    One of the things I loved about Turning Red was how much of an amazing support group Mei’s friends were. For me, this was by far one of the best portrayals of friendship I’ve seen in an animated film. They truly care for each other, stand up for each other, and they aren’t afraid to be weird with each other, it’s like they’re comfortable with their own cringe and I love that.

    This movie did a lot more for me than Encanto and Luca. This is coming from a 30 year old Latin American man.
    Granted I'm a Torontonian, but tbh outside of a couple small details it really didnt do much for me. Basic geography of the city and a few cultural landmarks; skydome, Daisy Mart, timbits (for breakfast?) and a few diverse cast choices especially for the time period. It could have easily taken place anywhere, unlike say Scott Pilgrim which is a Toronto movie.
    But the whole theme of "friends are some of the most important family in your life." really hit home. Same with the helicopter mom aspect. Past trauma creating present trauma and breaking the cycle.
    Despite being a boy I really related to this cast and genuinely bought their friendship.
    In the last 30 minutes even though I knew all the beats already I couldn't help but cry. Something I really wanted to say and do for Encanto and Luca.
    I just hope this movie is a success and isn't barred from a theatrical release. It kinda erks me that a movie this good is being kinda swept under the rug

    I was socialized female growing up so I related to this a lot. Also related to Mei feeling pressure and wanting to make everyone happy. I cried a lot too. I still hide the Trans (non binary) part of myself from my family and feel disconnected from my family because of it. This is a really lovely movie and its so beautiful and the expressions. Honestly everyone was wrong about this movie, and continue to be. (Really, how do they not get it?) People HAVE to understand that this movie is _supposed_ to be ''cringe''. It's _supposed_ to be goofy. (Long comment incoming!!) The literal purpose of this movie is the following: (as i see it/imo)
    1: A passion project for the director among other people that grew up Asian and with immigrant parents
    2: A way to say to females growing up: "Hey, it's okay to be different and be kinda hairy and taller than everyone else while you grow up. Don't worry about it, it's normal!

    • @Kiss_My_Aspergers
      @Kiss_My_Aspergers Год назад

      My understanding is that there was originally a romance written into the story with Mei and Miri, and then I think with Mei and Tyler or something? But it was eventually dropped altogether. It's heavily hinted that Priya ends up with Goth Chick, and is canonical in the deleted/removed scenes. WoG says Priya is bi and Miriam is straight, and only dresses "kinda butch" cos she's a skater. Not sure about Mei or Abby.

    This movie really hit me hard. Especially the relationship Mei Mei and her mom have.
    Now to me this movie reminds me of how my mom always feared when I had puberty not because of Periods are gross. But because of my mom experiencing trauma at the age of puberty as a child.
    Especially at the end when the mom's seen as she was as a teenager crying over the trauma that happened between her and her mom.
    It reminded me of how me and my mom are. My mom held a lot of blame for how I was. Because I am very hard on myself. And my mom feels guilt for how I see myself despite that not being her fault. She worries it is because of her own trauma.
    I want to show this movie to my mom when I get a chance even though she'll be going "You were like that. And that."

    Ok, 8 months late, but anyway…
    I’m a Mexican-Italian dude and before I watch this video, I wanted to just say this.
    As far as Disney’s recent cultural expansions go, I think Encanto kinda failed, Luca too. Soul was decent, and I kind of liked Raya.
    My favorite for a while was Coco, but (and don’t let my family hear this) Turning Red actually managed to get tears out of me, whereas Coco only ALMOST got me with the final “Remember Me” scene with Mama Coco. And that is only a recent development as I lost my grandfather and Mama Coco’s character style actually reminds me of him.
    Turning Red got me on the final reconciliation though, and on the first try. I guess something about the lack of mother-child relationship being remedied just got to me.
    So yeah, now I’ll watch!
    Edit: Watched! Fantastic video along with your recent Robots one, so I’m subscribing :)

    I know there’s a trope about poc characters in Disney films morphing into animals such as in brother bear, do you think this film handles that trope in a better direction? asking anyone tbh

    • @offbeatkiki
      @offbeatkiki  2 года назад +1

      Yea I do, Mei can elect to turn into a red panda, and there are tons of other Chinese people in the film, so it's not really erasing visibility of POC in the same way that films like Princess and the Frog or Brother Bear do.

