I think it's so strange how people seem to wake up one day and do something so completely out of the norm for themselves. Then, if they are found alive they don't remember anything. I wonder why these cases haven't been researched more intensely by anyone in the psychology field. There has to be a reason why this continues to happen to people.

Many years ago my very close friend and I hiked and camped on this very same area on the same creek. This was years before this young lady had gone missing. As we hiked in we kind of marveled at the fact there was ZERO wildlife. In the dense woods of N.W. Washington state its not uncommon to get into patches of woods where this is true, but this was for miles. The entire hike in we were both creeped out, speaking to one another often about it. Finally we came to a nice wide, flat spot along the creek and set up camp. My Buddy had a fire going and was in pretty good spirits, I how ever was still uneasy. That night we were both sleeping very fitful. I woke up to what sounded like a large animal running down the trail next to our tent, what was especially creepy was the breathing of the animal, it sounded like it was breathing very heavily, like I could hear panic in its breath. I have spent TONS of time deep in the woods of Washington around elk, deer and black bear, I’ve never heard an animal sound like that. The next morning we quickly packed up and headed back to the car, both of us looking over our shoulders. To this day we still talk about how weird that experience was.

One of the commonalities in the Missing 411 series is search parties coming across the missing person's shoes and/or clothing, as though the person suddenly removed them, choosing to wander lost in the woods barefoot/naked. I always wonder what people mean when they describe their family as "avid outdoorsmen". My brother in law spends the majority of his free time fishing, hunting, camping, etc. And being from Minnesota and now living in Alaska most of these things happen in Winter. I'm sure many would describe him as an avid outdoorsmen. However, I'd trust my city slicker sister to survive longer in the wilds because despite having less experience in the wilderness than my brother in law, she has far more common sense, and is much more risk adverse. Basically in my experience just because you spend a lot of time outside doesn't mean you aren't stupid and won't get lost and do something risky that actually puts you in danger. Also the last guy, my suspicion is he was much further away than they thought and that his voice was esentially an echo that could be heard from that location.

A friend of mine was having seizures where she could still function (driving, walking, eating, etc) but was super confused about what was going on around her and couldn't verbalize anything. The likelihood of multiple people reaching travel or altitude fatigue in the same area is something else that could trigger seizures.

you might think so, but the human brain is very good at hearing what it expects to hear. wind and water can make all sorts of human like sounds that your brain will interpret as whatever you are listening out for. They could well have combed every corner of that cave and found nothing. it is also possible they didn't look hard enough (and for some reason he stopped calling out while they looked for him down there?), but no reason to assume negligence. In all honesty I legitimately can't imagine any grown adult getting lost at Mesa Verde or deciding not to carry a bottle of water with them at all times in that kind of environment. Everyone in this story except the girl who decided not to go looking for him by herself is at fault.

My family is 7th generation to the area and they have lots of stories about things that have happened locally, and I remember when my parents talked about Dale. Thanks to kit kat's update on Dale's remains having been found, I went searching for more info. None of the articles l found gave any useful info on what may have happened or where he was found, just that it was approximately 4 miles from where he was last seen.
I did find this bit very touching.
"In the years since her husband disappeared, Denean Stehling said she returned to the park about a dozen times, even getting in good enough shape to hike the trail he was last seen on herself.
“I just needed to go and sit in the park and talk to him,” she said.
When the remains were discovered, Denean Stehling said, it was difficult to explain what had happened to their 10 grandchildren.

And she went out to where he was and she could barely hear him yelling for help and it sounded like it was underground. And so she called his brothers. And they could hear him calling for help too so they called in the police and volunteers and everyone started digging in that whole area where they heard him and after like 10 ft they hit bedrock. If it's a small opening, maybe along the side of a boulder with brush covering it, then it's understandable how they could hear but not actually find him. He's probably still down in that hole, and he's probably not the only one. That hole is probably awaiting more victims. Scarier than getting hit by lightning.

About the first case, people tend to forget that sometimes humans just... snap. I've heard so many stories of regular people who just became erratic suddenly, doing weird things and going weird places. When these situations happen and there's people around they can usually get help, but if the person is alone there's a huge probability that they will get lost and/or hurt. People are fascinating.

