    400g (nearly 1 pound) = 200 kcal, that is very low nutrition value. They are made of substance that human body can not digest and flavorings. 😂😂😂 Definitely not other humans because 1 pound of meat would have 600+ kcal

    • @ProjectENIS

      Good point, it's freeze dried too, so 400g is ALOT of food. That said, it's still more calories then diet food like konjac jelly haha

      My guess is Celulose fiber and artificial protein suplimemt. Regularity in low-G and zero-G environments is just as important as it is on earthlike and near-earthlike gravity. 200cal per chunk is pretty low for 400g. Low-cal diet is important in transport/travel hravy jobs where the driver/pilot/crew is largely sedentary. The end result is a substantial food that fills but doesn't digest and process to fat.
      Of course, that doesn't explain the option to make a lardass in the character creator.
      Wine chunks flavors are probably just gelatin and flavored alcohol.
      My personal favorite thing to say is "Cabernet Chunkingnon" because it's the only one that worked the word "chunk" into the existing word.

      I'm not so sure, there definitely is fine dining available and gastronomy/chef work is clearly highly respected with a lot of potential recipes available. I think it's likely that it's just an addictive situation like a McDonalds cheeseburger which nobody would call fine dining or healthy or gourmet, but most can admit are still fairly tasty. Further, scientifically the oils/fats, flavors etc can become quite addicting. It's also a fairly cheap and fast solution, just like fast food is for us.

    I get the vibe that they're made from tofu or something similar, not meat at all, purely plant protein. I think it'd be funny to have a quest that talks up the horror of chunks, have several characters give you hints that they're made from Soylent green or something, only to find out at the end that it's totally innocent and actually really clean and the founder is losing his mind because everyone thinks it's a horrible secret.

    • @goblinloremaster6101
      @goblinloremaster6101 Год назад +15

      That would be a hillarious twist of fate that would subvert the classic Solyent green trope by simply playing it straight and having Chunks just be plain tofu chunks mixed with protein additives like eggs, whey, and other common proteins (Possibly mushrooms for a meat texture). But everyone in the settled systems are so used to expecting the worst that some nut hires the player to investigate the company's main hidden HQ and the end result has either destroys the company or has them lose their secret recipes due to a bunch of idiots.

They don't know what's in them because they're made of all kinds of stuff. Tissue, Stalks, Seeds, Saps, Roots, Leaves, Flowers, Carapaces, Glands, Bones, Hides and Vital Fluids. Given everything we know about Chunks, my guess is that there isn't anything necessarily nefarious about them, it's just that they are completely artificial. And not in the sense like synthmeat, which seems to try to mimic real meat to the celular level, I mean like flavoured plastic. Some sort of polymer that though edible, is actually indegestible, and the calories in the label are just enough nutrient supplements they put in the cubes before pumping them full of artificial flavoring. That would explain their indefinite shelf life, the fact that all of them have the same nutritional content, and their desire for secrecy

    I really hope that in the NG+ universes, there is one where you get Spheres or something, and an actual location or ship for more background. Equally though, I suspect because of their promotional stuff all involving chunks, they've held back the end of the questline so they can do new flavours for the promo of the expansion too. It feels like this is just prep for something later anyway. Alongside maybe starbases and mechs. And almost certainly the House Va'ruun home-world.
    Beth games are too easily data-mined too. If anything content-wise is going to drop as a free update, it'll be when the creation kit launches and it would be something of a promotional nature like this.

Tofu has almost no flavor of its own and there are entire restraunts that specialize in making Tofu taste like meat and other foods. Something tells me that Chunks isn't made from soybeans (mainly the burger and cheesesteak is some sort of gel) but the technique to flavor Tofu and potato chips is likely the same. Not sure Chunks would bother retexturizing the product for a better mouth feel.

      There are some Chunks vending machines that look very much like 3D printers, so I feel like that's not to far off. Plus they all have that embossed logo. I don't honestly think there is any kind of deep dark secret here. Just that it's a corporation doing what corporations do and producing a sort of cheap, edible paste slurry that's flavored and colored to look like various foods, then printed or pressed into branded cube shapes. Since it's available to be eaten right out of the package I don't think it's freeze dried. Those foods are normally reconstituted with hot water. Just shelf stable food cubes.
      Then again, this is Bethesda writing, and if there's anything they love doing it's having companies like this go too far in the pursuit of profit.

