourage nerfs)
Exactly what happened to the new changes, the meta was going to completely shift. That is until they un nerfed dead hard and reverted the healing times
Exactly what I am thinking. I miss the days where the game looked Rustic, the killers looked like actual killers and not like they went to a mall, got their suit and THEN got taken by the Entity. Same thing for the Survivors. This is why I love the original cast so much the Survivors look like they had a long stroll through the Woods and the Killers look just as dirty and Rustic. This is what intrigued me so much in 2016 when I first saw this game. It's quite sad what it has become now
Ah yes as we know trapper and his overalls, just a nurse outfit, a dude in blue work clothes, But yeah sure rustic I would actually like these people to have played old dbd because rustic? Rustic? Bro the game had infinites and some of the most wacky bs in the game in the beginning it was wayyyy less scary because of how much bs you could get up too
Knight and Wesker may not fit the theme or horror aspect of the game, but neither were particularly bad. Lore is solid on both, and while not specifically intimidating I'd say Knight could fit in a Dark Souls game, and those can at times be scary (Aldrich's Beasts for example). So while it is agreeable that they aren't peak DBD content, I wouldn't go as to say that they should be included with the shitshow that is some of the newer killers. They aren't the best, but they are far from the worst.
The only designs I can excuse from these last five killers are Knight and Wesker, I know Wesker isn't inherently scary but the whole Terminator vibe does the game justice in my opinion, even if he's relatively goofy even in Resi 5, as for Knight, I find his look to be disheveled enough to differentiate from similar designs in stuff like for honor, especially with the guards, Carnifex is honestly a pretty damn spooky design as well
I'mma be honest, I do see where your getting at and I feel what you are saying is true. Personally I don't find it a big problem (and no I do not care much about the thirst trap cosmetics). All I will say is that I like some of these things less for the serviceling they provide and more so for trying something different. As long as they continue to make scary killers with the occasional one not hitting the mark i' happy. But that's just some guy on the Internet's opinion.
Ya man, I gotta agree with you too. The same thing with fanservice in anime. I don't like it or dislike it. It's just what it is. But I see his points though.
I wonder how much media do people who just "don't care about fanservice" consume. Like, do you actually watch movies? tv shows? do you actually play games? read books? or do you just browse the internet and ocassionally watch tranime?
I kind of agree, but I feel like the Skull Merchant hit the hardest. The teaser definitely made pretty much everyone believe we were getting some type of terminator-like killer. An intimidating robot, android, etc. Instead we got an apex legends character. It’s not like Legion’s trailer where we were mislead about its power, because at least with them we had an idea of what the killer was going to look like. With this, all we got was a mechanical skull giving everyone impression that this was going to be some type of cyborg. This all wouldn’t be too bad if you know, we knew we had the possibility of getting another original mechanical killer. That likely will never happen though unless it’s licensed.
In the defense of Trickster and Wesker, they're supposed to not look scary or intimidating. They're supposed to look as "normal" as possible to deceive their victims. Trickster literally being some kind of "Homme" Fatal, who allure his fans to horribly torture them. I think the devs did good with his design a superficial attractive guy with a messed up mind reflected by his theme and constant creepy giggles while chasing you. Wesker is deceivingly normal as he is kind of a traitor, but also he fooling us into not realizing that he has godlike speed and strength and has gross mutation in the form of his parasite. Skull Merchant tho... She is shit... Nothing about her design makes sense, her walking is stupid, her nails feels like she stole those from plague and her mask is brain aneurysm worthy. Even her ultra rare cosmetic, one could argue it's inspired by dark 80's anime and manga who had oversexualized femme fatal. But 1 she is not into seduction from what her lore says and 2 she released alongside a shirtless outfit and a pretty revealing outfit for Thalita. You can tell what was the theme of this collection (being a thirst trap like Vittorio).
I don’t think wesker even needs a defense, like they didn’t make an intentional thirst trap, that’s just how he looks in RE itself lol It’s also what makes him stand out among the franchise villains visually, is that he just looks like a normal human when he’s anything but human strength wise
@@feedthemeat543f yeah just a dude with sunglasses and in black, but that's somehow "nerdy"? like what? what is he allergic to intelligence or something? that's not even part of his gameplay that's just his backstory, that's his thing in re
The problem with dbd Wesker is They didn't do anything to make him scary in Dead by daylight They rely on people to know him for the scare factor And he is very clearly an Alternate version of him While the actual game series Albert Wesker is not only one of the most beloved video game villains ever probably also one of the most terrifying Especially in a Wesker vs normal person Combat situation he is absolutely utterly terrifying due to his abilities Which you practically see none of in Dead by Daylight The fact they gave him a dumptruck ass in dbd when that's actually Chris Redfield's thing doesn't help either Btw. I can only deeply recommend the games They are some of the best horror games out there and generally super worth it! ^-^ Other than that I really agree with the video and you did awesome work!
