Was there the same time, but did no go to Mścichy this year. You made the right choice with this low water level and got some nice results. Last couple of years half of april seems to be the best period to see many Batalions and waterfowl.

Mścichy was the best spot by far this year. As You mentioned critically low water level this year was the biggest factor in that. Best time for ruffs (batalions ;)) is (number wise is indeed mid April)but for photography 3rd-5th May is the best since males are already fighting and in full breeding plumage. For waterfowl indeed mid April is amazing. Thanks so much!!!

Fun fact. Nests of Remizidae (penduline tits) were used by fishermen as their boots / socks during colder months. They just got abandoned nests and put them on their feet :).
