      PS- We are specifically looking in Cochise and yavapai. Mostly as a ‘vacation’ property, but also a backup place to move to with this weird world we are living in. Just want to have an option. Although it would be very hard to leave all the things we’ve built here😅

Funny since I bought my 3 60 gallon rain barrels it hasn’t been enough rain to fill 20 gallons of one of them. It’s the dry season 🤷🏻‍♂️. But I’m ready. I follow your channel, not because it's entertaining, but because it's educational, inspirational, existential in nature, and yes, fun to watch. St. Paul says: "The soul is willing, the but flesh is weak." Translated: One made be motivated to do something - for whatever reason, but it's the discipline that gets it done. The discipline being the weak part. I watch your videos, I get inspired. I don't have much money/resources, but, for me, I have a need for water - I don't have a well like my neighbors do. So, all improvements I do to the house pretty much lead to, one day, having a humongous tank to store rainwater. I'm certainly tempted to spend my money on other things, but I made water harvesting the top priority. It's central to my living well (no pun intended) - better than I do now. Thanks for the videos.

    You could record the entire rain from your front porch and people would watch it. It is fun to sit on a porch during a rain storm and just relax and watch what happens. I go on youtube and use "falling rain" for 10 hours and fall to sleep at night with it on low. If I wake up and forget what time I went to bed I can look and see it played for 4.5 hours and then decide to get up or lay back down. I have COPD and your area would be too hot for me to breathe. Plus, being city life in Ohio, I wouldn't want all those snakes and creatures outside my window!

      We just entered the summer monsoon season now so it will be 2-4 months to see if this is a dry or wet year.
      Did you see the earth bag cistern that Green Dream projects built? A almost 15,000 gallon (56,781 liter) cistern for the cost of a 1,500 gallon (5,678 liter) poly tank. It never hurts to have more storage then you need in a year or two as you never know when you will enter a drought and need that extra water saved or even just to use it for things like gardening or even fire control. How many fire trucks could you help to fill off say 50,000 liters that isn't critical for you for daily life?

      We have a 4,000 gal black poly tank & our awning over our deck is 480 sq ft which is our catchment, we get 264 gals of water for every 1” of rain. We filled our tank in 3 days with our Hawaiian rain showers. Our area only has rain catchment as our water source. Don’t forget about filtering systems, UV light to kill pathogens & bacteria. We also used an IBC tote & transfer pump prior to our water catchment roof & tank. We are from So Cal so we were raised in a constant drought status so we are conservative on our usage. The 4,000 gal tank lasts us 10 months.

      @@TheUserid82 will have to check it out, underground cisterns are not that common over here but I have seen more recently! We now have 3 large dams on our property for gardens and fire fighting water, about 500,000L of water all up which came in handy when we were impacted by fires in 2019, had water for the helicopters and trucks going our pretty constantly!

    I was just thinking about your tunnel vision comment. I live in Ohio and started growing my own food and was thinking about the best way to store my harvest. Canning and freezing are the ones people most often go to, but they both have their merits, so I'm doing both.

    Nice job, if you need more water perhaps add a trailer and allow the upper (pickup) tank to fill lower trailer tank? Nice pile of angle iron out back.

    Thank you! I love your rainwater collection series. I have watched them many times. I am intrested in your filter system. What kind of filtration do you use? Do you structure your water from the tank to the house? Structure is a left hand spin to the water. Imploding motion. Wow the storm at the end! Thanks again!💙🌎✌

    We finally got our house hooked up to our rain catchment system. With our garage tanks we're now up to 10K capacity. We'll be adding more tanks when our equipment shed is completed. During extended dry spells we haul water from a spring. Rain is a good thing

    In my opinion the best thing to do is to separate your water systems in your house if you haven’t already and have a separate water collection system for flushing the toilet/washing clothes/watering garden. Dig a large funnel shaped depression somewhere on your property, line it with polythene or similar with a sump at the centre, cover completely with river stones to keep the polythene from being sun damaged or blowing away. Then pump the water from the sump to a tank, the tank can be very simple, dirt floor with braced plywood sides lined with polythene or similar, some baffles in the tank to catch sediment/sand/dust. The toilet and washing machine account for about 40% of water usage in the home depending on where you get your data and if you make the system large enough you can use the tank for a swimming pool if you want to, just need to be careful with the pool chemicals and the washing machine and septic tank. Very simple low cost solution.

    Beginning my rain harvesting journey. I live in Phoenix in an HOA. I’ve been searching your videos to see if you’ve ever shown how to install a solar pump to use with drip irrigation along with a water harvesting system. Maybe you have and I just can’t find the link.
    Looking into purchasing some books. Any helpful resources or links would be appreciated.

      That was actually my original preference when we built our house. But we went through a bank to finance it just wasn’t ‘familiar’ enough for them to approve the funding without us having to significantly restructure our constructkn loan. But if I build again, I will cash fund a garage/shop first, to live in, then build 100% debt free😀👍

      Make a larger copy of the Green Dream Projects earth bag cistern to catch all the rain to save it for dry years. Why build for 15,000 gallons when you can easily go for 50,000 and thanks to things like a direct drive solar pump you can easily move that water from the below ground cistern to an above ground tank for gravity feed when needed.

    • @homesteadonomics
      @homesteadonomics  3 года назад

      Yes, we are trying to decide what route we would like to go. Part of me would like to build one like GDP..... but also part of me wonders about this crazy world and if I had to move, having a poly tank would be able to be moved to a new site. This is not something we are planning for specifically but it is something that is in the back of my mind. Developing another property to be able to vacation to and/or move to in the event that weird politicians get even weirder...