I actually hate Skull merchant She lacks anything really going for her. You look at her design and have no idea what her lore is like. Trickster at least is a sort of a psychopathic horror with an actual design that reflects his lore. His voice actor did a great job of sounding creepy. Knight is kinda intimidating too. And as the Legion main, I love Legion. Yes, they are a bit lacking in the horror department, but they still have an idea behind them - that teenagers and kids grow up into monsters. I think this is what the trailer kinda was about - they are human, they just reject their humanity and decide to harm people. But that is just something I personally enjoy in their lore/character. Artist is okay too, coz she has this uncanny valley movements and sounds. Her croaks sound painful, but I agree that her design is lacking. I really wish they would bring back the scary stuff. Dredge was AMAZING. His design is just *chef's kiss*. I personally think that skins are okay, it's nice to have visual variety in your game (especially when you play hundreds and thousands of hours), but the hornification is honestly so sad. I wish people would stop confusing sexualisation and pondering with girlbossing and representation. I just want dbd to scare the shit out of me, man…
"Bedazzled gas mask" okay so shes rich thats one lore marker checked off "Claw and metalic hand" okay so shes got something to do with tech another checked off "Jumpsuit" while the biggest reach a jumpsuit with the other aspects does feel very comicy so another lore marker may be comics Trapper is a dude in overalls the biggest lore marker he has is his hooks in the back which wasnt part of his lore for ages
@Dunceinabag the mask looks like a kindergarten project. It doesn't look expensive. But okay, I'll take that point Metallic hand. Sure, the tech thing. And it suits with the jumpsuit But the jumpsuit and the arm clashes badly with the mask. They don't fit (I think the mask's design is overall poor tbh) She doesn't look like a manga villain. She looks like a mechanic with a weird mask. Her design reflects her liking for tech and... a bad taste in accessories But seriously, I understand your argument. Her design is not THE WORST, but I find it really lacking and uninspired. I also expected a lot more from the teaser and the concept. That is what makes it so much more disappointing. Concerning the Trapper, I'd say I am mostly okay with his design. He is one of the original killers and was meant to be a sorta parody, if I remember correctly. However, he became a symbol of the game and now is easily associated with it. But skullmerchant doesnt have this advantage and in the end they had too many plot points and failed to reflect most of them in the design
@@WSloth Legion is just a hoodie, myers is a work outfit People keep setting up their own expectations and cyberpunking themselves and then blaming the creators
@@Eyeupthebison Myers is a licensed killer. Legion are teenagers so they look like teenagers. I have nothing against those designs Funnily enough I never was disappointed in Cyberpunk. I overall don't have high standards for stuff. However the Skull Merchant did disappoint me and that is just how it is. Idk why you try defending the design. You are talking about high expectation, but this game is a product and its logical to expect a good product if you are planning on buying something. It's normal to have some sort of standard for something you are passionate about, isn't it?
Always appreciate your thoughts on these topics! For the most part I agree. I also think adding too many perks and killers into the game also dilutes the gameplay and makes it harder for newer players to join in. As you said BHVR isn't a small company anymore, they are VC backed adding more pressure onto the devs to think in terms of profit. It's a tough balance.
10:00 Imma be honest I don't really find artist really sexy to any degree, I kinda do think that's a more subjective thing, but Trickster you're 100% right about. Edit: 12:30 This is absolutely on the dot. I'm a massive weeb and heavily agree that a lot of really good stories have been completely outshined by just horny bait, and what's especially annoying about it is that some of the audience/writers seem to think that a sexual presentation with a good ass story can't coexist at the same time for some reason??? Edit^2: I'm glad you mentioned the part about "Just let people like things", as I always thought similar to what you said but just couldn't come up with a way to articulate it well, so thanks for that
killa whale coming in with a banger argument video as always. funny background images and gifs. overall very good. so good infact that my adhd brain managed to keep up through out the entire video. very good job
I agree so much. Thank god for the Singularity, he’s a killer design who fits in this game. While I love DbD and have been playing since launch, the new Texas Chainsaw Massacre game can’t come soon enough. I need a new asymmetrical multiplaher horror game fix that isn’t DbD.
I absolutely don't see how some people wouldn't find the Knight or the Artist scary. Intimidation is just fear is it not? Like how are you fine with Spirit but not the Artist? Why? Just because the Spirit is a little dismembered and is dead? Isn't the Artist also dismembered? Does she need to start wearing a mask for you to consider her as scary?
I didn't fully agree when I first saw this video but today we just got Shirtless Felix announced and I had to come back and say you have the most solid point
Dbd is definitely losing its edge and it’s sad to see. I remember when I first got the game I was introduced through the Stranger Things and Silent Hill chapters (the two best chapters imo). So to see the game degrade into this casual thirst game without real horror is discouraging. That said, the second Steve comes back with his shirtless skin I will be slamming my credit card into my pc.
