- So you want to build your comic collection? Comics isn't a cheap hobby, and whether you've just started collecting, already got a few books on your shelf, or been collecting for years, there's always more books to get. However, it doesn't have to be so expensive, so I compiled a list of the 13 tips I wished I'd known when I started getting into comics and building a collection.
Hopefully this list helps you, and who knows, you might have a few tips to help others too!

Great tips! Alert prices can lead to really good deals. And I think all of us tend to forget that our collections should be for ourselves first and foremost. It's about keeping the books you love and will re-read, not the ones that other collectioners want.
I'd add:
- Use some websites that compare prices online, particularly if you're an international reader. These websites tend to include shipping costs in their comparisons, which is very useful.
- If you don't feel excited about receiving books anymore, maybe go a few weeks without buying or/and question what you've been buying!

As someone who really just started getting into comics and graphic novels heavy in the past couple years, I've found your various videos regarding the early journey into this hobby quite helpful. My collection of collected editions is coming up on 100 any day now (I might be there already, I haven't counted in a few weeks) and single issues is probably around 50. I don't have a local comic shop so single issues aren't really my thing, but there are a few ongoing runs I'm trying to keep up with by traveling about 90 minutes to the nearest comic shop every so often. I have recently read and completed my collections of a couple small runs of TPBs (Black Widow by Kelly Thompson, Batman New 52 by Scott Snyder, Daredevil by Chip Zdarsky, Captain America by Ta-Nehisi Coates, Daredevil by Frank Miller, as well as the entirety of The Walking Dead) after falling victim to the volume 1 debacle you spoke of for a little bit. I started to read through Nick Spencer's Amazing Spider-Man run, but I haven't been able to find the TPB of volume 4 Hunted for less than like $95 unfortunately. I do find it somewhat helpful to buy a few volume 1s sometimes and see what grabs me, and then move on from there, but one does have to be careful not to fall into the habit of only buying the first volume of any title. Anyway, I really appreciate your passion for this and all the great advice. Thanks and keep up the good work.
Don’t forget you can do a subscription service through most shops and have them sent to you instead of living close by I’ve bought books from a big New York shop plenty of times and I’m in wa state
Definitely guilty of number 10. I do need to focus on buying only a few lines rather then a lot like i currently do. I only have a limited budget every month so i need to make what i buy worth it. Its hard on a budget but i think i have done alright these last few years.
When I buy a book I tend to have never read it before but if it is a writer i like i buy pretty much everything. I have recently made it my goal in getting more into the indie comic stories rather than the big 2.

Great tips as well,most of them we had to learn by ourselves, usually"paying" for them..its nice to share some of that hard gained knowledge)))
I have many rules myself,most are like yours but i think the most important for me may be never pay over cover ;) of course i have 1-2 VERY SPECIFIC exceptions but for the rest,i stand my ground😋

However, you will be pleased to know that I took your suggestion, and Absolute Daytripper is on it's way from Amazon USA! Please don't recommend anything else until I get paid, or my books will have to to be used to pay the bills haha! The only one I can think of without looking at my shelves is Cap by Brubaker Vol 1, and this was like before the first Cap movie haha! Showing my age now, but there's probably others and I'll point them out in the video :)
Yeah man, you influenced my decision and whether good or bad, the peer pressure got to me haha! Amazon don't seem to have tax for some reason, and there's a decent 3 for 2 offer at the moment which is why I got it :) I bet you can't guess the other two books I ordered haha!

I wish I did, that book will have to be found in the wild now, if I can find it for under cover :/ but, I've got the 4 HC's so I don't feel as disappointed in not having it, and there's always the chance for a reprint :)
That's a shame though, for the UK there doesn't seem to be any customs charges, but stuff in eBay's global shipping program works out best :)

I’ve pretty much structured my collecting to both historical and my favorite characters, and I keep it in a certain time. The late silver age early Bronze Age.70-80s I want a history of comics as well as a collection so some big events and a little golden age of your favorite hero’s for later in life you might not enjoy them now but it’s a portal to another time in comics when your older and wiser

Have been into comics during school days and missed out the time when omnibuses came into existence. I finally returned back into the comics life and after Gem Mint Collectibles and Near Mint Condition channels, I found this video in the "Recommended" section of RUclips.
Being a long term Spider-Man fan, it's real pain to get omnibuses in India. Luckily I managed to get a couple of them and a couple of Ultimate Spider-Man Ultimate Collection trade paperbacks. Honestly, I kind of jumped into the bandwagomnibus (see what I did there? lol), but stumbled upon this video.
Thanks for pinpointing out that one should be proud of his/her collection, be it 2 comics or 2000 comics.

After tip 5 i was going to type, to don't buy books just because there hyped atm. But then you mentioned it right after :D
I think its very important to note, that this hobby is very addicting, especcialy at the beginning. I've made a few mistakes myself and blind bought omnis/books that at i didn't even enjoyed.
Perfect example is currently the SS Omni. It's a interesting book, but it it's silver age and silver age is not for everyone.

I advise setting Ebay alerts for any books you want but are overpriced, bargains pop up now and again - for example I wanted Deadly Class Deluxe volume 1 but as it is oop the price has shot up to over £100 but I recently got it brand new and sealed for £30 through Ebay alerts.
That's a very good shout too, although recently it hurt me because I learned one of my biggest whales was listed for cover price but I just wasn't quick enough :( Thanks for watching the video William!
How do you keep the books in good condition dust free, clean, looking after the spin?
I dust them when I notice a problem :) but the shelves often keep the majority of the dust away :) thanks for watching the video mate!

My only problem is that paperbacks and hardcovers mix up in my collection because I have no choice because of availability online. Especially when I'm collecting a series like Hickman's Avengers and it looks weird on the shelf because of the height difference

Great idea for a video. Some real wisdom in here. I wish I'd have had something like this when starting out... although admittedly I would probably have ignored a lot of the advice because I'm an idiot :P
Along with using Amazon's pre-order price guarantee to your advantage, I would also add using their awesome return policy to your advantage! I know they don't pack their books well and you quite often have them turn up with some form of damage... which is why I always send them back for a replacement until I get one that they can get to me in an acceptable condition! I do find it massively inconvenient to have to return so many books but it's better than living with something that you've paid a lot for but will always make you sad to look at on your shelf because you know it's damaged.
I bought the Astonishing X-Men omnibus from Amazon back in the day before it ever became a whale. It came a bit beat up, but I think I only paid something ridiculous like £25 for it so I didn't want to make a fuss about it. I never realised what a nice book that would be to own (and what a whale it would become) if only it were in good condition. Once it became a whale I was gutted that my copy was messed up because I thought I'd be stuck with it forever in its sorry looking condition - no way I'd ever be able to justify spending the money to replace it. I always wished that back when I bought it, I had just asked Amazon for a replacement. It would have been so easy, and very much worth it in the long run.
Thankfully they announced the reprint and I jumped at the chance to sell mine (for a non-whale price, reflective of its condition) and upgrade to a nice fresh undamaged copy.
Same here, I'm trying to be the channel and make the videos that I wish existed when I started collecting, but don't feel bad, most of these tips are because I didn't do them the first time around haha!
That's a good point, so it's always win-win with pre-ordering. Not sure about you, but I get nervous lately with stuff like JMS AMS Vol 2, because if it arrived damaged it looked like there was no replacements haha!
Ahh, that's a shame, that's a book that deserves to be in a great condition, at least you got it now though, but that story is very reminiscent to my Brubaker Cap Vol 1... hoping for a reprint!
