30 years ago, I bought the remotest house in Southern Scotland and lived there for 21 years, in the heart of a great forest; I purchased it from a naturalist named Mike Tomkies, who became a good friend. He had been a celebrity journalist in the 50s and 60s and had been engaged to Alexandro Bastedo, but she was about to start the Champions TV series and all that entailed. They felt it may be too early to marry, and they split up. He never got over it and became a recluse, leaving Hollywood, living rough in Canada as a logger, and gradually getting involved with Eagles and Bears. Mike wrote many books on wildlife, including one on the Hollywood wildlife. He told me she was the most beautiful woman he had ever known. He said of her. " she was the "most stunningly beautiful creature" he had ever seen." Mike died a few years ago; he was a fascinating man.

Alexandra Bastedo a classy beautiful lady, inside and out. She had intelligence, beauty compassion and was also a great actress. She shunned the falsity of media and tried to lead a private life out of the public eye whilst being active as a private citizen in her local community. Her concern for animals was demonstrated not just in words but also actions. RIP.

Alexandra was a close neighbour in West Chiltington and her animal sanctuary is still going strong. I only met her once but she was very pleasant and elegant. I had no idea she was buried in that particular churchyard, it’s one I cycle past regularly on my way up to the South Downs. I’ll stop next time and pay my respects, she was a wonderful caring woman from what I understand. RIP Alexandra, taken too young.

Very interesting video for me, i've idolised this woman (and Diana Rigg) ever since i was a primary school kid back in the sixties ..... I used to watch the Champions, and the Avengers as I was growing up, and i still watch the repeats of both series even today .... Alexandra Bastedo was stunning, an absolute goddess, and a very caring person to both the people she loved, and animals.

He was in shock and had left his wallet in the cafe. She had conventional cancer treatment early on Simon told me. Radiotherapy and Chemo is a brutal treatment. I love Alexandra in the Champions and copied her hair do's When my husband and I returned to UK we discovered our cats had FIV although we had had them checked before we left Portugal. I read a magazine in which Alexandra said her rescue animals were treated with alternative medicine. One cat had survived 10 years with FIV. I contacted her and asked for her advice. She gave me details of how to treat them. She was so compassionate and helped me to cope with them. She communicated regularly and we chatted online. Obviously I supported the rescue centre. Then my husband realised he knew her husband Patrick Garland whom he met whilst acting both were acting and directing in NY. She was the epitome of elegance, generosity and just simple friendliness. I was so sad when she lost Patrick. Like myself and my husband they had been unable to have children and were vegetarian. When my eldest cat died she suggested putting a photo in memory of him in the centre. I will never forget her. She had a very special quality as well as real unadulterated beauty.

We used to go around touring in various theatres for groups, improvisation etc, loved it, great memories. Anyway we were at a theatre once cant remember exactly but was in Sussex. Nial came back stage with a lady and introduced us all to her. Nial asked if anyone knew or reconised this lady, i was the only one to know who she was, shook my hand, we had a group pictire taken, however never got to see or have a copy. A truely beautiful lady with such a magical voice. A beautiful memory, just cant remember full details. Loved the Champions then and even now. Thanks Paul😊

Back in the sixties what young lad's including myself was not in love with Alex, she was stunning to say the least loved The Champions which I believe there is only one Champion left William Gaunt who played Richard Barrett, Stuart Demon passed not so long ago who played Craig Sterling. Thanks For The Share Paul, (RIP Alex xxx.)

The Aphrodite Inheritance. Great series. She really was the most beautiful woman, but her philanthropy was nice to hear about.

Alexandra was stunningly beautiful. I had a girl crush on her while she was acting in The Champions in the late 60s. I didn't know she was no longer with us, so thank you for this video.

I live just a couple of miles away from where she is buried, I loved her in The Champions and admired her for her animal charity work. So sad she died quite young, so glad her charity is still going.

All I remember her from is The Champions which I used to watch religiously as a kid. I thought she was the most beautiful woman on earth. I must have seen her on Absolutely Fabulous but not recognised her and I never watched Eastenders. Thanks for that pretty random blast from the past Paul.

Nice one Paul. I remember watching the very first episode of The Champions back in 1968. And was hooked right from the first. Still watch it today when its on. Sadly Stuart Damon (Craig Sterling) passed away last year, which leaves William Gaunt (Richard) as the only survivor. Wasn't she a beauty though ? Lovely place to be buried. Shame the church wasn't open. I'd like to have had a peak....

Thank you very much for uploading this. I watched "The Champians" as a boy and have always adored Alexandra Bastedo. I never worked with her, sadly, although I did get to work with William Gaunt in a tour back in the '80s. However, an actor friend of mine did work with her and confirmed what a lovely person she was.

We really do have some beautiful churchyards. Thanks Paul, for showing us round, and for keeping the memories alive. I really liked the new addition in this one too. Seeing you walking round the area without the camera - nice 👍