Idk if there's any point on commenting on 10 months old video, but if you're still reading comments: as a new player, I had NO idea there was a DBD dating sim, up until I put like 400h in the game. At first, I was scared of everything, than I only got scarred by gens exploding, now sitting at 500h when I see the killer I think where should I loop him. And that's the current state of the game. Dbd is no longer game where as a surv you're scared shitless of the killer and you try to stealth him out, it's the game where you try to waste his time as much as you can by running him on loops, while your team does gens. That's the direction the game evolved to, and that's fine. I don't see no reason to double down on this with goofy ahh skins, like recent "Naughty Bear".
Dude I have to give you ALL of my props on this one, this video nailed it for me. I hope you make another one targeting the other things as well. You made several good points that I cannot disagree with one bit, this game however isn’t meant to be full on horror though, there is some competition to it.
Hum.. I understand your point, but I also disagree. I think you only see some horror categories, like the more visually noticable ones, but there is more to horror then just blood, open wounds and all kinds of liquids supurating. Horror can be a beautiful k-pop star with an represible murdurous need that you only notice when he already trickted you far from any possible help (androphibia & autophobia, to some extent). Or it can also a voluptious young woman with a taste for human skull and the need to turn them into some oppressive monitoring tools to find her next victims (scopophobia). Honestly, I don't find good looking killers less scary if they bring some kind of fear to the table, just like a cute little pink rabbit with void in his eyes and a knife in his back. And I personnaly think that it is a good thing that they search for more specific fears, otherwise the killers would look more and more similar with time, to the point where it wouldn't be every entertaining anymore. So ye, no, I do not agree with your opinion, as I already said, but still, thanks for sharing it with us. ^^
I agree with everything except artist being a part of the problem. I started playing the game right after artist released and at the time she was one of the scariest killers to me. Her sound design is insanely good and combined with the eerie way she moves and the seeping black ink everywhere and in place of missing body parts I think she fits in with the other female killers before that just fine. Other than that I really enjoyed the video and agree with your point.
I would like to add that fans aren't necessarily the biggest asset. In his book "How brands grow" Byron Sharp showed that most sales for FMCG brands come from occasional buyers. I don't know how it is for media, but I think we can safely assume that casual players outnumber the hardcore ones. Content creation by fans is often watched by other fans: I doubt people who don't know what DBD is in the first place are religiously watching Otzdarva: if you want to bring new players into the game - you need content creators whose audience are relatively unfamiliar with the game. I don't think "Gamer girl Suzie", "Kpop killer" and the AoT are for the community - at least not primarily. They are to reel in new players from other interests. Eros and Thanatos go hand in hand. (I haven't actually read Freud, but it makes sense in my head - so let me know if I'm wrong 😅) P.S. I require that David Skull Merchant Walk _* throws money at screen *_
I agree, and tried to touch on that sentiment when talking about financials and analytics; the problem (in my opinion) is when you cater so much to "casual" users, you have a lot less stable fanbase who might leave as soon as quickly as they come. Of course, if you just want to make as much money as fast as possible, that doesn't matter to you, so I get why most companies just do that instead. It's a tough balance for sure
@@KillaWhale you've touched on it on a previous video, too: the product owner answers to people above them, and they answer to people above them, and at the end of it all the person setting the targets might not even know about the intricacies of the business and whether such targets are even sustainable. Did you meet the targets this year? Here are even more ambitious targets for next year. You didn't meet them? You're underperforming - here's a budget cut. My former boss went on to work as product owner of the loyalty program of a large local state-affiliated bank - there's only so much you can do until you get bogged down in beurocracy and the whimsies of the "big boys" at the top. Nevertheless, unfortunately, 100 people buying 1 premium skin each is still more profitable than 1 hardcore fan buying 20 skins. On a brighter note, I've seen DBD content creators say that they're happy with how DBD pulled back on the PTB changes and said it's "a sign that they've started listening to the community". So, we'll see.
i dont feel like typing out a whole essay debate about this on a comment that nobody is gonna see but for the record i dont like this take and generally dont think its that deep. the gameplay is more important than the aesthetics and i feel like that should be more focused on than if a killer is somewhat attractive or not
You should probs play the RE games with Wesker in them before judging his perfect face😭 (Seriously he can dodge bullets and he's genuinely terrifying in RE)
I agree with some things here, especially with how Skull Merchant is just for the gooners, BUT: I feel like both Legion and Trickster seem so out of place because they tap into a different type of Horror. A down to earth, real life type of Horror. No supernatural abilities, just killers that could actually exist like that IRL. Legion is based on a real life tragedy/crime spree with 4 teenagers. And Trickster goes to show that no matter if someone is famous or good looking, they can still be a deprived sicko. Being good looking IS part of why he is scary to me, even if it feels less in your face. But yeah, fuck skull merchant, lmao. She is serving cvnt, but for what audience? 💀
Maybe its a hot take, but I think letting some female survivors be sexy is healthy and a great revenue source. Keyword there being SURVIVORS. Killers should always be scary first, second, and either cool or disgusting after that depending on the killer.
