    I think people forget and avoid the MD-80/83/88 by Leonardo because it's one of the most expensive modules for MSFS ever produced! That plane is $82 currently and never goes on sale.

      If that's what it takes to have true high fidelity aircraft, then so be it, I guess. We're currently living in a sea of mediocrity with developers such as Captain Sim, Latin VFR, Aerosoft, and, I dare say, FSS. These developers get WAY too much of the spotlight. It's refreshing to have options such as the Maddog, Hotstart Challenger, etc.

      When you compare the level of system detail to developers such as FSS, who are charging $40 for an aircraft that still doesn't even have a proper FMS, or the fact that PMDG charges $70 for the 738, I think the Maddog is reasonable. I think we're getting used to the prices that mediocre developers such as LatinVFR and Asobo(ATR) are setting that we think all prices should be that low. This is a proper study level aircraft.

      What, are the 17 different A320s not keeping you entertained? LOL It's comical how many Airbus aircraft, particularly A320s, exist currently in the flight sim world. I've lost count between MSFS and XPlane. It's actually a bit infuriating with how little choice we have in finding true "study level" aircraft. It's either an A320 or 737 and I'm a bit bored at this point. Thankfully we have the Maddog and other planes such as the Hotstart Challenger or FlyJSim Q400 that gives a nice break from A320 fatigue.

    I have never trusted the Leonardo MD80's VNAV Climb after takeoff. My climb height procedure goes (1) "Half", set vertical speed mode and cut your climb rate in half, or set 1,000fpm, (2) EPR LIM and Climb power, when at thrust reduction height, then transition to (3) IAS mode at 250kn. I'll give it over to VNAV once I pass 10,000 so it can set the econ climb speed and handle the transition to mach hold automatically.

  • @davidathay3680
    @davidathay3680 6 месяцев назад

    Nice to see you take this for a spin- seems like an overlooked and forgotten plane in the MSFS community.
    I find myself reaching for this plane quite often in MSFS- it's a "mainline" plane but doesn't feel out of place going to most of the smaller stations. And I enjoy the challenge of remembering to do everything- the semi-automation of the aircraft systems means you really have to pay attention to what's going on with the flight. Makes you appreciate the automation in the 737NG and Airbus products, or even regional jets.
    At work I've been flying with a lot of guys who flew these IRL before they went away- almost nobody misses them. I think I would have been fine except for the fact most of them did not have FMS, so they were navigating VOR to VOR with paper flight plans. But the Leonardo model is very nicely equipped with dual FMS, ACARS, and EFB. The EFB and GSX integration are good and make for a really nice experience, IMO.
    (Full disclosure- I'm a beta tester so I probably spend more time thinking about this plane than most!)

    I think I remember somewhere that the real MD80 pilots confirmed that the VNAV was a bit unreliable directly after takeoff and they normally would handfly it until after acceleration phase and in stable climb. It's been a while since I looked into it though, but I have since just handflown it after takeoff following the FD and it has been fine with that procedure.

    • @robbyyant6213
      @robbyyant6213 4 месяца назад

    Makes me think that I should buy this aircraft. I worked on these on the ramp in Syracuse, NY. In the late 80's and the 90's. Hated working on them, the rear cargo bin was a B**#h. All oil canned on the floor and jagged sheet metal, those doors were hell to load cargo through. But I loved the look of this airplane. I remember the wing were super critical in cold weather operations. The only plane we had to de-ice on frosty mornings. Pain in the ass, but pretty all the same. The only worse airplane from a ramp standpoint was the F-28 and F100.

    The Maddog is the most fun airliner in msfs in my opinion. It is a pity that Leonardo approached MSFS with an old mindset and released it at a very steep price and they didn't bother updating the model from P3D so it looks subpar on screenshots, but the systems modeling etc are great.

    • @robbyyant6213
      @robbyyant6213 4 месяца назад

      I mean, if you compare the price to what other developers are offering, it's not bad. PMDG charges $70 for the 738 and even mediocre developers are charging $30 to $40 for aircraft that don't even give half of what this plane offers in terms of systems depth and flight modeling. FSS is charging $40 for EJets that don't even have a properly modeled FMS.

When I say barely flyable, I don't consider being able to takeoff and fly around to be flyable in a regional jet, because that would be an incredibly low bar that even Captain Sim could meet. What I mean is that there's so much missing that keeps you from flying it as you would in the real world. To me THAT is too much money.
