No I'm not a "teacher" by trade. However the US Air Force taught me over my 20 year career how to be an instructor. "Tell them what you're going to tell them, tell them, and then tell them what you told them." Break it down as if an alien from another planet just arrived and has no clue what you are talking about, and a little pep talk along the way won't hurt. Thank you for your kind comment. :)
My first embroidery machine was a 2004 Singer Futura. I would turn it on and play with it for 10 or 15 minutes at a time. This was pre-RUclips and there were no classes offered anywhere for my machine. Thankfully, Allbrands had a free embroidery club meeting once a month that helped me tremendously. I remember being so enamored by machine embroidery appliqué and thinking how hard it must be, but it reality, it was just a series of simple steps. You are such a gifted teacher and your videos are invaluable.
Then you learned it the same way I did. Baby step-by-baby step. When it's broken down like that, you realize it's not as hard as it seems. Thanks for the insight. It helps others who are in the same boat as you were. :)
I am excited to do this even though I will be starting late because I will be out of town. I will be watching though. (Wish I could take all my stuff with me). Lol. Thank you for doing the sew along. I believe this will help me with my confidence in using my embroidery machine more often.
Only 9 more "sleeps" til the embroider-along starts! Good tips for beginners and experienced embroiderers. Love Kimberbell and the directions are as clear as can be with photo's too.
Isn’t it interesting how sewing has gone from utilitarian to to this gigantic hobby. I went from garment sewing to quilting and embroidery. I still do some garments but man what a ride it’s been! Another section of life greatly influenced by computing. Keep your needles sharp folks!
This is a much better video than the one I actually purchased from the Kimberbell website. The quality of their video is horrible! Thank you for taking the time to do these.
Hi, Becky! Sooooo excited to be doing this project with you! I’m also doing the coordinating Main Street Celebration bench pillow! You are such a kind, generous, entertaining, knowledgeable instructor! You are so right about your suggestions for novice embroiderers in helping them prep for this-and actually any-machine embroidery project! Kudos!! Tip: I’ve been doing Kimberbell projects since Kim first started her business, and a c couple years ago she started recommending fusible interfacing (Pelion SF 101 is fabulous) behind all appliqué and/or heavily embroidered designs along with a no-show mesh stabilizer. (Of course she now has her own line of stabilizers.) What a huge difference the fusible interfacing + stabilizer make in terms of little to no puckering! (Ask me how I know. Lol) Anyway, for those who do not have access to a local quilt store or a JoAnn’s or Hobby Lobby, you can easily find the Pellon SF 101 on Amazon 😊👍. In fact, I keep several yards on hand all the time because I use so much of it for Kimberbell projects! Hugs and Blessings to you!❤️❤️😘😍
Fabulous advice Cindi! I love how viewers share their own tips and tricks here too. Lots to take in. I love all things Kimberbell. :) Good luck on your pillow!
Hi Becky, I am doing the Vintage Boardwalk quilt and I didn’t know there was quilting pattern for the quilt. I will wait when you will demonstrate on your video how to do that. I am not doing the sew along because I am from Quebec. But I will check your videos because they are so helpful. Thanks again for all your help in embroidery’s and quilting.
Becky thanks for all your work! It takes up a lot of your time! I saw a tip and want to share. I like to check off the pieces I cut in my book also. This gal uses a Frixion pen and when she is done touches the iron too it! Clean book! I'm going to do this. Thanks again!
I know what you mean bout the cost. One way I cut out some of the cost is by using fabric from my stash. But I did buy the embellishment kit and the pattern. I am hoping I don’t mess it up.
You will do GREAT with your own fabrics!!! You did the absolute right way to do it on a budget - get the pattern and the embellishment kit. You'll save a TON by using your own stash. Just use "like" fabrics and it will be beautiful! :)
You got this! Easy peasy my friend. Be sure to open up the little doors in the drop down bed to get your blade and tools out. They are kind of hidden. :) Brother makes you work for it. lol
Girlfriend, I am soooo tech unsavvy. I just bought Embrilliance and Thumbnailer. I will also purchase the background stitches from Kimberbell shortly. I forgot my password for Kimberbell. Ugh! I am on my laptop now. I usually view on these vlogs on my tablet. I will enjoy this once I get started but this is daunting. Thank you for your inspiration for this quilt. I have cut out the fabric except for the border fabrics. Now I need to stabilize the embroidered squares. I hope to be ready to go next Monday, the 26th.