I started playing when the artist came out. Having her chase me through the halls of midwich was definitely horror. Her waddling as the music played whilst not being able to outrun her. Great stuff. The bass on the birds is also legit and shows her map presence. Legion is fine too. When I started I thought he was a survivor when running at me. So I think it does fit the Purge or even the movie Bully. Knight is good. I think alot would disagree with that as well. He does look like horror. I like how his outfit isnt ZOMBIE KNIGHT like his skin. His character design is actually perfect instead of looking like something out of the goonies. If it were up to me. I would have the survivors be the sexy ones and the killers be ugly(which I feel like they are mostly). In 80's - 2000's movies, that is always how it was. So seeing the majority of the survivors(exclude licenses) being average kind of takes me out of that campy horror.
i love that we've reached a point where trickster is so over the top that he's likable but skull merchant is just a bit over the top to the point where shes insanely lame
Legion is inspired by the The Purge movies. The horror of their design comes from the idea that they could be anywhere and anyone. That's meant to be obvious from their original trailer and their chapter's title. They're street thugs that went completely out of control and are absolutely insane. If you don't think they're fitting in horror you should definitely watch the Purge movies. Deathslinger is... eh. I don't dislike him but yeah he's kinda forgettable. In terms of pure visual design he kinda just seems like he's hitting all the same points as Wraith. But he has a hat and a gun and makes normal human sounds. Idk what you dislike about the Twins, they're super sick. If they kept everything about Trickster's design just made him European/American instead of Korean, people would freak out a lot less over his design. He's supposed to be reminiscent of the Joker but because they went with a K-pop motif, everyone thinks BHVR was just cashing in on a recent trend. His pretty face is SUPPOSED to contrast with all the other ugly killers. Especially since personality-wise he's definitely one of the more fucked up ones. Trickster is absolutely batshit insane but I think he would've been cooler if he was a mafioso instead of a popstar. Bird lady is fine to me. The way she sounds and moves her head like a bird is pretty creepy. When I see her I think of that one Junji Ito story with the harpy. Though I do agree if they made that other skin her default one she could've been cooler. Wesker... I kinda agree. Like, I LOVE Wesker as a character but he looks weird running around like that... And I'd say the same goes for Pinhead. Pinhead (as far as I remember) doesn't CHASE people in the (first two) movies. He kinda just... shows up and stands still with his posse. Seeing him """run""" behind survivors just looks silly. Knight is weird to me. On his own, I don't think he's very "horror" looking. But when I play against him game, (especially on his own map) he definitely elicits some sort of flight response in me. Most of it comes from the sound design I think. His chase theme and his footsteps are very "YOU NEED TO RUN" sounding. Maybe I still just have PTSD from Caelid in Elden Ring. That whole area still terrifies me and the Borgo and his chase theme look/sound like they were straight up ripped from that place. Skull Merchant... I have no excuses though. The closest I thought of on her lore release was that she's meant to be like a super rich Lex Luthor type character? Whatever. I hate her too. Boo.
The best killer designs usually tell a story. We can see the torture inflicted upon trapper, corrupting him. Wraith’s weapon is a trophy from his first (intentional) kill. Hag’s whole body reflects torture and starvation. Spirit is literally in pieces from when she was murdered, and her face snaps between hatred, pain, terror, and bloodthirst, the emotions she felt in her last moments. Dredge is… it reflects its story very well too. Meanwhile, the skull merchant is just a woman in a mask. The knight is literally just a knight. K-pop man is K-pop man. I’d say deathslinger is just a cowboy, but he does have a brutal signature weapon. Killers need a story-telling appearance to really be respected. It’s their only way of communicating WHY you should be afraid of them (except for whesker; I really wish he’d shut up).
i will say while deathslinger isnt as cool as the other proper killers, he is terrifying, literally does have a harpoon gun, and has atleast SOME otherworldly influence in him
The nurse is just the nurse, Wraith (before lore update) was just a dude with a club, legion is just a dude in a jumper, hell myers is just a dude in work clothes, etc etc etc Cherry picking the stuff you dont like and ignoring stuff you do is a bad faith argument Also trickster does tell a story? His body has blood wounds and his jacket is singed?
@@EyeupthebisonThe hell are you talking about? I said good killers tell a story. That’s why I didn’t mention nurse or legion. If you think Myers is just a man in a mask, YOU are arguing in bad faith. Also, wow blood on a killer! I guess you think every p3 skin is masterful storytelling? Twisting my words into some bizarre “new dbd bad” argument is stupid and “bad faith.” Learn how to read. Finally, I've been wanting the game to go back to its original themes for a bit now. I can take that the new killers aren't very scary but I ache for the maps to be like how they used to. Drowned in darkness and fog, random noises playing if you were alone. I'm glad I am not the only one who thinks this.
Skull merchant was a crazy eye opener for me. I knew bhvr was sexualizing their game for money for a long time now, especially when it came to survivors and that 'mysterious' unfixable bug where when you play spirit you get to sniff her ass at the beginning of a match; but seeing them willing to fully compromise a killer release chapter so shamelessly followed by that near naked skin she got was unforgivable. I'm heading into my 5th month of not playing the game and I've been playing since 2017 and it feels bad but damn, it ain't what it used to be that's for sure.
