I am not South African, however I have lived in South Africa. The information on food shopping is wrong. There are variety of shops in South Africa. And large sizes. They clearly didn't go to larger shops. You can buy in bulk.

In South Africa we pay rent monthly. If ever you pay yearly that would be the arrangement you made with the landlord. We also buy staff in bulks at Macro and Game stores and they are a part of Massmart. We also have a lot of variety and stores. They are right, the bread lasts us 4 days max and on the 3rd day it starts tasting somehow. Also the items in America are bigger than ours, our sizes are smaller. Our grocery stores close at 6pm and extended hours during festive seasons where they will close at 8pm. We wear western attire and we reserve our African attire for special occasions such as family get together, wedding ect.
I really wonder why is it that most African Americans do not practice their culture. Perhaps this is a topic to explore. Great video Fam ❤️
Honestly, it is just another divide and conquer tactic that was embedded in our ancestors’ minds and passed down through the generations. We were taught the American way and taught anything that didn’t look like “American” was wrong. We were taught to hate our nappy hair, light skin is better, and so on. Our people are slowly, but surely finding our way back to ourselves.

I don’t eat American bread shem😅. Our bread is much healthier and I think the US unfortunately has too much foods that have chemicals to make it appear good looking and everything lasts wayyyyy longer than our produce.
I am a white Afrikaner South African and would love to enjoy a braai(BBQ) with you both to discover further differences/similarities in our cultures. We can do a "bring en braai", you bring your drinks and I will provide some proper meat❤
We usually have grocery shopping once a month, buying in bulk. And trading hours works just fine for us 😂.

traditional clothing is now ceremonial in most places in the world. So like asia, south america, europe, africa we wear traditional for weddings and other ceremonies.
In SA we do shop in bulk, especially in low income house hold, there are also wholesales that offer food for affordable price.
They need to come experience SA themselves . No dig at the people in the video but there's so many options that maybe they just never found.
For 24/7 shopping they got Woolies, Pick n Pay and Spar in petrol stations.

This is our kind of shopping. We don’t like to run out of necessities.
In South Africa we do buy bulk. I buy so much in bulk i end up donating most of the foodstuffs to people less fortunate. We have major retailers here with Shoprite being the cheapest and largest.
I have lived in Ghana and i currently live in South Africa.
In Ghana you make an advance payment which is termed an upfront payment for the whole year whilst in South Africa you pay rent on monthly basis.

I think African Americans have their own culture. They were taken to America from America and had to develop their own as a people. Much like coloured people in SA. When she says AAs dont have a culture, i don't agree. Culture changes, it evolves. People were taken from different tribes and nationalitities from africa and they developex an african american culture. I just think its weird when people say "African Americans dont have a culture".

Nah it up to you if you want to buy groceries in bulk or frequently go to the shop but you can buy once for whole full months..
I personally, was equally as shocked when I found out the U.S has 24hr stores.

Well Spar Fontana on Smit and Plein Street, Hillbrow was a 24 hour shop for decades.
I always saw people walking out with groceries at 2am. Trust me.

The reason why people think African Americans do not have culture is because theirs is the most universalize culture - and that is apart from stuff that they created but was claimed by others. Their culture is in the dance, the music, the way they talk and walk. We all know that they are copied by people from around the world

Most of us are surprised how expensive American homes are, as we also consider them boxes. Most American homes are made out of wood and it would be like $5 000 000 😳.
Then you'd hear that in anger they punch walls causing holes in the walls. We don't punch walls here. You really would not want to do that

Food portions in SA are small because we don’t put preservatives on the food so if u buy in bulk or big portions then u will end up throwing away.

Shopping hours depend on which area you live in.There are areas where shops close at 9pm.And convenience stores(at the gas station), usually have a small grocery section and those operate for 24 hours.

actually I was just watching a couple of videos of Nigerian's culture shock here SA and they were shocked that we pay rent monthly, but the system are good in a way that you can have the option to do either way. The part about buyin bulk is confusing to me, coz you can buy bulk if you want to. it's definitely true that America has big portions n a variety, it's a handful of stores here that would give you as much variety in goods
We pay monthly rent and mortgage here in the US. Maybe they just haven’t found it or they don’t live in those areas that offer bulk goods?

We have 24hr express grocery stores at our petrol (gas) stations. Mainly Pick N Pay and Woolworths.
You can do bulk buying at big wholesalers like Makro.

