Underground, yet Open and Airy House in Rustic Landscape in Greece

  • This house located in a small, secluded rocky cove in Greece is an example of how a modern building can seamlessly blend with the natural environment. To create a sheltered refuge that also takes advantage of the stunning views while being protected from the strong northern winds, the architects decided to drill into the hillside rather than building a set of ground-level spaces.
The result is a unique rectangular grid that produces a three-dimensional "checkerboard" of solids and voids that both accommodate and isolate the rooms of the residence. One diagonally positioned side wall provides the living area with a more open view.
Longitudinal walls of dry stone delimit and protect the interior and exterior spaces. They serve as vertical borders, leading the visitor's gaze to the horizon. In contrast to the walls, the transverse facades are light, made of glass and can be fully opened. The front is open to the east view, while the rear windows frame internal gardens, improving air circulation and letting light into the residence.
The use of front and rear openings for lighting and ventilation, a planted flat roof, adequate insulation, as well as energy-efficient glass panels, adds excellent bioclimatic features to the house. The residence is divided into three levels: bedrooms, living rooms, and a guesthouse. The first two communicate internally, while the guesthouse is independent. A built-in staircase connects the three levels externally and leads to the main entrance, located in the living room loft.
Descending into the interior of the house reveals the initially hidden spaces of the residence, framing a view from two sides: a visual exit to the sea during descent and an exit to the sky during ascent. The buried areas are "negative" spaces resulting from the separation and removal of part of the rock. This rough feeling of a natural cavity was recreated with the choice of materials and color palette, including stone, exposed concrete, wood, and metal, to create rustic internal shells.
Sun protection elements on the facades produce shadow patterns. Paired with large reflective mirror surfaces, they create an interesting atmosphere in the private areas of the residence. These pergolas seem to float detached from the surface, denoting the physical aspect of the house, which integrates with the landscape yet maintains a dynamic presence. The result is a house that is both underground and open, airy, and full of light.

I’m not usually drawn to modern architecture, but this is interesting and aesthetically pleasing enough to actually kind of like it. Not sure I’d want to live there full time, but as a vacation destination, yes. The only thing is that staircase makes me nervous. 😀 My balance would be very challenged. Oh and by the way, could someone please turn down the music a bit? Thanks.

I am glad someone else caught those issues as well. I can just see an elderly person or young kids tumbling down or over the side of the stairs since there is nothing to hold on to. Also Greece does get earthquakes, and with nothing to hold on to during one….oh well, sh-t happens!

Seems like a lot of money to spend only to end up with such a narrow view, like in a hotel room. Especially odd as it doesn't look like nearby neighbors are much of a problem. Other than its view, the interior of the guest bedroom gives me prison cell vibes - not that I've ever been in one! Just overall a very claustrophobic feel, I would have utilized some above ground space. But I live for a view and always want to maximize it, this owner probably values privacy much more.

This is what I would call an introvert home, I'm an introvert and would absolutely live here. Penthouses, townhomes, big houses built for entertaining are extrovert homes, they're nice but I wouldn't live in them. Give me a condo, on a low floor, or a small place that most people would consider claustrophobic, a cottage overlooking the ocean or a forest, the less people in my neighbourhood the better too. If I didn't have cats I'd consider living on a schooner or catamaran away from the land for weeks at a time.

I figure that's the way, like the Mandalorians, they have weird rituals and traditions but you gotta do it to stay part of the group. I read comments too, do people really put that much importance into the background music that they'll unsubscribe if they don't like it? That's like people who go to see a movie and walk out because they don't like the soundtrack. "People are strange" - Jim Morrison.

Did you know that you can get The Doors songs in Muzak style (that's elevator music)? That would fit this video, a Muzak version of People Are Strange.

I had other songs selected but this one was the one I found most related to this house 🎶 The volume was drastically lowered during editing, but for some people, it still seems loud. I think it's because of the parts with more than one guitar playing at the same time 🎸🎸

@@mirageon I'm waiting for someone to use Chuck Mangione. I like him. He even guest starred in an episode of King Of The Hill as himself, he was living in the Mega-Low Mart in a house made of toilet paper and the sound system would only play his music. The episode played out like a horror movie, one of the best episodes of the series.

House is filled with anti-human, razor sharp edges. And the stairs? Don’t get me started. The rest is appealing for its energy efficiency and unobtrusive relationship to the environment.

You can only build this on rock. I've seen many houses that are not square, but L shaped, built in the 70s on hills that all develop serious foundation cracks.
For this house, the back would sink faster than the front, cracking the foundation, but it's build on rock.
Buyer beware, they will sell you those houses with cracked foundations.

Interesting point of view. The soil in this area is indeed quite rocky, but I hadn't thought about the aspect of the load on the back of the house. That's why it's important to use expansion joints, in the case of this house, between the staggered floors.

Wonderful slideshow of photos, but the music is terrible, almost unbearable and also too loud. Also doesn’t fit the atmosphere of the place.

Thank you for the feedback. I believe that the music may have issues with some speakers in parts where there are multiple guitars playing, causing it to sound too piercing and loud. I appreciate your comment and will avoid using such effects in the future.