@@PRINCENARCISSIST I think there's bug where the camera is stuck at Spirit's ass at the start of the match. You know where the killer camera rotates around the killer before going into 1st person? instead of full body you get full ass
I will say I actually enjoy Skull Merchant’s gameplay a fair bit, but it’s a personal thing for me. I have some difficulties with vision at times, so I quite like being able to have the drones tell me where people are. Her design is a bit odd though.
i remember when the trickster was being leaked, my first thought was a killer who could've pretended to become a survivor (i didn't see anything about him yet) but i was very disappointed when i saw some korean man with knives
Personally I would rather they release more variety killers like they do now instead of "Big dude/Masked/Ghostly" killers all the time. I don't think smtg has to look scary to fit in the game. Sometimes ur mom is scarier than big dudes. If trickster were to be replaced by death metal band, it would certainly be "scarier" but so much less interesting cause it's already associated to scary things. You never relate kpop to murders, but now he is. Isnt that more interesting? He's also the first killer I actually wanted to read the lore about cause he's just different to the others. Dbd is a game that keep adding new characters so variety is going to happen, and taking steps to appeal to different audiences is a good thing!
I love the narrative arc of this video, and totally agree they are focusing on what is thirsty rather than what is good. Hopefully they can do better in the future, and you keep up the awesome videos!
Bro thank you for talking about Wesker, I'm a huge RE fan but when I saw Wesker I was like "bro he is not even scary why is he here!" I love Wesker's character but he is not scary at all and I complained this with some friends and they just told "Nah I think he is a great fit for the game" And I was like no he is not scary there is manyyy RE characters that are way scarier and seeing Wesker I was like I wasn't sure about that option, now that he is in the game I think it's fine because I think he is a cool killer but not scary at all.
5:09 Killa. Don't forget it's becoming more and more known that it's possible to pay for, or even automize with bots, "people" who write text you want them to write and post it on social media. This is very common on certain podcasts I know of and possibly on twitter
I gotta agree and disagree with you about Wesker. Sure, looking at him he doesn't seem all that scary... but then the second he sprints at you and does that dash attack, you realize half the map's loops are no longer safe and someone's pouring warm water down your pantleg. Also his chase theme is god-tier.
I think this video helped me figure out why I haven’t returned to dbd yet, I’ve gotten burned out before but usually after a month or 2 I’d be recharged enough to play it again. I still haven’t come back after several months and I think it is because of the slow shift of design choices, the gameplay loop has always been the same, but where it used to feel like a deadly game of cat and mouse, it’s now a bunch of shirtless supermodels playing tag in a well lit area, hard for me to be motivated by that
There's an old saying that goes, "The voice of the people is the voice of God," and whoever came up with that saying clearly thinks God is some crazy psychopath with bipolar disorder, same goes to BHVR and the community
Rembember when back in 2016-17 the game was actually scary ? I miss the days I was genuinelly scared to face old Freddy and started pannicing when I heard the lullaby or hearing a cjainsaw or a scream across the map made me jump to the nearest locker. Maybe it's becouse I was younger or just the nostalgia but it feels like I'm not playing the same game I started playing back in 2017.
You raise good points. The game does have a noticeable shift in direction, wherein blatant sexualization of male and female characters has been prioritized. However, a lot of the examples provided aren’t viewed in the same way from a pure consumer stand point as compared to an artist. As an artist myself, I think a lot of the art direction in modern Dead by Daylight is misconstrued as “neglecting REAL FANS for HORNY”. First and foremost, Behavior is very open about the representation that they want to include. Not all of it may appeal to you but you cannot say that you see this all the time. In so many online popular games, there’s a “Feng Min”- a popular petite young Asian woman that is fetishized to the point that she exists as a caricature, devoid of any personality. Characters like The Artist, The Skull Merchant, or Vittorio aren’t conventionally attractive. They certainly are attractive but these designs would not be seen anywhere else, or if they are, not in the same way. Vittorio gets criticized often, but the truth is that a lot of the “male sexualization” you often see is simply meant to empower males, instead of simply being appealing/empowering to women, gay men, or other queer people. In the specific case of The Skull Merchant, I have seen a handful of DbD fan artists claim that a “lesbian created her” jokingly, because her attractive design traits are appreciated more by women than any straight men, of which have vocally criticized her design in places like Twitter. This may still be perceived as “problematic” because this game is “not scary anymore” but that’s where longevity comes in. Dead by Daylight is NOT a finished product. If it launched with every killer before Trickster and then never added more content, that would be different. But because this is a live service game, you need sufficient content to keep this game sustainable and to give it longevity, and that content needs to be diverse enough. For the people that think trafficking innocents is true masculinity, diversity may sound like a scary word but in this context it just refers to variety of designs. You can only do so many disfigured humans or masked murderers before you start recycling what you have already created or you make people think that you’re copying existing copyrighted content that you do not have the rights to. So many fans still believe that the Skull Merchant is a copy of The Predator. That’s so much pressure on creating original content and it’s a lot for any art directors or BHVR’s creative team. I hope to provide perspective with this. It’s still very true that the business side of BHVR stands to benefit from these art directions as it helps them fund their twentieth yacht. But there’s way more going on with any art decisions in a game. And if you do not understand anything I’ve said, I hope they add pronouns to DbD just to spite you lmao
Re-reading my comment, it has some parts that sound too aggressive but that’s not targeted towards you directly Mr. Whale. It’s meant more to be vaguely targeted towards any individual that hides their hate under “criticism”. I apologize for not correcting it before I sent it. I love your content and I would never hate you unless you said survivor players deserve our sympathy .