    Chunks packaging is made to be displayed on a wall hook. Chunks packaging is made to have a uniform appearance. It is made to have shelf appeal and a high level of brand recognition. It is made specifically not to show off the product. That is a shame, because Chunks actually have a good appearance.
    Chunks packaging is actually bad for shipping. The Chunks themselves are wonderful tiny cubes that could be super efficiently packaged. The packaging they come in has this huge backing that ruins the wonderful compactness of the product. That huge backing makes it easy to hang from a hook, or put on a store shelf, and easy to recognize from a long distance away. But with that backing the tightest you can pack Chunks is by having 2 of them facing each other and rotated 180 degrees in the case they come in. Without the packaging you'd be able to squeeze about 8 in the same space 2 take up now. And like hell you'd ship these out of a factory without the packaging. All sorts of people would make strange accusations if they knew the finished product was being shipped around outside of the packaging. Marketing nightmare.

    I found a wall with a scrawled comment saying something like "does anyone else think chunks taste like plants?" The follow up is a yes. It's just some sort of plant protein with artificial flavors, and fancy texture methods. But the reason we can't find a Chunks factory is because there is no factory. There are a load of unusable vending machines which look kind of like 3D printers, and they have some text on them. I think they were meant to be Chunks printers, even though there are working Chunks vending machines. Though, the Chunks vending machines might be making Chunks on the spot anyway, which would explain why they're everywhere.

    Chunks probably are just a tofu equivalent turned into fast food/space travel convenient food with indefinite shelf life. Soybeans wouldnt be that hard to grow comparatively, especially with more widespread hydroponics. Given the commercial arena of starfield, you could probably buy large amounts of land on mulitple planets with suitable enough conditions without too many hiccups outside of random alien creatures, or pirates as a worst case. Of the settled systems its also the only fast food joint i can think of, so easy monopoly.

    I really never interpreted Chunks as anything sinister, it's just Space Food (as in, not meant to substitute real food, it's just meant for consumption in a Zero-G environment), but it's so cheap that many poor or impoverished people can only afford to eat Chunks.
    Also, it's based around old food that NASA was working on, where food would be dehydrated and pressed into cube form, and then packaged in vacuum sealed bags. The Meal Tray Kits you can find are also based around old NASA food solutions.

    I had a question back then, how to eat those? Looking at the block, it is quite big. I would say it is comparatively as big as a BLT sandwich made from two loaves. They're not bite sized. And when I'm looking the customers at the new homestead branch, none of them eating any Chunks. One person eating a literal sandwich, in a Chunks restaurant.
    Also, you said square for packaging efficiency. But the package cannot be said to be easily stacked on top of each other. Even when i think it maybe L shape like in tetris, it still has some gap at the center if you try to stack two Ls by rotating the other one.
    So what if they packaged when arrives at the branch restaurant.
    If it is the case, i also do not think those cubes are able to withstand a lot of weight on top of it without the package. Just imagine that one with the egg.
    Unless,
    A. They transported as liquids. Heated to remove the water content, then add toppings, packaged.
    B. Or bulk solids. Add water, toppings, packaged when arrives.
    If they still consider packaging ergonomics.

    The name "Chunks" hints at junk food. It's just the generic Starfield version of our modern fast food. Bethesda did something similar in Fallout with Nuka Cola. It was the Fallout version of unhealthy synthetic soft drinks that nobody knows what they are made of. Keeping the ingredients secret is essential for low value, unhealthy, synthetic junk food.

    You know there is one inspiration that people are kinda missing in the comments. See back in the original star trek run with spock, kirk, and the rest of the original enterprise crew, they didn't eat normal food. What they consumed on the ship that was created by their replicators were large square cubes that had varying colors of red, blue, and yellow. Seems to me that Starfield simply took that idea and took the next step by making the cubes look like actual food and if that is the case, the chunks could be created from a very primitive form of the replicator. That being a protein sequencer that breaks down waste, table scraps, and literal garbage to their base proteins and resequences them into something new. Which could fit with the idea that the chunks are unhealthy because they are made from literal garbage.

    • @seanthiar
      @seanthiar Год назад

      Don't think they are made by replicators. Met a worker that said he had worked in the chunks kitchens and had still nightmares from it.

    • @goblinloremaster6101
      @goblinloremaster6101 Год назад

      True, but again I'm not saying they have a replicator. I'm saying that they have some massive processing machine that breaks trash down into base proteins to turn into chunks. Which actually might a nice reference to snowblind where roaches (and worse In the books( I wont tell you why off the bat but there is a reason why their brown)) were turned into protein blocks for the poorer sections of the train.@@seanthiar
