In this video, we dive into 𝙬𝙝𝙮 𝙬𝙚’𝙧𝙚 𝙨𝙥𝙚𝙣𝙙𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙨𝙤 𝙢𝙪𝙘𝙝 𝙢𝙤𝙣𝙚𝙮 𝙤𝙣 𝘼𝙞𝙧𝙗𝙣𝙗 instead of securing long-term leases while living in Mexico. Guy’s if you remember we came down 2 months before you…our plan was much like yours. Travel until we found the right place…being a homebody I needed to know where home base was going to be. We envisioned small towns old school Mexico…ended up with modern large city , modern home in a bubble Zibata.
Travel wears on you, we did it for 7 months but knew at the end where our house would be.
You’re 2 years in and heading for 2 more…hats off to you sticking with it. Once you make a decision it will all be a distant memory enjoy the ride.
Take care
I do remember Casey. Yeah, it does get old, but we have seen so many wonderful things here in Mexico. One thing is that it has taught us how warm the Mexican people really are. Not just in a city or two, but throughout the country. It has been a magical experience and we are looking forward to the 5 cities that we have left to explore before making our decision. Hey, are you thinking of coming up to the meet and greet in San Miguel de Allende on the 25th of this month? Retired Life in Mexico, No BULL, Two Travelers in Mexico, Truly Remarkable Life and ourselves will be there meeting with subscribers. It is from 3 until 6. If you can't make it, we will need to hook up at some point while we are still here in Queretaro.
Love your videos
❤
Thank you so much Guadalupe.
This couple clearly can AFFORD to live where they live. Stop hating just because you can’t afford it.
Thanks.
A good place to check for short term rentals is Facebook groups, as opposed to marketplace. There aren’t a whole bunch of rentals, but if the other sources aren’t working then it’s a place to check. Or other local internet groups. I’ve found good rentals in Mexico this way in the past.
Thanks for the tip! Our problem with that is that we are booking so far in advance. We are already booked for the rest of this year. We like to know that we have a place and once we land in a location, we really don't want to pack up and move again.
Rents have gone CRAZY in Mexico since we first started planning in 2020. They have gone up in the USA as well, but nothing like in popular areas of Mexico. The really weird thing is that the occupancy rates are often VERY low, at least in our area. We have about the same requirements as yourselves (except we have 2 cars!) and Yep, a King bed is a MUST for us as well. That often eliminates 80% or more of the rentals when we search on AirBnB. But, to top it off, add in 3 dogs and we really have a hard time finding rentals.
One thing I would recommend is if their calendar is mostly empty to negotiate the price. Everyone we have approached with this has been amenable to it and a once we even got it for half off the asking price...
Nice tip, thanks. Yeah, when you start to toss in a lot of must have items, the number of units that fit the criteria really drops dramatically and the beds are the number one limiting factor. The rise in the minimum wage here over the last 5 to 6 years has had a big impact on the inflation rate. We were shocked at how empty it was in Tulum while we were there, but the rates were just STUPID! But if they are making money renting 20 to 25% of the time, then I guess it is a winner. Glad that we are out of Riviera Maya though.
You just have a bit of a unique situation. You HAVE to have a secure place for your car. You HAVE to have a private listing because you're working from home. If you didn't need a garage and could rent a room where the host lives there, then you could get it cheaper, of course...but that doens't work for y'all's situation.
Very true, Jenny. Plus, we like the privacy and are going for the entire living in that particular location experience. It is the best way for us to get a feel for whether we like it or not. We do have a lot of unique aspects to this entire event. LOL
@GringosRUs Yes!!!! Very different than just needing a bed to sleep in so you can go explore X and then go home
I understand totally. I did the same thing for 4 years, before settling here in Cozumel at a studio where I first stayed, under Airbnb, 5 years ago.
Thanks JD. It is a great way to find out where you would like to live, but you also pay a premium for that versatility.