My thoughts on Skull Merchant's design has always been that I don't mind them using a bodyshape and such like that for her but they should have leaned in way more into the body-horror aspect of cyborgs. It would make her design so much more interesting in terms of her story aswell. Being so into becoming this comic-inspired villain that she'd mutilate/"enhance" herself to that point. And then having cosmetic skins where she covers that up with like a suit or something for when she poses as a simple businesswoman. It would have worked so well!
Number one rule of fandom: if they tell you they don’t like something or there’s something missing, listen. Once they start giving you advice on what to change or add, stop listening.
Funny thing is that I got back into dbd after not playing for nearly a year until Trickster was announced, during the time I really loved Kpop and seeing a Kpop idol whos also a psychopath made me really excited and now I play dbd more than ever. Clearly I got back in the game because he appealed to me as a female audience and tbh im glad I got back into dbd it can be fun most of the time :)
While I do see where your coming from, i honestly don't mind some non horror elements of the game since its honestly really fun especially the ace hat, that cosmetic is so goofy that I honestly love it
The recent poll they've made, there was literally questions about girls skins and if we found them attractive. I explained point by point why I'm only attracted to Knight.
Killa whale!! I miss your content so much I get so happy whenever you I see your vids! keep it up! on that note I have to agree my first thought when I saw the new chapter I was " they are trying to please the horny crowd" I'm glad I'm not the only one that thought about it. I really hope the next chapter is different but who knows ): was nice seeing you post again you are so underrated you deserve more attention have a wonderful day or goodnight!
When it comes to lighting, I’m fine with that. Simply because I can see what the hell I’m doing. Seriously, in the past, it was so hard to see what was going on, even with the brightness up on the game. I would gladly sacrifice some ambiance if it means people can see what there doing in a game.

Not too sure about the knight there honestly. He has a cool design but gameplay is just boring.
Scariest killer period, only one close would be alien or myres
I agree on most things, except the Knight not being scary.
He's more intimidating than creepy, but I do think he fits reasonably well.
Im surprised to learn that people like the new chapter. All I saw were disappointed reaction on twitter.
Practically nobody likes the new chapter. Its just that all the twitter activists were loud. Like I have not seen the new killer even once since release and her trailer/reveal is the most disliked BHVR video

I was actually timing the Rule 34 upload for first Skull Merchant art. I believe it was 10 hours.
He didn't say metal is evil. He said it looked more scary compared to K-pop, which i think almost everyone agrees with. I
ur gey ? 😮 😨
Idk, I think there's room for both. Silly fun skins are neat, and help your characters stand out when you play the same game for 10k plus hours or whatever
But I also think the darker more chilling atmosphere of the game is gone.
Exactly!!! I don't know what this guy is on about
those things you're talking about CAN be used like that tho. kfc can be used for horror, for comedy, for tragedy for w/e, i don't think a fast food chicken place is tied to any "genre" (unless im missing something else here and kfc isn't the kfc fast food). doesn't robot chicken make fun of a lot of stuff? stars wars didn't make that episode themselves and shipped it. dbd is a specific horror game tho, it's one thing to take out the levity of horror and fright to a horror franchise, but it's another when it's a freaking dating simulator and especially when it came from the developers themselves. these are supposed to be killers that are fucked in the head, they're not scared or have any qualms of taking a life, but we're supposed to see them as "potential dating partners" now? because what? they want to appeal to the freaking horny community for some god forsaken reason?
For me, the artist is one of the scariest dbd characters (the scariest one is probably blight). I'm not talking about her face but her movement in the lobby and the sounds she makes really used to creep me out.
Glad to see someone else that appreciates Artist. Unlike the Skull Merchant, her design is an excellent example of making a creepy yet attractive Killer. I also think her design, backstory, and chase/menu music do a great job of conveying beauty and tragedy together.
I'd say she's the best of the honey bait of the recent editions.
The way she walks, her height and weird body proportions help it alot.
Though i did roll my eyes when she got revealed.
you the giant ass that keeps bouncing on my screen whenever she's carrying me
Yeah any of the "thirst trap" aspect of it is offset by her having stretched out unnatural proportions, cut off hands and her making constant weird crow throat sounds that make it obvious her tongue was cut out.