I've done it and it pulls the HnB off the fabric when I do that, which then stays stuck to the mat. Maybe my mat is too sticky? Maybe I'm too sticky and just stuck in my old ways? lol :-D
Bought my Bernina 770qe in Nov. 2019 and haven’t gotten to any classes from the dealer. My embroidery section of my machine hasn’t been out of the Bernina bag it came in soooo. I’m going to watch thanks
Great video! I’ve done several Kimberbell projects, and I learn something new every time. This time, with your help, I will learn how to use Embrilliance and to do background quilting. I ALWAYS use SF101 on my projects. I agree, necessary!!
I love Kimberbell and I wish someone would show how to cut the directional fabric. When you are new to quilting this can be hard to figure out even with their diagram, or at least it is for me that's why I stay away for their quilts.
becky , i have had my embroidery/sewing machine for years , and never ventured very far using it. I will be jumping in this project with you as soon as i'm back from vacation next month . i love how thorough you are, and so full of knowledge, and have alot of insight for beginners. especially for those that are not software savvy . love your videos
I think that the outside stitch box is for placement and a trimming guide at the end. And the inside stitch block is to align the blocks before sewing them together and as a guide to see where to stitch them (just a hair on the inside of that block). Does that make sense?
Yes it does. And that's why I think I'm going to remove mine. The odds of me missing the mark are pretty good and I don't want those stitches to show in the finished block. I'll play with it and see. Thanks for watching!
Becky, will spraying the back of the fabric with heavy starch cause any problems with the fusible backing adhering to the fabric? I've been waiting to get the answer to this, but nobody seems to know. When I get my fusible backing next week I will try it. I wanted to get going on prepping my fabric as soon as possible. I noticed that you did use heavy spray starch on the back of your fabric before you cut your fabric on one of your other quilts you were making. Thanks so much for all of your wonderful advice. Diane
Great video Becky. I thought I was done buying things, well now I have to get the Pop Rulers:) Oh my heavens I will have to redo my sewing room AGAIN to make more room for all of this stuff, either that or take over another room OH JOY. Looking forward to your videos on this. How is the new coach???? Looks beautiful, I really miss ours now.
The new coach is still in make ready. We won't get it for another two weeks. But I sent Keith out to the UPS store yesterday and he came home with a dolly and a dingy - a 2020 (new) Chevy Spark. Good grief! $13k later... lol
HA, $13,000 I guess I will not complain about new rulers !! We hooked up our Explorer to our rig, had the transfer switch installed and put a M&G brake assist in, with the air brakes on the coach it worked great. You will have fun, and figure you cannot take the money with you so you might as well enjoy it HEE HEE HEE now!!!! Cannot wait to see the videos from you traveling, it will be quite fun. Bring back wonderful memories for me.
I need to take my Luminaire in for a physical so I will be getting everything ready while she is gone. What size Cricut Easy Press do you have? I was thinking it would work well when I am fusing woven stabilizer on the fabrics.
Becky, did you put both the fusible woven and the heat and bond on the appliqué pieces or just the heat and bond. I am just getting started. I put fusible woven on all my pieces, but I can take it off of the appliqué pieces if I need to.
isnt the brother luminaire a sewing and embroidery machine ??? just when you said your machine doesnt have a separate embroidery arm ... i was confused hehe
Right. The Luminaire is an all-in-one. There isn't a removable embroidery arm per se. When you remove the embroidery arm, you now have a tiny free arm machine. But you're supposed to have the "embroidery arm" on all the time unless you need a free arm.
@@PowerToolsWithThread thanks becky, but i'm still confused hehe so am i getting this right, ya know how iv got the NV1E which is the british version to the quattro, i have a embroidery arm and the sewing piece for when i want to change it back to a sewing machine ... is the luminaire the same hehe
@@richyjames1378 Sorry. The way I said it was totally confusing. The "embroidery arm" bed section can be removed to create a free arm sewing machine just like the Quattro. However, the machine is designed to leave that piece attached full time. When you press Sewing on the menu, the embroidery arm piece (the part that moves up/down/back/forth) moves itself all the way to the machine's far right side so it's very far out of the way. Really, the only time you would take it off is if you are using the free arm. Unlike the Quattro and most other sewing/embroidery combos, it doesn't come with another piece to create a separate bed of the sewing machine area when not using the embroidery unit.
@@PowerToolsWithThread hey becky, i thought i would watch a couple of unboxings of the luminaire and angela wolf has one she works for brother, she pulled out of the box the little sewing piece like we have on the quattro along with the embroidery arm, thats why i was confused hehe

When the machine starts up and you touch "Sewing", the embroidery arm moves completely out of the way to the machine's far right end. You only take off the entire piece when you need to use the free arm. Otherwise, you leave it on full time. No need to cover it when not in use. :)
