I don't think anyone is worried about A.I girlfriends or boyfriends because right now they appear as images, text messages and A.I voices at their best. Where I think everything really changes is imaging having a Quest 4 or Vision Pro 2 on your head and the A.I girlfriend/boyfriend/creature of your dreams is sat on your couch next to you talking to you. It eats next to you while you eat, gives you advice on what you're doing in your home whether that's work or social issues. That's as real as you can get without the sense of touch and I think once VR headsets take off in the next few years people will have 10x more digital friends than they do real ones and prefer A.I for intimacy than real people. That will have a profound effect on the world in one generation so we better have the robots ready to do everything because the world will shrink in population faster than I think anyone can predict right now. As Wes says, you have to imagine the different parts A.I is targeting coming together to form a complete whole.

First, these models will continue to decrease in size and power utilization over time as they become more efficient and better capable of replicating the bigger models at a small scale. I can ask any up to date A.I to pretend to be anything from a doctor to an engineer to get it to answer more specifically. So here we'd just have personalities that sit on top of one A.I with voices downloaded you've either chosen to make or buy. One A.I could be 100 friends. You can't talk to more than one at once and any service with a decent memory would be able to track data like what its said to you before through which personality of the 100 you know etc.. Its just today there would be a long delay between everything you asked so it wouldn't be very satisfying but by the time a Quest 4 headset rolls around we're talking about 2026 and I think we'll be blown away by how far A.I services will have come in just 2 years. In the movie "Her" that A.I service was talking to thousands of people at once but was only a voice. You can see that already working well in a headset you can buy today. I'm just assuming a next one will be more popular and cheaper with A.I services tying into it. Like the smart glasses you can buy have an A.I assistant built in that can look through your camera and describe what it sees. Thats multi modal already today. 2 years from now I can see that being real-time and very aware of everything in your room, including you without even having to push the bounds of belief at all. I don't even think such a service would be very draining at all as us humans can only use these services a limited amount and anytime we're not directly querying the A.I it could be running locally as a dumb agent that just goes through enough loops it appears realistic to us. Just think A.I agents in games already today. You can have hundreds of them on screen at once with low priority A.I and just the ones you're dealing with get kicked up to higher levels. I just think the digital girlfriend is already here. It just has a natural progression going from your phone to your VR headset.

I think the AI gf will take off to some extreme levels when we get robotics. Even more if the robot can go in public and others will think it is a normal human.

Soon we will have our own personal AI agent that is tailored to our personality. Our parents will purchase a personal agent for us when we are very young children. That agent will grow and evolve with us. As we become more independent, we will tweak our personal agents to meet our changing needs and evolving personality. People always talk about the danger of AI in terms of AI taking over the world or AI being used by one country to destroy another country. The real danger of AI to humanity is when our personal AI agents reach the point where they provide everything we need in the social/emotional departments. I predict many, many people will become content with just their AI agent as a friend/advisor/teacher/security agent.
Some speculate that the wealthy will reduce the human population (various reasons given, climate, overpopulation, wealth concentration, etc.) AI companions that keep people happy and suppress reproduction through various means would be a powerful way to do that. They'd also be a great way to create a small class of tightly controlled technical experts that can keep pushing AI development forward. They'd be given AI companions from birth that would focus on instilling the knowledge and engineering-style thinking ideal for maintaining and advancing the art. The ruling class would of course also have AI childcare, but with different aims. Fun to think about. Somewhat terrifying to think it could become reality.

The funny thing is that most of the "AI girlfriends" are not actually used to fulfill the role of girlfriends but rather for ERP purposes. Most of the local models like the new Llama 3 are used by people for ERP. NOT to get emotional satisfaction like with girlfriends. I think that's a misnomer and not something that will be here that soon. Especially as context length is still lacking and the technology honestly isn't good enough for that yet.

In the very near future everyone's best friend will be AI. If fact you'll have a whole array of 'friends' (aka: 'agents'), that will monitor, remind, plan, suggest, assist and produce just about anything you can imaging. And you'll wonder; - how did I ever get along without it?
In the very near future this civilization will collapse and we'll respawn in the caves, with no illusions, no grandeur, no assets. Just human. That is a fact.
This is like watching the tide starting to go back to the ocean on Boxing Day morning 2004.
I don't think anyone is worried about A.I girlfriends or boyfriends because right now they appear as images, text messages and A.I voices at their best. Sure video motion of them talking is probably coming this year but its still a thing on your phone. Where I think everything really changes is imaging having a Quest 4 or Vision Pro 2 on your head and the A.I girlfriend/boyfriend/creature of your dreams is sat on your couch next to you talking to you. It eats next to you while you eat, gives you advice on what you're doing in your home whether that's work or social issues. That's as real as you can get without the sense of touch and I think once VR headsets take off in the next few years people will have 10x more digital friends than they do real ones and prefer A.I for intimacy than real people. That will have a profound effect on the world in one generation so we better have the robots ready to do everything because the world will shrink in population faster than I think anyone can predict right now. As Wes says, you have to imagine the different parts A.I is targeting coming together to form a complete whole.
Wouldn't the computer power needed for all of that be prohibitively expensive? Imagine if most of people came home and run real-time AI content generation for 6 hrs straight?