There are bulk shops in SA if you know where to shop, and we have factory outlets where you can buy bulk for cheaper. There are also shops at petrol (gas) stations that are open 24 hours
I think it's important to remember that culture is defined by community. In my opinion, African Americans were unfortunately forced into a more individualist culture which kind of isolates the different afro American groups around the states. I personally would say that it's not that afro Americans have no culture, but rather are multicultural amongst themselves and have different norms and practices according to their individual experiences. It's quite complex for afro Americans and I don't think we should put all yal in one box. The reality there is way different than here and we can't really compare the two, it's just too different but does not equate to an absence of culture.
Also, African American ancestors are from 100's of different African roots, that's why they are still quite different today. They resonate differently with their African roots and I think it's quite a beautiful phenomenon to see. Afro Americans are the entire African continent in one western country..now that's a phenomenon, despite the ugly history, it's a dope thing 🤟🏾

It is very complexed, but simple for us😅. We know we are one, but we are spread all over the U.S. with different lifestyles. It would be the same as thinking South Africa ethnic groups should have the same culture as Ghana ethnic groups. African American culture is multifaceted. Much love, fam!

In New Zealand, our grocery stores are open 7am-10pm normally. And our Malls normally have a grocery chain store in them. But cost of living and housing is really high.
I disagree with the grocery shopping point the couple you're reacting to made. There are literally superstores here in South Africa where you can actually buy food and other items in bulk where a lot of us buy in bulk. There's a very popular one called Makro but I guess that American couple don't know about it, so they could be shopping in stores where they don't sell bulked foods.
You can also have your groceries delivered to you. In the city that I live in, there are about probably over 100 grocery stores
The reason the citizenship thing is not happening. This is because Americans (ALL Americans) in general tend to want to Americanize how we do things here. If you come here and actually want to be part of Africa, we would welcome you with open arms. This is why other areas are welcomed and we tend to be very cautious regarding Americans
So in South Africa we have a store called Makro which is equivalent is Wallmart that's where they actually sell things in bulk and you need to have a card to buy at that store. And those stores ain't all over the place but they limited to certain areas
Weighing in on the food part. Everything they said, was incorrect. We ALWAYS buy in bulk, we have more product varieties, than what's necessary, and we definitely have superior quality, even in bulk. They must have been running to the corner store to buy stuff 🤷🏽♂️😅
There are places like Makro where you can buy in bulk however our produce is much more natural with little preservatives

11:40 Nah we have large supermarkets that are not inside malls that close at 10pm and that's aside from Seven-11. Here in Cape Town during December Festive Season a few actually stay open 24 hours.

Guys South Africa has opened its Borders for most of Africa and the world...its just that for most of the Africans who end up in South Africa, they end up competing for the same job opportunities as the locals so yeah the borders in SA are open for business, but the Country is still grappling with getting the rest of the locals out of poverty..the Government has to think of its people first unfortunately

I think Americans expect South Africa to be like the rest of Africa. Traditional attires are only worn on special occasions here. The African clothes that the Americans know about is clothes representing other African countries and not SA. SA has been colonized so much so that fashion with "European clothes" goes as far back as in the 50s. I think because South Africans do not travel a lot, Americans have the perspective of Nigerians, Ghanaians ect. As to what Africa is or should be.
we have a store called marko where everthing is sold in bulk and its found everywhere so relax you are all good
I believe and know that people who don't buy in bulk due to circumstances and they shop at your normal retailers. Also a lot of us buy in bulk at bigger outlets.
We mostly buy groceries once a month in bulk then things like milk and bread you buy as you need. What's nice we finish work mostly by 5pm and can quickly go to the store or by the gas station store or go on the weekend. So it's cool😊 I think they're getting there to be fully ingrained to how we do things.
Grocery stores. We don't rush there because of the different work hours . US has 9-5 work hours. We have 8-4. So from 4 to 6 or 8 is alot of time

I am from South Africa and the rental situation varies. Depends on where/what you rent. But generally monthly rental with security deposit is the norm. You might get a discount if you opt to rent long term as long as you look after the property.
I don't think they have their information on food right. They are maybe using a small sample size of where they are shopping. There are a lot of variety and choice in SA. You can bulk buy at many places as well. We lack for nothing really. So some misinformation in this video.

Yes we may wear westernized clothing like 100% of the time but there is just this one day where we go all out that's on Heritage Day the 24th of September of every year everybody not everybody but some people go out and they just wear their traditional attires and we celebrate our cultures and traditions
September is Heritage Month ,some of us do adorn our tribe's garments or traditional attires through the month if we please
They are definetly not shopping correctly because if you want bulk shopping you can get it in SA.We have Makro,Games and some other wholesales stores where you can get bulk and bigger sizes if you need it.

In terms of trading hrs for malls, the working hours in SA are generally 8am - 5pm. So you still have time to do groceries after work. If you have an emergency, you can also try convenient stores at most of the fuel stations (albeit prices are a bit more).
Hi guys. Watching from Durban, South Africa, love this cannel. There's no way we would have 24hr stores in SA, the crime rate is too bad out here, those stores would be robbed week in week out. The only business that runs for 24hrs is petrol (gas) stations because even clubs close around 2am.
Please is not about crime it's about Departement of Labor rules and regulation, people in Amerika can 2 or 3 Jobs here you can work only 1 Job because most in things work 24 hours. In SA it's only hotels Restaurant or Clubs and petrol Station s

Same in Ghana, Bread is baked at a nearby bakery every day, mostly mornings,so you get it fresh and natural😅. Some still use the original oven made from mud 😂😂.

