Underground, yet Open and Airy House in Rustic Landscape in Greece

- This house located in a small, secluded rocky cove in Greece is an example of how a modern building can seamlessly blend with the natural environment. To create a sheltered refuge that also takes advantage of the stunning views while being protected from the strong northern winds, the architects decided to drill into the hillside rather than building a set of ground-level spaces.
The result is a unique rectangular grid that produces a three-dimensional "checkerboard" of solids and voids that both accommodate and isolate the rooms of the residence. One diagonally positioned side wall provides the living area with a more open view.
Longitudinal walls of dry stone delimit and protect the interior and exterior spaces. They serve as vertical borders, leading the visitor's gaze to the horizon. In contrast to the walls, the transverse facades are light, made of glass and can be fully opened. The front is open to the east view, while the rear windows frame internal gardens, improving air circulation and letting light into the residence.
The use of front and rear openings for lighting and ventilation, a planted flat roof, adequate insulation, as well as energy-efficient glass panels, adds excellent bioclimatic features to the house. The residence is divided into three levels: bedrooms, living rooms, and a guesthouse. The first two communicate internally, while the guesthouse is independent. A built-in staircase connects the three levels externally and leads to the main entrance, located in the living room loft.
Descending into the interior of the house reveals the initially hidden spaces of the residence, framing a view from two sides: a visual exit to the sea during descent and an exit to the sky during ascent. The buried areas are "negative" spaces resulting from the separation and removal of part of the rock. This rough feeling of a natural cavity was recreated with the choice of materials and color palette, including stone, exposed concrete, wood, and metal, to create rustic internal shells.
Sun protection elements on the facades produce shadow patterns. Paired with large reflective mirror surfaces, they create an interesting atmosphere in the private areas of the residence. These pergolas seem to float detached from the surface, denoting the physical aspect of the house, which integrates with the landscape yet maintains a dynamic presence. The result is a house that is both underground and open, airy, and full of light.

Amazing...never seen anything like this before...
Probably because it doesn't actually exist and is just 3d rendering.
Background music shouldn’t over power the narration!!! Can’t hear any this she is saying.
Thank you for the feedback, suggestions are always welcome 🙏🏼
Good music !

I always admire when houses are incorporated with the land around it!
Please change the music, it is unbearable. Thank you for the video, amazing house. 😊
Simply breathtaking 😍 👌🏾
St-air-way, nice touch
1970’s Earth Shelter idea
needed an architect of this vision.
Good for taking selfies, but as cozy as chilling in plastic raincoat in sunny day in Greece. I think it is exact reason why girl in such raincoat appears in video.
I’m not usually drawn to modern architecture, but this is interesting and aesthetically pleasing enough to actually kind of like it. Not sure I’d want to live there full time, but as a vacation destination, yes. The only thing is that staircase makes me nervous. 😀 My balance would be very challenged. Oh and by the way, could someone please turn down the music a bit? Thanks.
This is an mazing house. But I have to ask why do people who makes these videos always have the background music too loud?
The editing is okay, but in some speakers, when there are multiple guitars playing at the same time, the sound can become too shrill. However, I'm checking it out and considering reposting this house. Thank you for the feedback 🙏
Stunning! It looks like the lair of a Bond villain. But it looks a bit too stark inside.
I guess Greece doesn't have a lot of building codes. A stairway with no railing. A bed on a platform where one side drops off about 4 feet or so. Scary.
I am glad someone else caught those issues as well. I can just see an elderly person or young kids tumbling down or over the side of the stairs since there is nothing to hold on to. Also Greece does get earthquakes, and with nothing to hold on to during one….oh well, sh-t happens!
Incredible. Just a little bit jealous.
Wonderful architecture integrated into the nature....thank you

Astonishing
Stunning property.
It's a beautiful home, but for some reason I feel like living there would feel really lonely and depressing.
Home is where the heart is.
This is because this house is not for living, its for spending holidays. It looks good only on photos. Comon, it even no place where you can leave your pants, except floor :D Shower next to bed, with wet floor everywhere? My guess, toilet somewhere at center of second bedroom?
Great video, however the volume of the music was...to much
I'm thinking of reposting, thank you for the feedback👍

