I agree that those new cages and quick release grips are the way to go, SmallRig knocked it out of the park with the quick release - so much better than the old screw in grips. I took it even further with my work. I added a 4 port USB C hub from Belkin on top in a SmallRig SSD holder, a SmallRig mini V mount to the bottom of the cage with their VB50 battery to power everything though the hub, and them a MagSafe wallet holding a Crucial X10 Pro 4TB SSD through the hub, and finally you can remove the rubber top of the handle to use that cold shoe mount to hold a Holllyland Lark Max. Now I have a rig for my work that is a minimal size, and can run all day. I have set this up on both my iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max. Now, for the older iPhones with a lightening connector I use the new Universal Cage - same basic setup, but add the Apple lightening to USB or multimedia adapter and power it from the VB50, to have the same capability. You can use a power brick instead of the V mount battery. I use the Blackmagic Camera App on all my iPhones and can do multi cam recording with multiple rigs. Also with that App, I automatically get proxies for large files recorded to the SSD. My iPhones have basic storage on board. But it shows what you can do with these phones to meet your requirements.
I was hoping you'd put the lens on the other rig it looks like it wouldn't have much room compared to the brandon li rig with the lens touching the magnet area?
I recently purchased the iPhone 15 Pro Max SmallRig Cage, along with two filters and the Attachable Filter Adapter (M-Mount) 52mm. Unfortunately, I've encountered an issue where the Filter Adapter obscures one of the camera lenses in both mounting positions. This means that I have to reinstall the Filter Adapter every time I want to use all three lenses, which is inconvenient. I've noticed that both the Neewer and Beast Grip cages don't have this problem. Has anyone found a solution?
Great walkthrough of the smallrig options :) I’m really torn between getting the 15 pro max cage and the bigger cage, or both, here is my scenario: I film and publish videos both from my workshop/studio, only 3 so far, but the latest one on how using the dji mic 2 with bluetooth with a smartphone disables internal recording in the mic 2 (not a great look for dji shuving that info under the rug) - but those are filmed in my workshop with mostly a static camera mounted on a tripod. The bigger generic cage would be perfect for that, allowing quick and easy attachment of my camera, having my røde videomic go 2 on the cage permanently, the cage mounted to my tripod, and the dji mic 2 receiver on there semi-permanently - and just plug mic/receiver into the phone. Quick and easy on and off with the phone. My other scenario is filming «on the go» at roller derby sports events, roller discos, skateboarding etc, and for that the tight 15 pro max only cage would be perfect, attaching the handles, run around, using the nd filter, ad a mic or the dji receiver onto it, all that good stuff. But sometimes I would need to use the ND indoors in the studio for certain lighting scenarios where my light is too strong (I built my own keylight/softbox from cardboard and aluminum foil, separate video on that as well) which is not adjustable in strengt, it’s on or off (the channel focus is cheap diy gear for starters like myself). So, my question is this: does the 15 pro max with the signature case attach to the bigger magnetic cage without having to take it off? As in is it possible to have the tight cage on all the time, and attach it to the bigger cage, and use the magnetic nd filter, and nothing gets in the way?
Thanks for the kind words! :) once the iPhone is in one cage, you can't really add another one, also it doesn't make a lot of sense in my opinion. I think the bigger one will probably last longer as you can use that with future phones as well.. I would probably go with that personally. Hope this helps!
@@JulianEisenkirchnerThanks :) My usecase is kinda weird, but my thinking was that having the branding lee case on the phone all the time, as well as having the nd filter magnet option would make it perfect for on the go shooting - and when getting back in the studio/workshop I could just pop it onto the magnet of the larger case, that could be permanently mounted on my tripod with the bigger mic etc permanently attached to it :) but if the branding lee case doesn’t fit into the larger case then it’s a no-go :/ Do smallrig have any other ways of attaching the nd-filter other than having the brandin lee or similar case? Cause the larger generic cage doesn’t support adding the nd filter, and I kinda need that option.
Does the SmallRig iPhone 15 Pro Max cage fits with older iPhone versions like iPhone 12 Pro Max perhaps? I’m having a hard time finding the SmallRig cage for the iPhone 12 Pro Max. Most of them are either out of stock or discontinued.
I just picked up the 15 Pro Max, I had the 14 Pro Max. I'm hoping I can rig my 14 pm rig to work with the 15, but haven't tried yet. I plan on buying the 16 when it's released. That said, the 2nd option that uses magsafe, how secure is that? Just looking at it scared me even with the addon holder. I do photos in the Ocean, mountains leaning down, etc. I'm not sure that would ever give me a comfort level that my phone is hanging by a magnet... lol
@@JulianEisenkirchner would you say the BL Cage is better than the Universal with the quick change handles? Rig would usually have a boom mic and small light.
Now if I wanted to add a lense to the Brandon Li setup, what brands will work? Freewell, Moment, Sandmarc, Beastgrip, Shiftcam? I don't want to spend money on this if an ND filter that comes with the kit is the only thing that can be mounted.
A part from accessories versatility and comfort...In terms of VIDEO STABILITY, better a cage like this smallrig or a gimbal? I'm satisfied with my gimbal stabilization but it forces me to too many compromises (no accessories for payload issues, ripid learning curve, battery etc etc), this cage is interesting but I would like to better understand consequences about in terms of video stabilization. Thank you
@@venisonj4197 in the end I've purchased the cage (I had the gimbal already). Regarding stabilization, there's an important difference, gimbal stabilization is much more smooth. The handheld movement of this cage, if properly handled, it's good as final risult. Regarding comfort and easiness to use, this rig is phenomenal. Much easier than the gimbal and more versatile. I'm happy to having purchased it PS I'm looking to substitute the insta360 flow with a heavier gimbal in order to mount this cage with ssd, filters and lenses...let's see if I find the right one 🤞

The thing is way too tight, and I could barely fit my iPhone 12 or 16 inside, let alone get it back out. I almost damaged my iPhone in the process. That’s how extremely tight it was. Something is definitely wrong here.

Can the universal mounts mount to a gimbal like the RS3 Mini?
sure that's just a 1/4 inch screw

Could you tell me how can I use Dji Mic 2 with Brandon Li’s small rig? Dji adapter is not long enoug. And small rig usb c adapter dosnt work with it😢
hm, good question, you might need to look for a usb-c extension, but that's not a great workflow for sure!

no, just pick a "allrounder" cage that is not made for one specific phone

the Magsafe is pretty safe, as long as you're not shaking it real hard or bumping it against a wall it should work just fine
Very helpful... thanks
glad you liked it!
Hello everyone, can anyone recommend me a mount for Tilta Nucleus Nano 2 on the handle of the holder of this model SmallRig Please .Thanks for advance
Is there a way to use Anamorphic and ND filter at the same time?
there is a way sure!
depends on which anamorphic lens you got
I am looking for a handle with a built-in USB-C hub

no, didn't have any experiences like that

you can even swop out the mount at the back and make any lens work. just not sure if these mounts are included in the package. Probably not!

Any way to make this cage compatible with the Moment T-series Anamorphic 1.55x?