I've grown up in Washington since middle school and can confirm that some of the woods here is odd. There was a woodsy area I hiked in when I was in high school just to walk around by myself. It wasn't too big of a wood area. Suddenly the noise just cuts out. There were no animal sounds at all. When I realized it, I stopped and looked around. I didn't think much of it until I took a couple steps and suddenly had an overwhelming feeling that I needed to get out of there and I was being watched. I was NOT welcome. So I left as quickly as I could and never went that deep in there again.

You are so correct! I can't tell you how many crimes/murders and accidents have a period of time where the victim can be heard screaming for help...most of the time it's rationalized away by the people hearing it, or in rarer cases like this one, it's reported but only superficially checked out, a quick one over of the area and that's that. There has been a handful of cases like these on Mr. Ballen's channel...matter of fact, just saw one yesterday on this channel (Ballen's shorts) where a young lady working at Disney got trapped in the carousel (used as a 6 segmented stage), where every time it took a turn her body was dragged and mangled...6 times! Her screams of help were heard by many but all assumed it was part of the show, until the very end when a lady told an attendant they should probably check out the screaming lady.
Poor woman, clearly lived for most of the horrific ordeal and could have been saved, like all the other victims heard screaming for help in so many of these stories... if just found in time. I hope anyone reading this gets help ASAP when hearing someone cry out for it and don't take no for an answer...make sure the screams are checked out by the authorities. Personally, from now on if I ever hear someone crying out for help, I will assume it's a dire emergency until it's proved otherwise.

The trance angle needs to be researched. My 13 year old son almost disappeared on a trip we made to Mexico. We were staying in a hotel on the ground floor. My wife and I both woke up at the same moment in the middle of the night, that was strange in itself, and we were both noticing our two sons in the next bed. My eldest was sitting up. My wife called his name. He acted as if he didn't hear her. Then he stood up, walked to the sliding door, opened it, climbed over the railing on the patio and walked out onto the lawn alongside the pool. We called his name again and no response. He walked about 50 yards to the edge of the pool, stopped and stood for a full minute, then turned, walked back to the room, shut the door and laid back down. His movements throughout were robotic and trance-like, and his eyes were wide-open. The next morning we all woke up and asked him what he was doing. He had no recollection of the event whatsoever. We still have no explanation. This was beyond sleep-walking. And even if it wasn't, maybe what we call sleep walking is connected to some strange force that is trying to manipulate minds when they are in a low-alert, sleep-state. So many of these stories make me think of my son. I think, had we not awakened and seen the whole thing, with the ability to catch him before he could have gotten much further, I fear we would have lost him that night.

@@andrewbecker9062 I agree with you. But my point is, we really don't know "the why" behind sleepwalking. Your examples only confirm my point, that it is possible something can use this human weakness to lead people away... or if it's a brain issue like schizophrenia (which is caused by a chemical imbalance), then perhaps it explains why things like this happen to certain people. I have heard of people who "came to their senses" someplace after a long hike when not thinking about their surroundings or paying attention and suddenly realizing they were lost. Same concept.

@@andrewbecker9062 I saw a great youtube video of Navajo policemen telling stories of the strange and supernatural on the Reservation. One officer described a personal experience of making a two hour drive to another city in AZ for training -- I know what those roads in Northern AZ and New Mexico can be like -- mind-numbing. Anyway, he remembers making a turn on a bend in the road and then his mind went blank and when he "woke up" he was at his destination. The weird part wasn't just the "zoning out" but the fact that he also arrived 45 mins early. He says to this day he still can't account for the time difference or remember what happened at the moment he "zoned out." I had a similar experience when I lived in Hawaii. I clearly remember a strange man, a short Pacific Islander, walking up to me and saying something at the moment it happened. I lost 10 mins of time after that. Hahaha, I remember because I was sure I had been hypnotized and robbed because I was standing in front of a bank machine. But no, I still had all my money and credit cards. But what transpired in those ten minutes when I went blank? Who knows...

I use to go camping around Index, WA all the time when I was a kid. To say the least, that area is very unsettling. The woods were always very quiet. And it always felt like someone was watching.
You'd see abandoned vehicles in the middle of the woods too.

There was a missing dead guy parked in a truck for a few years before someone noticed there was a dead guy in the truck. I’ve seen abandoned vehicle all over here in AZ .

I agree they dropped the ball on this one..his family knew he should have been back and the fact that he was experienced, and still out there was all the more reason for concern as he knew his family was waiting. Unfortunately, every minute counted here!! 😕
