Here is a fun speculative story: according to some people talking about ww2 events a certain captain of a german ship that was to move suplies to japan during ww2 was pissed by a fleet commander and so did register as ship name ....gotz von berlichingen ( because the original gotz is credited with a phrase in german that is the equivalent to "kiss my ass").. to give him a hint on how he feels and odds are that mangaka's grandfather was among those present when that ship with that name arived. If he told him about it and he researched name .... could have been part of the inspiration for sure ;)
Griffith is victim, not a villain. His best and only friend betray and leave him drive him to mental breakdown, destroy his dream, life and everything he achieved. His warband abbandoned him and just save their lifes after he got in prison. He had no other option. What he done to Casca and Guts was just a veangence for Guts betreyal.
My guy, Griffith had a trillion options to choose from before doing what he did. If anything he was a victim of his own actions. Depression isn’t justification for sacrificing the only family you have. Like really?

He was literally at his dream by the guts left. all he had to do was not be careless when he went to do the deed with charlotte. but becuase he was despreate and careless he was caught. if the hawks really did "betray" Griffith they would've left midland immediately after they got ambushed by the army of midland, leaving griffith to rot in the tower of rebirth. YOU KNOW WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DID? HUH? They stayed hidden in midland as the number 1 fugitives of the kingdom, planning to bust griffith out and save him, YOU KNOW WHY, BECAUSE THEY WERE LOYAL TO HIM. even guts who went out of his way in his new life to help out and save him. THEY PUT SO MUCH ON THE LINE FOR HIM AND YOU CALL IT BETRAYLE? Griffith never had any noble goals in mind other than securing his own kingdom. Now i understand why he did the things he did. Thats the type of person he really is. Clingy, Controling. Always behind some mask or another, and most of all, manipulative. Nonononono, Griffith is 100% a villain, pal. Maybe during the events of golden age prior to Guts leaving you can argue that maybe, MAYBE he was at best an antihero acting on a childish desire to get his kingdom, but ask yourself this, does he REALLY care for his mercenaries or is it all just lies he tells others to be as charismatic in order to draw them in? Now yes, in his kingdom they would all lead extraordinary lives given their heroics, however that would only be a byproduct of them being the tools Griffith used to climb his way to the top of the metaphorical food chain, chances are once they’re out of his life once his dream was achieved he couldn’t give a single fuck, except for maybe Casca and Guts seeing how close the three are to one another. Calling him a hero after the countless horrendous acts he’s committed from the eclipse onward is a blatant misunderstanding of what he is, a manipulative little devil who threw a temper tantrum when his favorite toy was taken away. Falconia is a kingdom built on LIES, the godhand orchestrated the entire events of millennium empire and conviction before it so that Ganishka, a being bound by the will of causality, would come to power and attempt to conquer midland and potentially the surrounding areas around midland, and gosh golly gumdrops, what happens to all the souls who die during his quest?? They’re sent directly to what I believe is The Idea of Evil, basically the god above the godhand, so no, Griffith is NOT a hero, he did absolutely everything wrong and when it blew up in his face he rampaged harder than Godzilla when he stubs his toe