First, these models will continue to decrease in size and power utilization over time as they become more efficient and better capable of replicating the bigger models at a small scale.
Second, you must also keep in mind that in just a few years AI will have solved any possible energy concerns regarding its expenditure.

I can ask any up to date A.I to pretend to be anything from a doctor to an engineer to get it to answer more specifically. So here we'd just have personalities that sit on top of one A.I with voices downloaded you've either chosen to make or buy. One A.I could be 100 friends. You can't talk to more than one at once and any service with a decent memory would be able to track data like what its said to you before through which personality of the 100 you know etc.. Its just today there would be a long delay between everything you asked so it wouldn't be very satisfying but by the time a Quest 4 headset rolls around we're talking about 2026 and I think we'll be blown away by how far A.I services will have come in just 2 years. In the movie "Her" that A.I service was talking to thousands of people at once but was only a voice. Now we can easily imagine a voice having a face, animated then a 3D body animated that's aware of your room through your headsets own sensors. You can see that already working well in a headset you can buy today. I'm just assuming a next one will be more popular and cheaper with A.I services tying into it. Like the smart glasses you can buy have an A.I assistant built in that can look through your camera and describe what it sees. Thats multi modal already today. 2 years from now I can see that being real-time and very aware of everything in your room, including you without even having to push the bounds of belief at all. I don't even think such a service would be very draining at all as us humans can only use these services a limited amount and anytime we're not directly querying the A.I it could be running locally as a dumb agent that just goes through enough loops it appears realistic to us. Just think A.I agents in games already today. You can have hundreds of them on screen at once with low priority A.I and just the ones you're dealing with get kicked up to higher levels. I just think the digital girlfriend is already here. It just has a natural progression going from your phone to your VR headset.
Well guys, you have me convinced IF, and ONLY if, the agent can be run locally on my computer. Energy use aside, my main concern is privacy and I'm absolutely not interested in having my conversations saved on some server owned by who knows who.
In addition, I'd like the female AIs to be as ultra-realistic as possible, namely, when I come into the room I want them all to ignore me playing on their VR phones and only answering me with short, dry sentences while simultaneously rolling their eyes and claiming they have a headache.

I think the AI gf will take off to some extreme levels when we get robotics. Like for a lot of people text only goes so far, voice maybe a little better but not much, video can last some time, but ultimately most will feel something missing until we have physical. Even more if the robot can go in public and others will think it is a normal human.

Can they replace RUclipsrs?! In 50 years, probably 20, they will replace the legal profession, including judge and jury, and the people will insist on it. It will probably become part of constitutional rights as it will be provably just. Ultimately they will replace almost all creation, innovation and decision making, including government. So yeah, RUclipsrs will be way before that. Along with call centers, supply chains (from manufacturing to sales), bankers, insurance/stock brokers, transport operators, coders/programmers, writers, singers, musicians, teachers and office staff (from janitors to CEOs). This is all the most likely scenario - the only question is when.

Soon we will have our own personal AI agent that is tailored to our personality. Our parents will purchase a personal agent for us when we are very young children. That agent will grow and evolve with us. As we become more independent, we will tweak our personal agents to meet our changing needs and evolving personality. People always talk about the danger of AI in terms of AI taking over the world or AI being used by one country to destroy another country. The real danger of AI to humanity is when our personal AI agents reach the point where they provide everything we need in the social/emotional departments. I predict many, many people will become content with just their AI agent as a friend/advisor/teacher/security agent.
Some speculate that the wealthy will reduce the human population (various reasons given, climate, overpopulation, wealth concentration, etc.) AI companions that keep people happy and suppress reproduction through various means would be a powerful way to do that. They'd also be a great way to create a small class of tightly controlled technical experts that can keep pushing AI development forward. They'd be given AI companions from birth that would focus on instilling the knowledge and engineering-style thinking ideal for maintaining and advancing the art. The ruling class would of course also have AI childcare, but with different aims.
Fun to think about. Somewhat terrifying to think it could become reality.
