James completely nails the character, not just the specific accent but the attitude and personality. After watching the first series I was completely stunned to hear how he actually talks I didn't realise he wasn't a local lad. He genuinely captured such a specific type of young male West Yorkshire type it's hard to explain if you're not from there. But it's spot on.

In the first series, it seemed a lot of the actors who obviously aren't from Yorkshire or Lancashire were hamming it up with a lot of 'eeh I'll just stick t'kettle on' and the like (which I feel patronises the fuck out of us notherners) but it wasn't overdone thankfully and considering the monster Royce is a real life posho, he did pretty well, considering....one thing the show didn't get across is the fact that Hebden has been overrun by moneyed twats who have elevated all the property prices beyond the reach of the locals and is full of shops that sell scented candles for seven quid, FFS.

James, Sarah, Siobhan et al all deserve their glorious acting kudos, but I’m surprised and saddened that my fellow Happy Valley fans in the comments are not giving the mad respect he deserves to Ryan, hauntingly, brilliantly, and angelically brought to life in one of the most extraordinary child acting performances I’ve ever seen, by Ryhs Connagh.
So I’ll give this gifted young actor the props he deserves.
He’s a huge part of the show’s S1 & S2 success. I’m glad it’s discussed here in this Q&A but I wish the comments acknowledged the same.

Claire actually mothered Ryan. Catherine just sacrificed for Ryan. And no one gives Claire a break. Except Neil. Thank goodness for Neil to give her some happiness. One episode left for me to watch. Ryan saying he was trying to figure out for himself how he felt about Tommy was brilliant writing and delivery. Catherine had such empathy for Allison but such hate for some others. She had a range. Best scene coming to Alison’s house. I found myself just yelling at the tv - just tell Ryan. But I do understand the police shelter side of Catherine and why she didn’t. Hate the teacher/husband more than the pharmacist. Some good writing and acting there as well. Could not have been a doctor but wanted to a doctor and family wants to live off income as if he was a doctor. The few lines his daughters had really brought that background out. He was playing doctor with those pills. Gosh Tommy was such a twisted character. Good acting. Back to Neil in a different year he would have been seen as a victim of Victoria Fleming. John as well. Their marriages would not have lasted the affairs that started it but they should not have lost jobs, children, respect from others. Before the murder of Victoria of course. I never felt bad about Victoria or Joanna. It wasn’t hate on Joanna. Her husband took the pills she was supposed to take. I do not even see her as doing illegal drugs. But there was such enjoyment of her husband being in a predicament when missing and when her body discovered. I loved he lost control though all the padlocks in the house. And I don’t blame the pharmacist. She kept changing the story. He and his daughters were threatened higher up. She should not have been killed of course or abused by the husband. The kids need to be away from him. Such a complicated series. Back to the first scene of the entire series think all Ryan needed like the guy in the first scene of season 1 was a demonstration of how petrol turns to flame. Tommy poured petrol on him for pity sakes. So glad I could buy the series and watch the whole of it. Really feel for the fellow about to get married. If Ann just ran the plate number. Gosh. They wanted the uniform’s assist yet they paid them no mind?
