  • Here we focus on what is arguably the finest of R. Neal Peterson's breeding introductions - the "Susquehanna" cultivar. This variety is the result of decades of work to bring out the best aspects of pawpaw, in a preliminary effort to further domesticate the species (which indigenous peoples began doing long ago). Let's talk a bit about it.

    Would you say that Susquehanna has the most "Moya" flavor? Or is there another variety you've had that stands out?

    • @chrissonntag3968
      @chrissonntag3968 5 месяцев назад

      I’m asking in part because of the other members of that family I’ve had from having grown up and visiting Latin America, that particular flavor is super amazing to me. I buy Guanabana/Graviola or soursop juice at some local Latin stores. If this cultivar resembles those fruit the most, I really want it, but heard tropical treat may have more of what people call the mango flavor that you seem to label as more of a “moya” flavor versus the banana and melon flavors of other cultivars.

    I tried Susquehanna and Tallahatchie in San Diego. The Susquehanna grew well the first year, but never leaved out the second year. The rootstock is doing fine, tho. Tallahatchie is also doing well. Will continue to experiment until I can say with confidence which Peterson paw-paws are good-to-go for San Diego.
    REALLY WOULD LIKE TO TRY Susquehanna, thoi!

    Thanks for all the information.
    I have 6 fruiting trees in my tiny backyard. I grow two trees together and prune them as if they were one so that I get good pollination and a variety of pawpaws. I have Susquehanna. The fruit is large and deep yellow in color (yours seems to be lighter in the center). It has a rich flavor but is bitter at the seed, which is a deal breaker for me. Do you detect this bitterness? I’m thinking that I may need to adjust my soil or that I received a seedling as opposed to the cultivar. Please let me know your thoughts.

      I dont detect any bitterness with Susquehanna. But I have tasted what you describe with one of the KSU varieties. In this video he made a point to discuss the leaves. Susquehanna does in fact have very distinct leaves, as noted by Neal when he applied for a plant patent: "Unlike typical pawpaw, however, the upper surface of the leaf is distinctly rugose. This rugoseness, though not pronounced, is evident in both young and mature leaves, and is a trait unique to ‘Levfiv’ plus a few other progeny from the same mother tree, BEF-53. The petioles are shorter than usual for the species. The branching habit is widely spaced with wide crotch angles normally."
      (Note that Susquehanna is the trademark name, while the patent name is levfiv.) Compare the leaves and crotch angles of the branches to your other 5 trees. Also, did it have a graft union when you purchased it?
      I suspect that one of my trees, a PA Golden purchased in 2012, is mislabeled. It was definitely grafted but I wonder if the scionwood was mixed up with a seedling. It took longer than any other tree to produce and it produces tiny, seedly fruits despite having the best spot, as it was the first one that I planted. It is now 15+ feet tall and I cant see the graft union anymore, but it did have one when I purchased it.

      @@danielsmith336 Thank you for going into such detail describing Susquehanna. I’m really impressed by your knowledge and enthusiasm for the fruit.
      This tree was grafted and exhibit the rugose leaves and the shorter petioles (though not by much). There is definitely greater distance between the branches and the lower branches look as if they are at a 90 degree angle from the trunk. Very different from the other pawpaws. It is planted less than a foot from Shenandoah but I never notices these traits before. I suppose it could still be a seedling of Susquehanna. It is the earliest fruiting with some ripening and falling this year in August in New York City.
      I was going to cut it down because of my limited space but I will let it fruit next year and see if there is any improvement in the bitterness. The other pawpaws that I have seem to be the older release ones. Sunflower, Overleese and Shenandoah were delicious this year (they are mild in my opinion).
      Looking forward to the rest of the series.

    Moya flavour might be associated with high acetogenin content

      Can you provide a source linking moya flavor to varying quantities of acetogenic compounds?
