Aside from the killer band and songwriting, Dury was a phenomenal performer. His movements were so theatrical and precise, the expressiveness of his eyes alone could carry a music video. I love his spontaneous reaction when the mic causes some feedback. I guess he knew that his body was limited in movement so he made the most of what he had, and he used it fantastically. Not every frontman can be this charismatic while standing in one spot. An actor, a musician, a mime and a sad clown.
Big Hug. We saw them only four times in 78/79. THE best band I ever saw, bar none. When you find the Time Travel solution, I'll come with you. More Big Hugs.
An amazing group of real musicians in the punk era with a lead vocalist who was like nothing that came before or after .Ian was a real one off ,What a legend
Damn they were good. Not many bands with such talented players. Never a band that had the funky, punky, jazzy, rocking multi-flavours like the Blockheads. Still miss Ian.
Mister Dury, the man who, interview after interview, insisted that he wanted to play music to dance to. While he would never, ever be able to dance himself…
@@pateris Yeah, very poignant. Dury was a tiger of a man, fronting a fabulous band. Interviews nicely as well ; a geezer but also a smart thinker, yet someone you could seemingly share a pint with and chill out with. Badly missed but great to have the music as his legacy.
Charlie Charles was a fantastic drummer, perfect fit for the band. Sad about his illness and demise. They were all great musicians, every one of them ! RIP Ian & Charlie !
I recorded this broadcast off a crappy TVset on a tape recorder in '78 and listened to it some dozen times, nearly knew all the comments by heart. But only seen it once, just until now. thx a bundle!
Newcastle Australia 1981 Civic Theatre - I was a teen, blown away, stood up and danced my arse off to the whole set - to the chagrin of the bouncers . My best friend and I loved 'New Boots and Panties' and 'Do It Yourself" (and Kilburn and the High Roads) and we used to sing all the lyrics all the way to school every day. Then they came to town and we saw them, it was the best band ever! to this day. In that year we saw Bowie, Cold Chisel and Ian Dury and the Blockheads and those three gigs were mind-blowingly great. I've seen great gigs since (including Wilco and Norman Watt Roy - twice!) but that particular gig remains an outstanding experience in my life.
I been a musically myopic blues guy for my entire life...now 76 years...but recently checked these guys out on youtube...couldn't believe how expert their musicianship is...I feel like a fool tho' for not hearing them while they were on the scene...
Thought I had seen every bit of Ian Dury footage out there but this is a new one and an absolute corker. Seen them live so many times I lost count. This is a great reminder of why I love them so much. Maybe they worked that bit harder to coax some life out of the audience. RIP Ian, Charlie, Strangler and now sadly Derek.
Charlie Charles wasn't flashy, but you get the impression he could handle anything at all, and play through an earthquake without missing a beat. And the combination of him and Norman ... just perfect.
I was working in Travemunde on the east German border used to play this on the beach the Germans eventually got it ended up loving the music that was about 1979 new boots and panties great place lovely times might go back one day
Saw the band two times in "Duseldoof". Once with Third World, second time with the Mr.Pugh Puppet-Show (the best I've ever witnessed) Love the band, Love Mr. Dury, Love the Funk, Love the Kilburn, Love the bass, the sax,m the guitar, the drums, the keys, the ATTITUDE !
This album holds a peculiar spot in the pantheon of brilliant and original music. An absolute favourite that never fails to thrill. From an era where originality and talent were paramount.
I was lucky enough to see them at Buffalo State College , Buffalo NY April 28, 1978. To this day the BEST! live show I've ever seen. Right from the moment Kozmo Vinyl introduced them to the final note of the show pure magic. That night is burned into my brain. The ticket cost $4 AND they spelled Dury wrong on the ticket. We loved Lou Reed but the Blockheads blew him off the stage. Just saying
Apparently true in a few places on that tour - Lou was not well pleased..............(I saw Led Zep and Keith Richard's New Barbarians at Knebworth in 1979 and the next day, Ian Dury at the Hammersmith Odeon - London... - same - Incredible (and we got in free...........Lesley.....There's recording (9 songs) of 9.8.1979 on a site called G-u-i-t-a-r-s One oh one (use the right spelling and numbers)............also recommend "Hold on to your structure" DVD Hammersmith 1985.....I went to the one on the 12th.
I remember Ian duty and the block heads from the 70s when they had just transitioned from kilburn and the hughroaders. I couldn't afford a ticket to go out and see them then but I did go out and get New Boots and Panties.
i was lucky enough to see them live in bournmouth... had a beer afterwards with a couple of the band ....great drummer..he had a double bass drum that night ..all black...ian drury is 1 of a kind

Oh my, oh my: this gig is so HOT, so PERFECT - I must laugh (cry) at Ian's epic struggle to get that audience to live a little... Wonderful Ian and those hottest Blockheads!
So much better live than in the studio. I remember there's a documentary on the "Stiff" label where they said nobody wanted to play after Ian Dury and that's easy to understand. They were just explosive, what a band!
lou reed street hassle tour in minneapolis minnesota at the state theater. did not know who ian dury and blockheads were as i was there to see lou reed. WOW. instant fan of ian dury.
If you are not from East London or Essex a lot of the lyrics might go over your head. A lot of in jokes, wordplay, innuendos and double entendres. God only knows what this German audience made of it all. But top marks for Ian Dury trying to converse with the audience. Still this band can’t half groove and that’s a universal language
I suppose you're right about the East London or Essex bit. But as a partial apology for the German audience I'd like to point out that Ian's mashup of English and mock German is far more difficult to understand than if he had only spoken English. I also saw him with the Music Students in Dartford. They were great, and Ian was Ian, but they weren’t the Blockheads. We also had the second Be Stiff Tour at Chesters which was by far the biggest event we staged. Most of that tour was done by train but the Irish section was by road. Quite a small venue, and they turned up - a party of 52 in a coach with two artics. Dave Robinson was there, dandling a baby on his knee.
It goes without saying how eyewateringly tight the Blockheads are...but this set is really exceptional. Instantly 'In the pocket' with German precision.

I wanted to say a comment like that but all I could do is laugh with pleasure at how much I just fuckin' love him.

Habe ihn auch im Rockpalast live gesehen, war geile Zeit.
Saw him on tor about this time, a very generous performer
He reminds me a bit of Oliver Reed. I friggen love Ian and the Blockheads. Great musicianship and he is quite a presence. Ian is an entertainer.
What I'd pay to see this band today!
They still play.