Thanks, Gina & Mark, for some great information on short-term rentals. We might be in for a challenge as we are hoping to do 6 months in Canada and 6 months in Mexico. I have heard so many people say 6-month leases are possible in a lot of places, but I'm trusting your info because you are doing it in many cities and have seen what's possible and what's not and are very honest about it. It's a bit of a reality check for me and a bit worrisome. But, it doesn't deter me from trying to live my dream! ¡Que le vaya bien!
6 months is definitely possible but it depends on location and the housing market. If it's an area known to get snowbirds, you will find 6 month leases with little problem. Also, chances are that you won't need a garage or that you will travel with amount of stuff that we have. ~Gina
Every time you give your housing costs, you also remind people of those same facts. If they still ask why you are spending so much when you already explained it in the video, I don't think there's much hope for them. I wonder if they post on people's hotel reviews to question why they spent so much on a few nights in Mexico?
I wonder too if they realize that not everyone is moving to Mexico with budgetary reasons as a major motivator. When we move it will be for the weather, people and culture. We won't be living the rich life, but we also won't be trying to find the cheapest place to live.
Good question Gregg. LOL One never knows. It is amazing how many people just don't pay attention to everything.
Now you can stop answering this question so often. I totally understand your predicament, it's just a shame that nobody wants to give short-term leases. Nice of Annyvette and Arlene! Happy standing still for several months!
Yeah Cindy, there are those that will ask it every time we post a cost of living video. Now I have a video that I can direct them to watch that explains it. We love Annyvette and Arlene's house. We have spent many a night at that bar. LOL And yes, it does feel good to relax for an expanded time frame before we do the final push on our journey.
It will be exciting when you unveil your final choice. A lot of people might follow you, consider how thorough you've been.
It is possible. Hey, we are always looking forward to meeting any of our subscribers when we get the chance. If they were to become neighbors, that would just be even better.
I understand your reasoning and it really makes sense. My question to you: from all the places you have already stayed are there any that you have definitely determined is not in the running at all for retiring in? And if so, can you do a video just on those and the reason why? I really enjoy watching your explorations and I am in the beginning stages of relocating to Mexico as well. I hope to visit in April or May and then again in Oct or Nov. I am still working and it is difficult to get a month off at a time to explore more extensively plus I have to get rid of all my "stuff".
Getting the time can be the tricky part. And you do want to spend enough time in the cities to get a real feel for them. A week is hard to gauge the real vibe of a city. We have thought of doing that as we are going to be trying to come up with different content now that we are here in Queretaro for almost 7 months. Thanks.
Wow, and I thought that I paid to much for paying a 1000 US dollars a month in Guadalajara LOL. And you guys spend 10 K -14 K USD dollars wow.
No, we spend normally between 2 to 3 K for a month. We said that we have seen houses that have been as much as 10 to 14 K per month. Thanks for watching.
Makes perfect sense.
Thanks Rick. We think so. LOL
Doing the same thing. I also need a 2 bed because I travel with my spouse and we both work from home. She's on the phone for her work and I need to silence to focus. We also cook a lot at home, so setting up an office near the kitchen doesn't work.
It's definitely a balancing act when you're trying to find the perfect Airbnb for work and home. When trying to get a unit that accommodates all the necessary needs it can become problematic in finding and expensive as well. But it does pay to be comfortable versus on top of each other 24/7.
I think you guys have a great long term plan. Yes, it costs a bit more in the short term, but you are exploring MX and looking for best places to land. My wife and I arrived in QRO in 2021, rented a house in Carretas for 18 months, and then bought a great house in Centro Jan 2023. I do wish that we had traveled for a year or two first just to see what else was out there.
Thanks Rory. There are times that we aren't sure all the time when we are traveling around because we do get a bit worn down by it all. But all of you buoy us with your support. We do look forward to the end of the journey, but we truly have experienced so much that has enriched our lives. Thanks and we hope to see you sometime while we are here in QRO.
