Dame Edna is like a Hyacinth Bucket with the pop culture know-how and bite of Louella Parsons and the quick wit of Phyllis Diller. There's a lot that goes into creating a character like that and maintaining that character, but a big one is knowledge. I know Barry reads the news religiously, but he also must keep up with cultures from around the world and with celebrities that are popular, whether he personally finds them interesting or not. No matter how old he gets, his memory, recall, lightning-fast responses/jokes, and constant learning never dull. We have a lot of screwball humor and excessive vulgarity these days and that's easy. Comedy like this is a craft.
No. Hyathinth is a commoner thinking she's above other. Edna is a megastar, the only one who can joke about the royal family with their approval. Nothing 8n common whatsoever. The voice perhaps...
@@estoliar2 She is upper middle class, and the main thing they have in common is they are both very into social status, popularity, and putting others down.
@@zumanitydelights251 I hear you but she went from middle class to damehood (characters I mean) and "megastar". I agree with you to a certain extent. But Edna has had many shows, met the royals and famous people, whereas Mrs Bucket stayed nothing. She was ashamed of her roots. Edna never was :)
Comic genius with knobs on. Dame Edna's unique and unrivalled skill to be rude to her guests, usually homing in on a aspect of their lives they thought they'd put behind them, and raise a huge laugh while doing so... and then following through with a qualifying remark (equally rude) which appears to soften the insult, thereby raising further uproarious laughter. A talent that doesn't grow on trees. Wonderfully spontaneous fun, especially at the expense of some American celebrities who aren't in tune with the humour. In this episode Barton and Bolton ook mystified most of the time, while Weaver probably understands the joke but doen't find it particularly funny. But it is often the expressions on Dame Edna's guests faces that makes the gag even funnier.
I first saw Dame Edna on tv years ago here in the usa. I adore her, so much better than anything on tv then and now! Thanks so much for this show, it is so much fun!

That is so funny. None of them got to speak. They just sat there and copped it and enjoyed it.
Very true😂
No one can match the genius of this man. I saw him live and never laughed so hard.
I saw Dame Edna at The London Palladium when Barry was about 82... Incredibly funny live, laughed so much...one of the funniest people of all time. Xx
Exactly the same when I saw him in a pantomime in Wimbledon!
Would have loved to seen him
On behalf of the Dame I must protest that she is not her manager Humphries ;)
Agree. Barry Humphries as Dame Edna was BRILLIANT and one of a kind.
Dane Edna is about the only person who can compliment and insult you at the same time!🤣
You havent been to kansas have you?
I had an aunt who did that, except that she would leave out the compliment part.
Jimmy Glick does it, complimenting and insulting at the same time...with the emphasis on the insult 😏
Very true, a key part of Dame Edna's delightful personage :-)
If anyone can cheer you up Dame Edna can....I just LOVE her. ❤
RIP, Barry Humphries, aka. Dame Edna Everage. You gave us possums many reasons to laugh. 💜
