Kyoto Machiya Hotel - What to Expect if you Stay

  • Kyoto Machiya aka Kyo-Machiya are traditional Japanese wooden townhouses and if you are visiting Kyoto, you may want to considering staying in a Kyo-Machiya. This Japan Guide explores what it is like to stay in an authentic Kyo Machiya and what you can expect in these type of Kyoto hotels. Machiyas are built using a interlocking wooden parts and were popular with Kyoto Merchants before WWII. Since Kyoto was saved from air raids during the war, many of the Machiyas in are still around to this day, but once torn down these Machiyas will likely never be rebuilt. Walking inside, you truly feel like you’re a part of history.
Machiya Hotels are setup similar to what you would expect from a Kyoto Airbnb Room in that the house is separate and all to yourself. You can organize to have house cleaning depending on the owner and in my case there was a washing machine and dryer facilities. This particular complex has 4 machiyas all together perfect for groups and families.
So There are 6 different types of Kyo-Machiya, but this one is a SoNikai, which means it has a high 2nd floor ceiling especially when compared to the tsushi-nikai kyo-machiya with low ceilings.
A garden in the back is another characteristic of a Machiya. Since many machiyas back in the day were side by side with neighbors, having this garden was an important part of the design. The garden allows for more sunlight and air circulation into the house, but it also creates a seamless blend between nature and living space.

Most of the time in the room is spent sleeping. Unless you're filthy rich, would you really love to spend hundreds of dollars for a room just to sleep in? If your priorities are like mine (sightseeing and good eating), then forget the fancy overpriced traditional places and go for an "average room" in an "average business hotel." They're practical and (still) affordable. When the dreaded Olympix come, though, all bets are off. That will be the time to stay FAR away from Japan.

I stopped watching the Warriors-Raptors because this is clearly the better option. Thanks for schooling us on these types of hotels.

What are the main differences between a Machiya and a Ryoken? Is it basically a townhouse vs a room? By the way, love all your videos, we'll be in Japan in about 10 days and a large part of schedule was inspired by your vids!

Like that waaaaay more than traditional hotels. It's a shame they aren't everywhere. That bathtub was gorgeous! Where do you find something like that?