Hopefully you will be closer to making a decision by the end of next year. Your budget will have a breather, but, I think🤔 after all this traveling, wonder if you are going to be able to settle in one place🫣‼️
Trust me Wilfredo, when these four years are complete, the last thing that we will be thinking of doing will be to uproot and go someplace else. LOL It is hard to believe that in about 18 months it will all come to an end. 5 more new cities to check out and then we will drop anchor somewhere.
I have noticed the same criticism on a couple other Mexico videos. It’s like people don’t understand that everybody has a different budget and a different lifestyle. If you’re living one way in the US or Canada, that is a nice lifestyle and makes you comfortable, you’re not gonna move to Mexico and live in a $500 a month home. Plus, some people can afford to live in a much nicer place, so why wouldn’t you? It’s like people watching these videos. Think everyone only has a $500 a month budget for housing. They also seem to think that everybody that’s retired only gets $1200 a month. I know people that get over $3000 a month on Social Security. Should they be living in a $500 a month house too?
Thanks for understanding and stating a very obvious point for us.
Good morning from Texas. Where does Mark get his cigars in Mexico?
I get them primarily from The Black Chazaro factory store. They make a good cigar and are located in the state of Queretaro. We did a video on them after we toured their facility. They are kind enough to work with me and take the cigars to our friends house and our friends ship them to me. We just transfer the money to our friends and they pay them in cash. I have also ordered from Santa Clara Puros online and they also make a very nice stick. Now that we are in Queretaro for 6 months, it is only a 30 minute drive for me to run up to the store and get them myself.
Another reason Airbnb and hotels are more expensive because Mexico put a 17% tax plus the 3 percent sales tax on hotels and Airbnb.
Very true. That also does factor into the whole equation.
Yes. I noticed the price of Airbnbs all jumped when they passed this tax.
@@bruno8437 Any excuse and the price of an Airbnb goes up. LOL
And Now you have a video link to forward common sense rental questions to...
🤔😉🤠✌️
Bahaha, ooops made the comment before finishing video😂👍
We thought the same thing when we made this video. Thanks Tony.
Did somebody say early videos….????
Squirrel!
LOL, Yeah, our early ones are really bad now that we look back at them. I remember a RUclipsr said that when you start out, just do one hundred videos, because it takes that long to get comfortable. They were right. We had good information, just bad delivery. LOL
Yeah, moving around doesn't require for you to have a lease, and it's a BAD idea anyways!! Paying Rent for a place where You are not going to STAY.
Thanks Jennifer. It actually is hard to believe that we are now just 18 months from ending this journey and finally settling down.
@@GringosRUs I am glad that you two took the Time to enjoy this journey together in life, because guess what?? The experiences, those unique moments, the challenges, and the journey is what you take with you when you leave this life.
@@jenniferlorence185 It truly has been a remarkable experience for us. It does prove that it takes two people who are committed to not only the journey, but also each other as you are so dependent upon each other during the whole time. But I wouldn't have changed it for anything Jennifer.
@@GringosRUs indeed!!
@@GringosRUs I'm Glad you feel that way!!
You must be so sick of that question. Maybe you should take it out of the expense wrap up due to the fact that your parameters are so unique.
Winston, your suggestion caused us to actually look at each other and go "Duh!" But then we realized that there are others who may be doing it in a manner similar to ours and they deserve to hear what the costs were. But thanks for making us reanalyze it some.
@GringosRUs although those folks that are doing what you are doing can see their individual Airbnb cost regardless of what your paying.
@@winstonmcgill6667 True, but it might give them a rough idea for that area before they dig into Airbnb listings.
Now i have the answer , why you were over paying Airbnb, always Love your videos ❤
Glad we could clear that up for you Danny. We will be so happy when it is all over and we are able to settle down and just pay a lease rate and not worry about having to pack the car again. Thanks
It's not overpaying if you are paying market rent.
@@ncgirl454 True, but we are always getting comments on here about paying way more than what the leases are going for in that city. We just wanted to clarify for a lot of the new subscribers who haven't looked at our early videos that explain our process. Thanks.