    I thought it was a enjoyable movie. Of course it wasn’t targeted at me. But there’s a lot of movies, tv and music that I (a 23 year old African American straight cisgender guy) that weren’t directed at me. It isn’t one of my favorite Pixar movies and a bunch of the jokes didn’t land for me (but then again it’s a teenage girl and while we aren’t all girls, we were all teenagers who had cringe phases in our lives, I know I should did.) but I enjoy it more than Raya, Luca and Enchanto (hot take, I thought they were all just ok. This is what happen to me when I watch too much anime movies and you get spoiled by how great they are and you get underwhelmed by the okness and somewhat mediorcy of most western animated movies with a couple of exceptions like Soul, The Mitchell’s vs the Machine, Klaus and one of my favorite movies of all time, Spider-Man Into the Spider-Verse.) a solid B from me.

    I have said this a few times already on other RUclips channels, but I was unfortunately late to this movie because of a little prejudice of mine. I saw the Disney Plus thumbnail of the four of them doing their little dance in the street and I avoided it for ages because I thought I would hate it. The premise of the movie, her turning into a Red Panda, intrigued me a lot though, and I decided to give it a try and watch it. I have rarely been blown away so much by a movie in my life! I was in awe of how ridiculously good it was. It was charming, yet edgy (for Disney, at any rate) The friendships were disarming and truthful without being saccharine and twee. The pads scene, the embarrassment in the Daisy Mart, and Ming turning up at school to pull a pad out of her handbag were brilliantly classic scenes. The scene that many don't mention, but is SOOOOOO good is the scene in the car after the betrayal. Just sat there, no dialogue, then Ming reaches over and puts her hand on her daughters hand.......God, it's so heartbreaking. A beautiful ending in the bamboo forest near the end which destroys me every time I see it. Every now and then, a movie comes along and changes everything. I think this is certainly one of them.

    I'm a straight black guy and I don't know "queer coding" but it's hard to find a conversation about Mei's friendships without people insisting that she and Miriam are queer coded. I know that Priya danced with another girl and her friends made knowing faces, so I think it was meant to be obvious that she was bisexual, maybe. What do you think about it? I tend to think people are projecting when "coding" comes up. It also feels like stereotyping.

    I never understood the hate for this movie. The cartoon community just has some weird hatred for kid characters. They hate characters like Scrappy Doo, Mei & her friends, Bessie Higgenbottom, Fanboy & Chum Chum, and Steven Universe for being "annoying" or "cringe" yet they love annoying adult characters like Homer Simpson, Spongebob Squarepants, Mr. Turner, Hugh Neutron, and Peter Griffin. They hate Angelica Pickles for being an evil bitch, but these same people love characters like Scar, Gaston, Harley Quinn, The Joker, Thanos, Jafar, Ursula, and Cruella. I honestly don't get it.

    You know maybe I will give this a watch. I saw one scene (I believe it was cut from final production) and it really really seemed xenophobic.
    It showed the MC and her mother taking a photo but the photo booth was Christmas themed. The mother than proceeded to insult western cultural and be a absolute Karen.
    You don't just go to a photo booth and remove everything like that. I understand it's a movie but it still speaks volumes about the character.
    The disrespect to Christmas just... oh lord. You are in a western nation. I believe everyone should be able to find a place for them to express their culture as long as it doesn't dissect other or bring a group down. This scene was deisgned to bring western culture down.
    Imagine if they animated this the other way around. A white lady comes into a Korean, Chinese, Thai, Japanese, whatever photo set while in ankther country. And just has absolute disgust and repulsion on her face and just kicks everything out. That would be canceled. That's unacceptable. There is a double standard. Maybe they relaized this and thats why its not in the film.
    This was deisgned bring down one culture to prop up another.
    I'm proud that Canada has a place for Asians. Many places in Asia are homogenous nations and don't have a place for foreigners and it can be lonely for them. I am proud that there is such a huge culture for forigners in Canada. But then to just insult another culture simply to make a statement to look superior. Just the whole way they animated all the objects and charcters was super disrespectful.
