  • The narrower of the two new Playmaker skis from Elan, this 91 uses the same construction, a very similar shape, but its narrower footprint changes its personality ever so slightly compared to the 101.

    As a ski nerd, I'd love to see a video that is based on bindings. I know pivots are preferred by most there at SE, but there seem to be a variation of different bindings that are on the videos (demo and regular). maybe just a sit down video that talks about binding, brand preferences, etc.
    Keep up the great content!

      They already have this video. I know because I researching different binding and I watched it yesterday 😂

      @@mikelarryy5 i'll have to deep dive on the content then. thanks

      As Mike mentioned, we have done a video like that before, but I also think it's probably time for a new one. We could do it a little differently and just have an informal, casual chat between Bob and I about our personal preferences? We'll do something to get back to binding content soon, promise. In the meantime, here's the video Mike is referencing: ruclips.net/video/RqF6AWejbsY/видео.html

    It's not like I need another pair of skis but the 91 would be a fun ski to have off piste on those in between days. My main squeeze for the trees is the Dynastar M-Free 99 but this one seems like it would be a good choice to extend the snow cycle and stay off piste another day or two. I might add that I really messed up my back 3 weeks ago to the point that I couldn't even think about skiing but the fact that I watched the whole review means i must be getting better. Thanks Bob and Geoff!

      Nice! About the recovery, that is. It's a bit different of a feel from the M-Free in that the Playmaker's edges are considerably thinner than the Dynastar. This gives it more precision, but isn't quite as damp. If you're looking to gain quickness and agility, the Playmaker 91 is one of the best in the bunch and will likely fit your needs quite well.

    Awesome review like always boys. Can't wait buy a pair and take both the Ripsticks and the Playmakers to the hills and switch up.

      I skied both. If you like the ripstick and want a twin tip, you should be very happy with the playmaker. I think this construction works better in a twin tip than an all mountain ski (at least for east coast skiing)

      @@carterfan80 Exactly what I'm hoping for. I have been skiing the 88s for 3 years both East and West and love them but they like to stay locked in and harder to smear.

    • @carterfan80
      @carterfan80 Год назад +1

      @thehungariankid I owned the 88s. Wasn't fond of them on firm snow. (NY and southern VT) But I thought they were fun on soft groomers/spring snow and great for small snowfalls.
      I bought the first generation eighty eight. All the reviews said they "simulated a ski with metal really well" I think I misinterpreted that. I had been skiing Kastle mx 74s for 2 years (and fischers before that). No comparison. Lol. I sold them and bought more kastles and qst 92s. Qsts are better floating , more smeary and more damp than ripstick imo.... (But the carving is not great)

    Hi Guys, How does the Playmaker 91 compare to the Ripstick 88? Thank you :)

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  10 месяцев назад +1

      The main difference is that the Ripstick has a lot more energy and grip out of the tail. The Playmaker is a bit easier to use in the bumps, trees, and certainly park, but for mainstream all-mountain skiing, the Ripstick has more upside.

    Love the content! I'm looking at either the Elan playmaker 91 or the Atomic bent 90. I wont be doing an park but looking for something playful on mountain, that can do trees and moguls. Which would you recommend.

      I think the Bent 90 is one of the best tree and bump skis out there. Playmaker holds its own for sure, but Bent is special in this regard. I'd go that route.

    good video. Is it time to glue on lines of vertical wooden chopsticks on the wall to prevent the skis from sliding off, maybe some carpet or even kitchen non slip drawer base material.

      I dunno... keeps us on our toes! At one point it started to fall and fell right into my hand, so that was sweet!
      Real talk... you can expect a brand new studio within... the next 12 months I'd say.

    hey how do these compare to an atomic bent 90, rossignol sender 90 pro or a line chronic 94 or armada arv 9? thanks!

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  4 месяца назад +1

      I think it's more similar to the Bent than the others--Sender 90 uses a pretty stiff paulownia wood core and isn't much of a twin tip--more of a tweener ski. Chronic is very flexible in the tips and tails but is very stout and sturdy underfoot, so not as consistent as the other two. Armada has great energy and serves well in both all-mountain and park. I think for the Playmaker to be considered all-mountain/versatile, it'd need some more oomph to it--it's pretty darn light and mobile.

    Hey guys. Always love your material. Best objective feedback I’ve seen online. Thank you. To my question. I have some enforcer 94’s. Love them. Very stable at high speed. They require a little speed and input to perform the way you want. I wanted a ski that did the same thing but was quicker in tight terrain and was easier from an energy expenditure point of view so I was convinced to buy the Ripstick 96 and ever since that purchase, I find my self rarely grabbing the enforcers. Seems to do everything the enforcers do with far less input and I tend to get higher lean angles in turns, perhaps the flex of the ski enables that. I ski Mount Snow, VT primarily but go out west for a week or two per year and I am looking for a ski to add to the quiver that is a bit more west coast appropriate and for local powder days. I want super fast turns in double black moguls and trees when time matters or you hit a tree . Would you recommend the Playmaker 101’s or the MFree 99’s for that situation? Thank you again for your feedback.

      Thanks for the kind words, and agree that many skiers will have more success on a Ripstick than an Enforcer--a bigger range there for sure. As far as your western ski, the Playmaker is quite a bit lighter and more mobile than the M-Free, which has a surprising amount of stability due to the hybrid core. If you are looking for something that is more maneuverable and playful, the Playmaker fits that bill, and will have some of the same characteristics of the Ripstick that you like in terms of carbon and light weight. The M-Free feels more solid, but is still very easy to turn--you will get more stability here, and especially on the trails. It seems like super fast turns fall more under the Playmaker's umbrella to me.

    i really should stop buying skis.. i have been out here for over 2 years and i still don't have it figured out.. those rock hard groomer days.. nothing beats some good carvers.. but when we get powder/crud/slush/and my new term is the sticky snow when it is really cold, there are so many different options/philosophies..
    my big thing with softer skis is if they are too reactive.. i stopped skiing when it stopped freezing at night.. i didn't want to get caught in an avalanche.. my 104 Frees are perfect when the snow just starts melting.. i threw out my back on the skis during one of those days that the powder turned to crud.. that might be a good application for both those 101s and those 91s..
    i have been thinking about getting some Mantra 96s.. i tested some Mantra 102s and i really enjoyed them and i was skiing crud.. i do see a lot of people out here in Colorado skiing them.. i did find a pretty good deal on some 96s.. anyways, i have had 3 other pairs of Volkl and i couldn't get any of them to turn but those 102s i could.. i probably should demo some 96s before i buy..