👍Very 🏆 Nice!👍
Fantastic. Architects and interior designers are geniuses (except for the stairs.
This house is so unique, it's like something out of a cinema!🎬
Totally agree about those stairs. My balance isn’t great so those stairs could be challenging.
OK.....Finally found my dream home! A private hide a way for James Bond.
What a nice house it must be nice to have money so u can live that way😊
The house is beautiful, but the music is way too loud.
And repetitive.
❤ it !
Uma das casa mais linda que já vi 😮❤
Indeed! ❤
Seems like a lot of money to spend only to end up with such a narrow view, like in a hotel room. Especially odd as it doesn't look like nearby neighbors are much of a problem. Other than its view, the interior of the guest bedroom gives me prison cell vibes - not that I've ever been in one! Just overall a very claustrophobic feel, I would have utilized some above ground space. But I live for a view and always want to maximize it, this owner probably values privacy much more.
Well, since this house was designed for rental purposes, that was the intention indeed - to create a unique home where staying for a vacation would be an incredible experience, perhaps not meant for permanent living.
Would love to know more about the lighting both natural and artificial.
Why was that person wearing a rain poncho? Beautiful House.
How do people reach this house. If on foot then ok. If by car though, where do they park. Under the crazy hot sun of southern Greece, you definitely need a shaded parking garage or else your car will die very young !
.. thumbs down only for the poor choice of music chose.. you still cant hear the commentator..

This feels overindulgent and built because they could. I dare say this would look better if built smaller and less sharp. It also looks like a property that is not lived in long term. The stairs with no railing is a nice touch. Hope people who visit won´t have one drink too much.
Interesting concept, beautiful design, but I sense an impracticability in the whole project.
Wow! Great design and use of the landscape. Any idea what the pitch of the slope measures?
Exactly 19 degrees. The highest side of the house is exactly 20 meters from the ground level of the lower floor.
Would it still be called a basement if underneath an underground house?
I'll take it.
Wow
Where is the garage for land transportation and a dock for water transportation?
🤔
Dreadful video.. music inappropriate and too loud. Skipping from photo to photo so fast and for no reason made me seasick. I have no idea where anything is in the house
Thank you for the feedback, suggestions are always welcome 🙏🏼
Music is intense haha
looks cute!
why no railings on the stairs though?
Hello! Please note that the absence of handrails is a form of expression in architecture, sometimes used to achieve a more minimalist look.
@@mirageon visually it looks more appealing yes, and considering it's in a deserted area, there would be no building code XD... But for safety reasons?
Even if the chances are very slim that one would slip while gliding graciously downstairs in slowmotion
A protective non-reflective glassfront that would barely be visible atleast
So where do you park the car and keep the trash cans?
A concrete ceiling? very complex, by the looks though there is so much going on construction wise. They must have dug deep first and lay dirt overtop to blend it all in. Using nearby stones? makes it look so cool an ancient too but so modern. music is a bit loud.
That's true, but expansion joints in this case solve the issue very effectively
They have removed a lot of rock and stones I assume and could have created a wall on top on the ground level that protects from the wind and a garden behind it. I like the design however it lacks cosy green outside areas.
👍🏼 I completely agree with you that the house could benefit from some cozy green outside areas, however, the proposal of this project was precisely to keep the surroundings intact so that, from the observer's perspective, the house would be completely hidden in the topography. And yes, rocks were removed because the deepest part of the site is 20 meters deep. Thank you for your comment!
This is what I would call an introvert home, I'm an introvert and would absolutely live here. Penthouses, townhomes, big houses built for entertaining are extrovert homes, they're nice but I wouldn't live in them. Give me a condo, on a low floor, or a small place that most people would consider claustrophobic, a cottage overlooking the ocean or a forest, the less people in my neighbourhood the better too. If I didn't have cats I'd consider living on a schooner or catamaran away from the land for weeks at a time.
As an extrovert, this house is amazingly. The upkeep is next to nothing. No worries when you’re out and about.
@@jasenjahn Introverted homes have very few windows and are often darker, intimate, almost introverted themselves, you don't really notice it until you really stop and look at it.
Extrovert homes are full of windows and light, lots of space, high ceilings, great for big get togethers and family events, they catch your eye as you drive past like there's a spotlight on it wanting attention.
@@ll7868 plenty of nice light in this home.
@@jasenjahn And they're all low to the ground and facing the same direction and the house is partially buried in a hillside and not even recognizable as a house from any directions but out on the water or straight above, it's not crying for attention, just laying low and chill. Unless people are out on the water with binoculars you don't have to worry about anyone watching you walk around in your underwear.
@@ll7868 sorry. You're wrong. There's light from above. The architect strategical placed massive opening from above located in the back that transcends multiple levels. Please look at the drawings at the end.
Bit like a Bunker, but with Windows.
how is rain water dealt with?
I think its lovely, serene but i eonder about security & things wandering in
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Theres an undergroung mall in my small town. You can always feel the pressure of being underground. I find it uncomfortable.
In NCaved, due to the voids of the courtyards, the spaces always have two openings, so the feeling of being enclosed is not really perceived.
wauuu
Stunning! I wonder if run off is a problem when it rains?
It takes a well thought-out drainage project, but nothing too difficult to solve.
Did I miss “solar panels” ?
Si bella...ma mi chiedo...essendo sottoterra quanta umidità trasuda all interno? E in caso di forte pioggia non c è il rischio che l acqua allaghi l interno? In caso di terremoto...la fine del topo è certa...
In the case of earthquakes, being excavated into rocks makes it safer than a house on columns. There is little humidity since it is a coastal region that tends to be drier, with relatively low precipitation and sparse vegetation.
House is amazing but the music is annoying.
Why the loud music??
I don't see any drainage to keep mud from flowing down onto the house when it rains.
There is a small height on the sides and at the top like a guardrail. Unless there was a major landslide...
Music is too loud.. omg.. nice house, tho
I believe that in some parts with multiple guitars playing simultaneously, this happens in some speakers
that could become a target in a shtf scenario (bug out)
Mr. Incredible's house?
Just like being in the city. No parking.
Awesome design! But the music...../:
Interesting house. Had to turn the sound off.
Thank you for the feedback, I am planning to re-edit this house. 💪🏠

