Davy Jones locker is a metaphor for an ocean abyss, a grave for those who die at sea, ( to be sent to Davy Jones locker) a final resting place for drowned sailors. It is a euphemism for shipwrecks & drownings.
Fun fact: The kiss Elizabeth plants on Jack in order to distract him so she could cuff him to the ship was completely left out of Orlando Bloom's script so that WTF look on his face was a genuine reaction.
Also fun fact: The coming back of Captain Barbossa at the end scene in Tia Dalma's house was also left out of everyone's script, so the surprised look on everyone's face as actor Geoffrey Rush coming down the stair as Captain Barbossa was a genuine reaction.
He was able to play multiple tambourines at once using his tentacles, which was amazing to watch. In an interesting coincidence, the guitar player’s mother had invented Liquid Paper (“Wite-Out”) which they used to cover up the Black Spot and avoid the Kraken at the last minute in each episode of the TV show. It was an interesting plot point that they used in novel ways right up until the bottle was secured in Davy Jones Locker. They were all eaten and the show was cancelled, so the singer went on to kidnap small children and hide them in big hedge mazes, but that’s another story.
Barbosa did actually die at the end of the 1st film, but the monkey nicked some of the treasure out the chest at the end credits scene, so it remained an undead monkey, or became one anyway. Barbosa's soul was fetched back from Davy Jones Locker, or he escaped, I'm not quite sure tbh, but the point is he knows those waters and how to get there, hence why he's the perfect man to lead them and bring back Jack.
Barbossa was never in Davy Jones locker. Tia Dalma resurrected him from the dead. For how he knows the waters and how to get to the world’s end, I don’t know. But Barbossa never went to Davy Jones locker.
The first three Pirates movies were such a great watch in the theaters, i remember how the first one was announced and people just laughed at the fact that a, back than, already old Disney ride would get a movie. But it was a huge hit!
You are so wonderful, Dawn, and your reactions are always very enjoyable, especially the comedies or the ones with some humor. The appearance of Barbosa at the end is one of the greatest character reveals ever, and I never get tired of seeing people's reactions to it 😂
Bootstrap Bill, when we meet him, was only working for Davy Jones for a previously agreed to number of years. It was not until after the game of dice that it was changed to an eternity. If you recall, Davy Jones offered someone to forestall his judgment. Forestalling doesn't mean forever. As the word suggests, it just prolongs the period prior to the actual judgment.
I still think it's kinds dumb that immortal (at the time,, because of the Aztec curse) Bootstrap Bill couldn't get himself free of the cannon they sank him on and swim to shore somewhere instead of asking Davy Jones to take him 😅
"You've only been there a day." I know it seems crazy now, but in those days it took days or weeks or months to reach certain places. You can bet that Jack and the crew had been there for atleast a few days, long enough for one of the fisherman to tell Will that he spoke to a man who saw the Pearl days ago, washed up on a beach.
Davey Jones is best known as a member of the musical group, "The Monkees". People say they monkey around. But don't worry as they are too busy to put anybody down.
I find it hilarious and awesome that Bill Nighy was Davy Jones, as well as Viktor from Underworld, Rufus Scrimgeour from Harry Potter, and Howard Clifford from Pokémon: Detective Pikachu. Quite the interesting career for that guy. The fact that that "I've got a jar of dirt" singing taunt was completely improv'd by Johnny Depp is also hilarious to me.
Your passion with wanting to see a sea monster was so entertaining to watch 😄. Your gasp when you first saw it was so cute. I was also equally fascinated and sickened by it 🥴
Davy Jones' face was an entirely digital creation. The the actor, Bill Nighy, performed live on the set with white dots covering his face to track facial movements in order to create the digital "makeup".
Fun fact! When cpt.Jack Sparrow sings I've gotta jar of dirt, The surprised look on Orlando and Keira's faces are real, because it was totally improvised by Johnny.
When I see this, it reminds me of Johnny Depp visiting childrens Hospitals in costume to give kid a little joy for a few minutes. This wasn't a P.R. thing. A couple friends told me about many years before it came out in the press.
27:27 Fun Fact Jack falling down the stairs and lifting the jar saying, "GOT IT!" was a complete accident. Johnny actually fell n improvised the rest of the scene by singing, "I got a Jar of Dirt." Will and Elizabeth's reactions to the scene r genuine reactions Also, no one in the cast knew Barbosa was returning. The shock on everyones faces was real.
The phrase "Dead Man's Chest" comes from a fictional song in Robert Louis Stephenson's novel "Treasure Island" a book that created many of the popular memes and images of pirates that all know. The song's partial lyrics are : Fifteen men on the dead man's chest- ...Yo-ho-ho, and a bottle of rum! Drink and the devil had done for the rest- ...Yo-ho-ho, and a bottle of rum!
