i wish the olympics would have full contact tournaments like these in every martial arts, not just some bullshit ass point system, i feel disappointed as a person who practices taekwondo, thats one of the reasons i aint devoted to train anymore honestly

Why not using punch when the opponent is very near. Why they prefer to kick while punch is very effective for near distance.

It's a different sport and your observation pretty much explains why Joe Rogan got punched a lot in the face when he sparred kickboxers just using Olympic TKD.

We moved as a teen from my hometown in Louisiana to Detroit MI. I took Taekwondo there, even though my background was strictly American Karate. In Karate, we sparred hard, and while discouraged, we werent penelized if we accidently punched to the face. It taught you to keep your hands up. So when I started TKD, I didn't know your primary purpose was body shots with kicks when sparing. Actually ended up upseting a TKD black belt when I punched him. It just baffled me how he kept his hands down and wouldnt get close. I really did love taking TKD though. It was a blast and looked very impressive! I just wish that the school I went too had sparred under a little different ruleset. Crazy part was, they taught us punches, knees and elbows in that TKD class! Just didnt spar very hard

Of this style of full contact in a dobok or gi, kyokushinkai karate is far superior. Thats from me an ITF tkd proponent no longer training but 80s and 90s i did 17 years of it. You can't compete without hands, it makes no sense whatsoever and leads to bad muscle memory movement in real fights.