There are places that sell milk by the litre where you can take your containers to fill up as much as you want. They also sell cream, yoghurt etc. You just have to find them. Google is your friend.
We do wear our cultural clothes, but only on great occassions, like weddings, parties or family gatherings.
We wear traditional clothing in special events or traditional events. Most of them presents a meaning behind it. If you go to the township you'll see a lot of them especially on weekends. On week days ppl have to work and traditional stuff are mostly done on weekends. Every weekends there are a lot of families doing those traditional stuff. But if you are in the suburbs or town you'll see less obviously
When you renting an apartment in South Africa, you need to pay a minimum of a month in advance and that month installment is kept as an insurance for any damages to the property usually when you have ended your stay where you are renting, when you leave the first installment /deposit is given back to you.

You're like me girl...my mom taught me to buy like 3months worth of groceries... especially non fresh items then top up with veggies, meats and milk on a monthly bulk. If like shopping in bulk, here there are shops like Makro that can satisfy that appetite for you.
I agree with you that African Americans have culture, especially with when you say with music, how you speak and dress which the whole world want to copy, especially South Africans too, however most of what you do especially with music is derived mostly from Africa. It's a mix.
SA celebrates culture, language and tranditions, even by law. We have heritage day, cultural pratices are legal, languages are official vs US where diversity is not celebrated and allowed as much. So it really just melts into each other.
The latest is I think 10pm, it depends where you live, I know some stores in Cape Town close at 10pm
Regarding the shops closing early and i heard a comment that it will be packed because the stores are closing early.Well South africa has a lot of shopping center,so we have malls and shopping center so in one area you can have close to three shopping center and maybe one big mall closer so most people will go to the mall when doing the big grocery shopping because the stores are bigger but the rest of the month you can do all that at the shopping center.As im seating right now at my desk,around me now there is about four shopping center close by from different areas that i can access and shop at.

we pay monthly but sometimes for foreigners you maybe be asked to buy or pay a certain amount upfront to get your documents to stay in the country.
i believe the more expensive the product, it depends on the quality of that product especially the meat ,cheese, fruits and veggies and sometimes some of these things when are not of good quality they go to waist very quickly

Here in South Africa we don't eat bread that is 3 days old even if it will still look fresh. On the third day it goes straight into the bin.
You pay a deposit upfront but your rent is month to month. Our cultures are more prominent when it comes to food, behaviour/mannerisms and when you're around families.
You see cultural dress on heritage day. The only people that wear cultural clothes every day is Afrikaans farmers because it's practical for their work. You'll also see Afrikaans men tend to wear shorts and walk barefoot when others are dressed warm..if you see that, there's no doubt that they are an Afrikaans "boer seun"/farm boy.
Unfortunately there are a lot of back and forth on foreigners in our country.. the EFF leader said, this is Africa and all Africans are welcome in South Africa..but the moment that jobs got scarce, they launched an attack on foreigners, saying that they are taking their jobs for lower pay. It's a very controversial subject.. we had horrific xenophobic attacks that were just barbaric.. there is some group going around at the moment, literally chasing foreigners out of their shacks, jobs and businesses..but this is all focused on the very poor..the middle-class and upper-class is not affected at all.

My Niece and her husband live in a small town in Western Australia. There's only one supermarket, it's at least half an hours drive to a larger one. In that town even pre-covid the price of fruit and vegetables was very expensive. We love him for his personality, he's a sweet, kind, cuddly gentleman who happens to be from a wealthy old German family. They have a farm with a large fruit and vegetable garden. They give it away to people they know who are on a fixed income. He immigrated to Australia with his family as a teenager.
She chooses to work. I remember once when my sister whom I live once went to visit her Mum/our sister and they were also there. She was working on her budget on a computer. He explained what she was doing and said "My accountant does that for me and maneges my investments." My Sister whom I live with looked shocked 😲 for a moment, before remembering his financial position. The first day she was living on the farm with her new husband. She saw him put his arm up a cow to help her give birth, he's definitely hands on.

Bulk shopping from Macro and other bulk shopping shops are available easily..... But we do prefer fresh produce and that you cannot buy in bulk.

On food we have quality, authenticity and regulations to prevent unhealthy chemicals. On hours we want the majority to enjoy quality of life, which means after hours most population should be with their families including weekends and holidays, don't be selfish!. The cost is livable, the rent is monthly, the culture is diverse and authentic.