There were two Davy Joneses of note in the 20th century music industry: Davy Jones of the Monkees, and David Jones who had to change his name to David Bowie. Both are dead now, and had really creepy endings: Bowie released an album right as he died called "Blackstar" which was about his battle with cancer, which he lost; and right after Davy Jones died the TV stations were playing the movie "Head" in which Jones performed a song in which he intoned, "The years have passed, and so have I."
Technically speaking is just a saying but is actually Davy Jones Locker its a metaphor (like with a lot of maritime traditions, has a lot of superstitious things) basically its a name to describe the abyss lol.
Tia was played by Naomie Harris, who acts in a true "Queen" level performance. Stunning. Some very good acting here, among all the whack plot twists and fantastic happenings. BUT, you see, lots of Scotsmen out there.
Davy Jones' locker is a metaphor for the ocean's abyss and the final resting place of drowned sailors and travelers. It's a euphemism for drowning or shipwrecks where the sailors' and ships' remains are consigned to the depths of the ocean. Davy Jones' locker is also a name used by sailors to represent the spirit of the sea. One theory is that Jones referred to the biblical Jonah who was swallowed by a whale, and Davy was a corruption of a West Indian word for “devil”.
But also in this case for the purposes of the Pirates of the Caribbean stories, Davy Jones' Locker is actually a place between the world of the living and world of the dead, and Davy Jones is the one who was supposed to ferry lost souls from the living to the dead, but he'd been corrupted and forsaken his purpose, hence why he and all the crew look like fish (Explaining this for Dawn's benefit).
Jonathan Pryce, Keira Knightley's dad, played Sam Lowrey in the fun, interesting, wacky film "Brazil", when he was much younger. A movie you should check out. It also stars Ian Holm, from "The Lord Of The Rings" and Katherine Helmond who starred in the TV show "SOAP". Dawn Marie, I think you would enjoy "Brazil", it is different.
So the entire scene of falling down the stairs and I've got a jar of dirt was unscripted and ad-libbed by Johnny Depp. So all of their faces and reactions are genuine because they had no idea what was going on lol!!😂
People explained Davy Jones in the comments of your reaction to the first movie. As a “real person” he was popularized by these movies. I’m unaware of any depictions of him prior, only talk of his Locker. Jack is dead, but he’s not being left in the kraken. He’s being taken to Davy Jones’ Locker Barbossa did die. The monkey swam to the chest and re-cursed himself. Barbossa’s been revived through other means. Wow, I’ve never seen you be wrong this much. You often guess a lot of things correctly 😂
Davy Jones Locker means the sailor's grave in the sea. Davy Joned means nothing other than the sea devil. Just like the Kracken is a legendary animal that pulled ships down. It is a story that sailors told each other. The Flying Dutchman is also known as a ghost ship. Only its captain was not Davy Jones but Captain Van der Decken. Forced by the devil to seal the seas forever until Judgement Day.
I haven't heard anyone use the phrase "heebie jeebies" in years! Since you're a bit Clint Eastwood fan, a good film for you would be 'Thunderbolt and Lightfoot'. Jeff Bridges is in it as well. A really good crime flick. And while you're at it, a great western with Bridges is 'Hell or High Water'.
Naomi Harris is so beautiful she's almost unrecognizable as Tia Dalma. The make-up team really grunge her up well, and she disappears into an incredible perfomance. For more of Naomi looking and acting normal 😅 - Ninja Assassin, 28 Days Later, and the last 3 Daniel Craig James Bond movies

You are literally the FIRST person I've watched react to this film that got sad when the Kraken got injured. But really, your concern was honestly unnecessary, because in terms of sea monsters from mythology, the Kraken was basically on the same level as a Kaiju/Titan like Godzilla. A warship full of sailors MIGHT be able to drive it away (if they were VERY lucky) but they more than likely wouldn't be able to kill it (of course, with today's naval warships, it would probably be a different story if the Kraken really existed). You would need to be, at minimum, a demigod to be able to truly hurt or kill the Kraken, but really the best option to fight the Kraken is ANOTHER giant sea monster, such as the Leviathan, for example.
Captain Jack Sparrow was ABSOLUTELY the BEST character ever Dawn, you are so right!!!!!!! You can thank Amber Heard for making it so we'll never see him again!!!!!!!
I don't care what anybody says Davy Jones lied and cheated during the dice game. He heard will Turner challenge him to a game when he wasn't in the room. I believe that he knew what the dice were on all three players. It's his ship and let's face it this is magical. His first guess was a lie he said 4 fours and he only had one. When will said eight fives and there was only seven he said welcome to the crew as if he already knew. He went into the game knowing he was going to win and will went into the game knowing that he was going to lose. The only reason why Davy Jones lost was because of Will's dad. His dad was uncertain and was the only one playing the game fair. If I'm right they depicted Davy Jones as evil in every good way possible
Liars Dice is also about betting on what you don't have to draw out your opponent's bid and guess what they have. The one-upmanship of the system leads to either an impossible guess or calling someone's bluff, with no other options.