You wouldn't look at him and expect him to be a murderous maniac
uh was there? i remember there being alot of backlash for her. and him
@ ye honestly i didnt like trickster at first on like his feel i guess.
but honestly he has grown on me. i still think his ability is one of the worst. balance wise. its both useless and overpowered. its so bad for actually winning the game. but feels like theres almost 0 counterplay except hope he's bad at aiming. similar to deathslinger. its just do gens before he kills you all. its not really a like. loop him. and hope you are good at looping, enough to win
but stylistically + knowing his lore. its actually really unnerving is the best way to describe him. he's horror. just not like terrifying

I would play twins if they had a more gnarly skin but they kinda just don’t. Hopefully they get a good blighted skin then maybe.
And nobody plays Twins but SM has a bunch of stans.

And you got the Trickster good thing completly right

I hate how the community desperately seeks to call it "thirst trap" because they know if they called it like it is, you know, being pathetic incel coomers masturbating to fictional videogame characters, they'd expose themselves as the pathetic sexless losers they are. You're not "thirsty" over fictional character designs, you're just an incel.
I think Trickstar fits as well. But yeah everything else sucks.
He still has fans).

biggest problem with giving gaming communities what they want is the simple saying "give an inch and they'll take a mile".

I agree with this, hopefully I didn't come off too harsh on them
The only designs I can excuse from these last five killers are Knight and Wesker, I know Wesker isn't inherently scary but the whole Terminator vibe does the game justice in my opinion, even if he's relatively goofy even in Resi 5, as for Knight, I find his look to be disheveled enough to differentiate from similar designs in stuff like for honor, especially with the guards, Carnifex is honestly a pretty damn spooky design as well
I'mma be honest, I do see where your getting at and I feel what you are saying is true. Personally I don't find it a big problem (and no I do not care much about the thirst trap cosmetics).
Thanks for uploading I missed you
In the defense of Trickster and Wesker, they're supposed to not look scary or intimidating.
Holy crap, Somebody actually understands Trickster's Whole "Implicit horror" deal, that's a miracle!
I don’t think wesker even needs a defense, like they didn’t make an intentional thirst trap, that’s just how he looks in RE itself lol
It’s also what makes him stand out among the franchise villains visually, is that he just looks like a normal human when he’s anything but human strength wise
Thank you for defending the homie Wesker, I salute you
@@feedthemeat543f yeah just a dude with sunglasses and in black, but that's somehow "nerdy"? like what? what is he allergic to intelligence or something? that's not even part of his gameplay that's just his backstory, that's his thing in re
The problem with dbd Wesker is
They didn't do anything to make him scary in Dead by daylight
They rely on people to know him for the scare factor
And he is very clearly an Alternate version of him
While the actual game series Albert Wesker is not only one of the most beloved video game villains ever probably also one of the most terrifying
Especially in a Wesker vs normal person Combat situation he is absolutely utterly terrifying due to his abilities
Which you practically see none of in Dead by Daylight
The fact they gave him a dumptruck ass in dbd when that's actually Chris Redfield's thing doesn't help either
Btw. I can only deeply recommend the games
They are some of the best horror games out there and generally super worth it! ^-^
Other than that I really agree with the video and you did awesome work!
I actually hate Skull merchant
She lacks anything really going for her.
I just want dbd to scare the shit out of me, man…
"Bedazzled gas mask" okay so shes rich thats one lore marker checked off
"Claw and metalic hand" okay so shes got something to do with tech another checked off
"Jumpsuit" while the biggest reach a jumpsuit with the other aspects does feel very comicy so another lore marker may be comics
Trapper is a dude in overalls the biggest lore marker he has is his hooks in the back which wasnt part of his lore for ages
@Dunceinabag the mask looks like a kindergarten project. It doesn't look expensive. But okay, I'll take that point
Metallic hand. Sure, the tech thing. And it suits with the jumpsuit
But the jumpsuit and the arm clashes badly with the mask. They don't fit (I think the mask's design is overall poor tbh)
She doesn't look like a manga villain. She looks like a mechanic with a weird mask. Her design reflects her liking for tech and... a bad taste in accessories
But seriously, I understand your argument.
@@WSloth Legion is just a hoodie, myers is a work outfit
People keep setting up their own expectations and cyberpunking themselves and then blaming the creators
@@Eyeupthebison Myers is a licensed killer.
Legion are teenagers so they look like teenagers. I have nothing against those designs
Funnily enough I never was disappointed in Cyberpunk.
Edit^2: I'm glad you mentioned the part about "Just let people like things", as I always thought similar to what you said but just couldn't come up with a way to articulate it well, so thanks for that
Yeah it's really subjective cuz i'd let the artist mori me any day
And The oni is the real thing for weeb audience
@@Sleepyhollow3245Artist is hot!
killa whale coming in with a banger argument video as always. funny background images and gifs. overall very good. so good infact that my adhd brain managed to keep up through out the entire video. very good job
Never seen this channel before. Glad it got recommended to me. You earned my sub.
