I was born in 72 ( just turned 48 ) and was blessed to be able to experience ALL the 80's industrial / EBM/ goth / post punk. Still banging it today in the car and home.
VNV Nation is underrated! They are right up there with Depeche Mode!

I saw this tour in Boston and it just made me fall in love with VNV so much more. The music fills you with pure happiness.
I saw VNV Nation in the basement of a pub. Tiny-ass venue, but it was one of the single best "concerts" I've ever seen.
I love the fact he saw the rise of the whole gothic culture in ireland which frankly was very similar to use english too :D

I grew up in the early 80's in a place where you only had the three C's of music: Country, Christian and Classic rock. Growing up around that I never had any interest in music. I got into metal because I was a teenager, but I never really "got music" until a friend of mine gave me a copy of Empires by VNV Nation and I heard Distant for the first time.
That song un-clogged my brain and got me into looking into new kinds of music. It was the first time where I realized that good music is all about how it affects -you- rather than how it affects the people near you who have to hear it on your behalf.
We miss that freedom of creativity in the music industry. it's kind of why the best newmusic is only found on independent publishing sites, like we used to find only the best by searching imports at little hole in the wall stores and at clubs. VNV is totally underrated in it's impact

I was born in '70 and I totally relate to what he was talking about.
'84 born here. Still rocking out to tunes from and inspired by that day.
i am now happy with spotify and festivals for all the gothic music that i listen, Spotify reccomends me new bands :D

Never liked that name 'New Romantics' The blitz club in London (Rusty Egan) first said that, not on,, we were futurists. Great interview Ronan. Spot on discriptions. I'm about the same age as you & felt exactly as you did then with what was happening back then. Still a die hard analogue synth player & haven't stopped collecting old synths. Brill interview Ronan! I used to watch it myself even when I was to young to really understand what I was watching but mom also enjoyed too..
He's just spoken about my life and experiences. I saw Portion Control and Blancmange so many times as support

Anyone with a good understanding of European history can see that the style of the cover artwork of this great artist is done in such a way that hints at a particular era in Germany and Russia.

Saw them in 2005 in Argentina. It was Matter + Form. So long time ago.
In late 78/1980, in the North of England. We were known as futurists. Then it turned shizz mid 1983 when everyone got on the band wagon & into synths, especially digital keyboards, & then shit bands emerged such as "the Thompson twins", "Howard Jones" & nick kershaw. We were futurists until the media went to the blitz club where Rusty Egan refferd to it as "New Romantics". Spoilt it for alot of us die hard futurists :/
