To answer your questions (in order) : the world junior championship is a U20 hockey tournament that is hosted in different countries/ cities every year. It has existed officially since 1977. It is an international tournament in which Canada, Finland, Sweden, and Czechoslovakia/Czechia, and the United States are generally considered the top teams, Russia has not participated since 2021/22 due to geopolitical issues, but are also a top team. A total of 10 teams play in the tournament, 9 from the previous years' tournament, and a 10th team which gets promoted (usually a smaller hockey country like Kazakhstan).
In Canada, the tournament is part of our Christmas tradition as Canada always plays its' first game on Boxing Day, December 26th. So every time we go to visit family for Christmas, we always watch, very common across the country.
It is important for two primary reasons, the first being national pride (again, especially in Canada where it is part of our identity. The second reason is the massive career benefits for the players who take part in the tournament, as players who do well or exceed expectations will see their draft stock improve (they will be picked earlier in the draft lottery), and for top players, there is almost always competition for who will be picked 1st overall. It's also very good for their development to play in these intense tournaments, as the NHL is another beast altogether.
Also the slapshot is not extinct at all... Not sure why the video you watched said that... Slapshots are extremely common from defensemen, Evan Bouchard has his "Bouchbomb" as fans have called it, because of how hard his slapshot is. It's absolutely not extinct, its just mostly used by defensemen now
They left them off the team because Hockey Canada is a joke of an organization run by awful people who care more about politics than hockey. They had a massive sexual assault scandal with players from a previous world juniors team (bad enough that it ended their NHL careers immediately), where Hockey Canada was caught trying to cover up what had happened and kept everything behind closed doors. They fired some members of the org, but many remain. they have also been focused on implementing "inclusiveness" policies in Canada which have been extremely frustrating to deal with for everyone (you cant even shower naked anymore, and no im not joking). The whole organization needs to be eviscerated and rebuilt from the ground up and this is a sentiment most hockey fans in Canada have.

The world juniors is the U20 world championship tournament it happens every year beginning Dec 26 and ending around Jan 5. 10 countries compete in the tournament for national pride and to be under 20 world champions. Many scouts watch this tournament and many players in the tournament have already been drafted to the NHL.

    1. It's basically a showcase for the different nations' hockey development programs where they run a tournament every year to decide who is the best.
    2. It's important for the players because they get to showcase their skills to the world and, more importantly, to the NHL scouts and get to do so on a very big, international tournament. Performing in this tournament means people will think you are a clutch player and can improve your draft position or position within your current organization if you're already drafted.
    3. These kids can range from 15-20 but, obviously most are towards the upper end of that range unless they're exceptional.

Nobody knows why they left the best players off the team, the GM who constructed that team USA an absolute idiot. Luckily he got fired for the absolutely horrific goon fest he put on for the last 2 years.

4:48 When you get a penalty (foul as you called it) you sit in the penalty box and your team plays with one less player. This is called being short handed and your team is on the penalty kill, while the other team is on a powerplay. Most penalties are minor and last 2 minutes or less if the other team scores. A major penalty is 5 minutes and must be served completely even if the other team scores.

    Minor Penalty - 2:00, Major Penalty - 5:00

And a minor penalty ends when the other team scores. A major penalty lasts the entire 5 minutes no matter how many times they score.
      Major is a big deal.

You know how College Football has a bunch of different Bowl games around Christmas and New Years? I guess this is kind of the hockey equivalent of that. It’s the closest comparison I can think of. It’s a big deal in the hockey world.
It’s Junior hockey, so the players are typically around 18 or 19 years old. It’s all the best amateur players from around the world. Many of the players are drafted, or will be drafted into the NHL. So it’s a showcase of the next generation of players.

the nhl has made it difficult for hockey channels to post any videos and the biggest issue is that they are no longer claiming certain parts of the video and they will claim a video that has content thats from the ohl or any other hockey league this has affected channels like hockey psychology from being able to post their videos but there are a few creators who wont be affected by this like the hockey guy

I don’t see many people comment on the slapshot so I will. It is not extinct but it is certainly used less than in previous decades of NHL hockey. The 90s, 2000s, and 2010s for example had tons of people that would opt for a slapshot from anywhere in the offensive zone. In today’s game you see less slapshots for a few reasons.
    1. Slapshots can telegraph for the goalie where the puck will go a lot easier than a wrist shot or snap shot where you can subtly change the angle of the shot just before releasing. So in that way you can fool more goalies and probably score more consistently on current goalkeepers, who are much improved compared to previous decades. 2. The NHL is getting faster, and this is why you can still see slapshots in the world juniors. In the NHL there is a lot less time and space to windup for a slapshot. Compare to other shooting techniques, a slapshot requires a lot of space and some time to create the backswing. In that time a defender is going to close the distance to you, or have time to get in position to block it, or hit you. You want to get the shot off quickly and slapshots generally won’t let you do that. In the world juniors which is U20 you still have elite young talent and prospects, however, it isn’t as physical and aggressive as the NHL so they can still get slapshots off. The goalies in the world juniors are elite but they also are still developing and aren’t perfect so they can still be fooled by a hard, well placed slapshot.

That was 5 and a game misconduct so the player cannot play for the rest of the game and another player has to sit in the box for 5 minutes, making your bench 2 short for the time.
On top of this while your player is in the box you are 1 short on the ice as well and have to play with 4 skaters for the next 5 minutes.

Oh wow, I did not know the teams have to play with 4 players

The reason you see Slapshots outside of the NHL is that the checking is not as tight as in the NHL.
You just don't have time for a big windup in the NHL where time and ice is taken away quickly. The extra little bit of power you get from it is just not worth it in that league.

for forwards yeah, but NHL defensemen still use the clapper multiple times a game

    • @AskTheBeard

@@lamborghiniperlini1710 not nearly as much as they used to. A lot of D men prefer the wrist shot as you can get almost as much power from it with a much faster release and less tell to the goalie.
      Whippy sticks changed a lot.
