Yeah, they should have a 7 or 8-hour compilation of Siskel and Ebert episodes from the 70s, 80s, and 90s with those old commercials (personally, I find those a whole lot better than what they got on TV today).
What a week at the movies! Tootsie, Sophie's choice, and The Verdict have some of the best performances of all-time in my view. When the worst movie shown is Airplane 2, which is still pretty funny, I mean wow. I miss these line ups.
@@redadamearth There are always going to be great movies, some years better than others. But the great slide into corporate dreck was already well underway by '82.
The Verdict and Tootsie are two of my all-time favorites. I watch them at least once a year and I never get tired of them. Thanks again for posting these it brings back a lot of great memories.
@@gheller2261 I understand. It is a visceral not a logical experience. Hollywood is the last place I go for reality which is why I have no interest in anything historical they do.
That was a good week for the movies especially for acting. Hoffman, Newman , and Streep gave the performance of their careers and for those three that’s really saying something. Klein, Warden and Mason are great in supporting roles too. Streep won the best actress Oscar for Sophie’s Choice and Newman and Hoffman were nominated for Best Actor for Tootsie and the Verdict. Martin Short’s spoof of the scene shown on SCtV is beyond hilarious.
You know- Jessica Lange nearly won both acting Oscars- in the same year. She won the Supporting Actress Oscar for Tootsie- and imagine if she had won the Best Actress Oscar she was nominated for Frances that ended up going to Streep for Sophie’s Choice… that would have been one of the greatest feats in movie history.
She was very deserving in Frances, but I'm still baffled by her winning for Tootsie First off, she was the Lead, but she never did anything I saw deserving of an Oscar Terri Garr was fabulous and was a deserving nominee That's a supporting role, but I still don't get her nomination and win in a movie I consider one of the Greatest
I actually agree with Siskel here, which is rare for me. Sophie's Choice, the novel, is one of the greatest books I've read. It's a masterpiece. The movie rushed it and would have benefitted from a longer running time. An epic, like Siskel says. It could have run 31/2 hours and could have been one of the greatest films ever made. But they rushed the last half. It's a shame.
I agree about the movie. Except for the one scene explaining Sophie’s choice, the movie is forgettable. There’s an episode of Friends where Rachel calls Sophie Choice “okay.” That is exactly how I feel.
You should read the book if you haven't yet. It blows the movie right out of the water (as most books do) -- SO good. I remember being disappointed when I finally watched Sophie's Choice (years after it was released), as the book was one of my favorites ever and the movie just didn't really do it justice, believe it or not.
The main issue, as Dustin Hoffman himself (who won) has always said, is that the entire IDEA of pitting movies or performances against each other, when they're often all great, but in totally different genres and styles, is ridiculous. For example, putting "Dances With Wolves" against "GoodFellas" - both movies are great in their own way, but couldn't be more different. All of the performances that year were great. Watch Hoffman's acceptance speech sometime - he basically says he refuses to believe he was "better" than anyone else nominated, included Newman.
@@redadamearth Yes I’ve heard it, on and on but competition is the American way, even our Indian tribes determined their greatness by how powerful their enemies were. Only communist want everyone to get a trophy making all accomplishments worthless. I totally disagree with Dustin Hoffman as did Frank Sinatra only for different reasons. Paul Newman should have won it because he was much better, in my opinion.
I heard that Jessica Lang received an award for her part in Tootsie. ?????? Why? She was fine in it but Hoffman was the talent and extremely funny as Dorothy Michaels. Great as himself (Michael Dorsey) too. Sidney Pollak, Dabney Coleman and Charles Durning was wonderful! Hoffman should have gotten an award for playing Tootsie.🌸
Gene's wrong... The Verdict is in the class of Anatomy of a Murder and all the best courtroom dramas ever filmed. I think what may even elevate it above others is Newman's performance and what I think for me is the character study and the subtle redemption of a broken man. The film works on both levels equally well.
I agree, he’s definitely wrong. The Verdict is a superior courtroom drama by any metric. But in the same league as Anatomy of a Murder? Oof. I don’t know about that.
Frankly, I think the courtroom scenes are the film's biggest weakness. In fact, when it comes to the actual practice of law and procedure, the script reads as if nobody ever spoke to a lawyer. That it is so sloppy on the law brings the film down a level for me. It was saved by Newman's brilliance and James Mason was always fun to watch.
I heard _The Dark Crystal_ came out the same week as _Tootsie_ but don't see it here. Next week's show doesn't seem to have it either. Did they even review it?
Airplane really didn't need a sequel. Airplane II did what the Airport sequels eventually did: went totally overboard with the gags and really stretched for a frame to put them in. ZAZ were smart to drop THAT cold poisoned potato.
ive snuck to movies tons in the early 2000s. it was so easy if the ticket taker was busy or they didnt have one. you could walk right past everyone go right into a theater, and then even skip to other films after. lol like gene said "i dont care i dont own a theater"
One of their better episodes - what few disagreements they had were well explained and make sense. If they had manaaged to live into the current time, the weekly shows would have to have 5 stinkers and a single good film to mention briefly
What makes Tootsies work is that they actually make Dustin Hoffman look passable as a woman Too often they make men dressed up as women look obviously like men 😏
I heard that " rumor" as well, but I am referring to her in this movie - that we believe that really is Dorothy Michaels, not because of external , but internal
What about Tootsie? Last week we all watched Tootsie on HBO . Isn't HBO scrambled? But what? Seeing as we don't pay for HBO, isn't what we're doing illegal? IMMORAL?!?
At the 15:00 mark, THE VERDICT is a great movie. Paul Newman was so great as a failure trying to redeem himself. My take on these films: AIRPLANE II rates 5/10; TOOTSIE rates 8/10; SOPHIE'S CHOICE rates 9/10; THE VERDICT rates 10/10. Paul Newman deserved to get or at least share the Oscar that went to Dustin Hoffman that year.
Airplane II: The Sequel would've been a remembered movie, if they actually didn't make the first one back in 1980. I will admit I laughed at a few jokes and gags throughout (especially when they run out of coffee), but there were some bad edits and grim jokes I counted, in which I didn't find fascinating. And what's worse, it was very much like the original, but taken to another level, in which made me think most of the movie has lost it's flavor to make people laugh. If you want laughs, fly with Otto and Kareem Abdul-Jabaar (or Roger Murdoch), in the original.