smart earthship, just needs wind and solar.
Imagine paying this much for a house and having to walk outside to go from your bedroom to your kitchen.
That's true... nevertheless, it would still be an amazing experience to spend your vacation in this house that is up for rent.
3 things this house needs solar panels and a nice pice of steal as thick as posible acting as a emergency that slides down covering the home like a 2nd roof from that big wave that is coming soon oh and i hope they have access to a well or a borehole for when the shit hits the fan.
at this altitude? Wow!
i wonder how expensive this was to build. their a few improvements i see. 1 stick framing on the inside for raceways for pipes and electric for easier maintenance. other than that i think it looks awesome more houses should be built like this instead of on the good farm land

Some great ideas but . . too Clinical.
MUSIC IS MUCH TOO LOUD. CANNOT HEAR VOICEOVER
Sorry 😔🙏 there was indeed an issue with the audio normalization. In some speakers, when there are multiple guitars playing simultaneously, the sound becomes too shrill
All the spiders 😖
Most real estate channels that use background music have it way to loud and it's generally annoying. I figure that's the way, like the Mandalorians, they have weird rituals and traditions but you gotta do it to stay part of the group. I read comments too, do people really put that much importance into the background music that they'll unsubscribe if they don't like it? That's like people who go to see a movie and walk out because they don't like the soundtrack. "People are strange" - Jim Morrison.
Did you know that you can get The Doors songs in Muzak style (that's elevator music)? That would fit this video, a Muzak version of People Are Strange.
I had other songs selected but this one was the one I found most related to this house 🎶 The volume was drastically lowered during editing, but for some people, it still seems loud. I think it's because of the parts with more than one guitar playing at the same time 🎸🎸
@@mirageon I'm waiting for someone to use Chuck Mangione. I like him. He even guest starred in an episode of King Of The Hill as himself, he was living in the Mega-Low Mart in a house made of toilet paper and the sound system would only play his music. The episode played out like a horror movie, one of the best episodes of the series.
Noted the tip! ✅💡

House is filled with anti-human, razor sharp edges. And the stairs? Don’t get me started. The rest is appealing for its energy efficiency and unobtrusive relationship to the environment.
How can I contact the broker?
Hi. You can contact Mrs. Marika Dimitriadou at barnes-greece.com/property/buy/ncaved-villa-serifos-island/
You can only build this on rock. I've seen many houses that are not square, but L shaped, built in the 70s on hills that all develop serious foundation cracks.
For this house, the back would sink faster than the front, cracking the foundation, but it's build on rock.
Buyer beware, they will sell you those houses with cracked foundations.
Interesting point of view. The soil in this area is indeed quite rocky, but I hadn't thought about the aspect of the load on the back of the house. That's why it's important to use expansion joints, in the case of this house, between the staggered floors.
Insane
Wonderful slideshow of photos, but the music is terrible, almost unbearable and also too loud. Also doesn’t fit the atmosphere of the place.
Thank you for the feedback. I believe that the music may have issues with some speakers in parts where there are multiple guitars playing, causing it to sound too piercing and loud. I appreciate your comment and will avoid using such effects in the future.