Thank you! I have been saying since he was revealed that Trickster did not fit into DbD's artstyle. He began the downfall of DbD's entire artstyle.
I didn't fully agree when I first saw this video but today we just got Shirtless Felix announced and I had to come back and say you have the most solid point
I needed this 🥺
Dbd is definitely losing its edge and it’s sad to see.
I seem to recall coming back to this banger vid, you hit it spot on!
15:54 well to be fair there is a cutscene in the resident evil 3 remake where one of the enemies puts its “appendage” down Jill’s throat.
Same thing I was thinking but I just did not care to much about. And this man killawhale has some balls to put R34 pictures in his videos 😂😂😂
Great video. Everything you said is so true and I also hope that bhvr improves on the things you pointed out.
Mr. Whale we need an updated video of this for 2024 now that Sable and her bikini are in the game.
(I haven't actually read Freud, but it makes sense in my head - so let me know if I'm wrong 😅)
So, we'll see.
i dont feel like typing out a whole essay debate about this on a comment that nobody is gonna see but for the record i dont like this take and generally dont think its that deep. the gameplay is more important than the aesthetics and i feel like that should be more focused on than if a killer is somewhat attractive or not
You should probs play the RE games with Wesker in them before judging his perfect face😭
(Seriously he can dodge bullets and he's genuinely terrifying in RE)
Totally feel u bro i think Nemessis is not effective enough i think if we give him a Rocket Launcher and more zombies this will solve the problem
I agree with some things here, especially with how Skull Merchant is just for the gooners, BUT:
I feel like both Legion and Trickster seem so out of place because they tap into a different type of Horror.
Man apparently never seen the thirst around Leon Kennedy
Your first mistake was listening to Twitter
A new Killa Whale upload, you know its gonna be a good week!
Artist is hot af wdym?
Dad's here and he got the milk
i love that we've reached a point where trickster is so over the top that he's likable but skull merchant is just a bit over the top to the point where shes insanely lame
I love the knight’s design (especially music) so much, but I just can’t get myself to play him because of how garbage his power is.
Boo.
The 8 bit remix of house of fun really caught me off guard good taste my man!
It’s their only way of communicating WHY you should be afraid of them (except for whesker; I really wish he’d shut up).
i will say while deathslinger isnt as cool as the other proper killers, he is terrifying, literally does have a harpoon gun, and has atleast SOME otherworldly influence in him
The nurse is just the nurse, Wraith (before lore update) was just a dude with a club, legion is just a dude in a jumper, hell myers is just a dude in work clothes, etc etc etc
Cherry picking the stuff you dont like and ignoring stuff you do is a bad faith argument
Also trickster does tell a story? His body has blood wounds and his jacket is singed?
@@EyeupthebisonThe hell are you talking about? I said good killers tell a story. That’s why I didn’t mention nurse or legion. If you think Myers is just a man in a mask, YOU are arguing in bad faith. Also, wow blood on a killer! I guess you think every p3 skin is masterful storytelling?

Thanks for leaving! Need less conspiracy theorist!
You get to WHAT?
@@PRINCENARCISSIST I think there's bug where the camera is stuck at Spirit's ass at the start of the match. You know where the killer camera rotates around the killer before going into 1st person? instead of full body you get full ass
I will say I actually enjoy Skull Merchant’s gameplay a fair bit, but it’s a personal thing for me. I have some difficulties with vision at times, so I quite like being able to have the drones tell me where people are. Her design is a bit odd though.
Happy to see your vids in my feed again.
i remember when the trickster was being leaked, my first thought was a killer who could've pretended to become a survivor (i didn't see anything about him yet) but i was very disappointed when i saw some korean man with knives
EXACTLY UNIQUE OVER BASIC
Whats the point of having a big cast if you don't experiment
I hope they dont make the same mistake with Meet Your Maker because I love how the game looks
What game?
I died (no pun intended) when you put the chase music on the dead or alive extreme video.
You talk about the problems from the design side but there are not only problems there, these new killers are uninteresting to play as and against.
I love the narrative arc of this video, and totally agree they are focusing on what is thirsty rather than what is good. Hopefully they can do better in the future, and you keep up the awesome videos!
great video
I like that dopey house of fun remix playing in this video. Also, President Kamacho as a killer.
I've been watching more and more of your videos and how can you consistently be spittin hot takes that aren't absolute garbage every time?
When Doctor Showed Up Like This. Shows a picture of a handsome doctor. LMAO! That got me laughing.
Behavior needs to stop appealing to the horni
Another banger of a video mr Whale, cant wait to see what you gonna upload next in 3 months
I didn't know where this was gonna go. I'm glad I stuck around lol.
While I do see where your coming from, i honestly don't mind some non horror elements of the game since its honestly really fun especially the ace hat, that cosmetic is so goofy that I honestly love it
I just want to say with the singularity Behanviour bounced back from this with an unnerving android and the most graphic Mori in the game.
I would gladly sacrifice some ambiance if it means people can see what there doing in a game.
just had to acknowledge the OST used at 10 min
