Robin, I don't think there's another nail pro like you. You are so professional and knowledgeable, yet such a sweet, cool person. I'd love to meet you someday. But, hey, we're on opposite ends of the country! (I'm in Florida) So I settle for keeping my eye out for your next new video! Hell, (old)girls like me, that love ya, will watch all you bring to us! Stay safe and healthy, cause I've been to Oregon before! : D (yrs ago) Who knows, right! A girl can dream! Mmwah!
@spphr308 you are welcome! its not that you cant..its that you have to be careful and gentle and really pay attention not to rip up the nail :) but i am so glad i can help you!
this tutorial is for nails with enhancements only. natural nails are filed differently and i am an expert in acrylic overlay. there are other manicurists who make natural nail filing tutorials :) my love to you guys!!!
@belou103 you have NO IDEA how much i have heard this in my life and i promised myself NO NONONONONO acrylic tutorials, just art...but i HAD to post this because it is SO simple and yet it seems to be a lost art???? so, you are welcome girl..*huge hug*
i agree.....each of my clients have their bag of files..i use their old file to soften the sides of the new file....i dull it down and throw the old one away. i do this about every 3 months 6 appointments :D xoxoxo
@whoadangsam yess! i do it on my own nails too..its almost impossible on the little fingers..a tip is to move your file stroking ONLY away from you....but using this angle technique. not pull forward like i would holding the hand. you get the same results without the wierdest feeling :D
@mizsaraj you are so so welcome :) i am making these for girls who want to learn and will pass my name in return.......its fun for me and helping you :) my lovve to you and good luck!!!!! tons more to come!
Great video...when I use to get my nails done they were always sharp so I had to file them down when I got home since it was hard to tell them to fix it when I was there....one of those get in get out type places lol. I so need to take a trip to Oregon...it's only one state over lol
thanks for this info i have always suffered from not having straight nails,,, we dont have really good nail techs thats y i decided to learn by my self but am still searching for a good place to learn Thank you so much
@Yoya100100 i will try! volleyball season is coming up and i think i have a mother whos daughter is in volleyball this year..if so, i certainly will tape it for you :)
Thanks for the tip. Very helpful and I like me nail square too. Looks elegant this way. I want to know if I can find a top coat gel no uv lamp require.
you are THE BEST, love your videos so muuuch and learn a lot from them... please do more videos like this!! what do we have to do for more of this videos??? hehehe *hug*
I know you said not to file natural nails this way. But it's too late I filed them the same way and my nails came out so square and look so pretty. I was more gentle with the motion filing with the file though. This is a cool way to make your nails square I love it thanks for posting this
Hi robin don't knowif you've been asked this question but I would like to know if the way you do the square nails is safe for natural nails? Without and acrylic overlay on them?? Thanks so much for you vids you're amazing!! Love all you do :)
i am not sure i understand this question. its filing a nail to get a certain shape. it is safe. if you are using natural nails, you use a soft file and do this method very lightly and with care. you can be a bit tougher with extensions but, all of it is safe...it is just shaping the end of the nail.
This is such great help. What would you recommend for the best results for growing long and strong nails because I really need helpful hints on how to grow them and the results last. If you could give me any tips it would help alot :)
@robinmosesnailart Robin..do you mean with my hand back of hand facing me and then filing like you did but in just one direction instead of back and forth like did in vid? I would love to see a vid for filing own nails :)
i am only teaching how to make the tip straight here. look at ladynailz or cnd acrylic techniques to get a professional opinion. it is very hard for me to give you an answer and stay only on nail art.....but if its cutting your clients, it is too sharp. as files get softer the number gets larger. 80 means really rough. 100 means slightly smoother. 120 means smoother etc. use a smoother file and less acrylic on sidewalls so you dont have to file too much. less is more! xoxo
I dont know if someone asked this question when you are doing your own nails which way do you turn your hand to get to squared and round nails thank you
@KrissD74 same principle except you file one direction only..you dont scrub....then after you get it perfect...buff the ends softly so nothing 'catches'....i might ammend this and make a file your own nail tutorial but for now, it is the same principle, but one direction!!!! end with buffing!!!!
I thought I was the only one who sat in the manicurist chair and said "I want them so square and sharp I can cut someone!" I like having the option of nail weapons. Love you Robin!
@letoya356 same principle except you file one direction only..you dont scrub....then after you get it perfect...buff the ends softly so nothing 'catches'....i might ammend this and make a file your own nail tutorial but for now, it is the same principle, but one direction!!!! end with buffing!!!!
what do you recommend for shaping nails with uneven nail beds? many of my nails curve sideways and otherways once they grow past the end of my finger, and it takes away from my nail art a lot... suggestions?
i really meant to ask you this exact thing but didn't dare because i thought i was being dumb... thnx a bunch :) i'll try your method.. hopefully i'll finally manage to go from round to square :)
I love your technique! When I do my own nails it always makes me crazy that some look crooked and others look straight based on the way the nail grows in comparison to the finger. I have a question though. I can’t seem to find this answer anywhere so maybe you can help. How do you establish the length of each nail to make the manicure look harmonious? In other words, how do you determine the individual length of each nail? Is there some sort of rule? I read somewhere that the three middle fingers (index, middle, ring) should all be the same length from cuticle to tip, and that the thumb and pinkie should be the same length from cuticle to tip. Have you heard that before?
No. I think it is personal taste. For example, if you work with the public, the law is 1/4inch from free edge. I think using that rule started me being aware. Now i look behind and on top of the nails and adk the client what they feel is best. I always defer to the client. But it really is practice. This technique here with filing is what is most beneficial to learn for sure. It saves tons of time! Good luck and thank you for this amazing comment❤❤❤❤
Perhaps its the side of the file that is cutting them. Rule of thumb were were taught at nail school was for all new files take a orange wood stick (wooden pusher) and rub it all along the sides. Not the surface of the files but the sides. This will help dull the sides of it do it doesnt catch on your clients. They are super sharp when new. If you are looking for a good file LCN, has fantastic files.
Is it safe to file natural nails the way you did the square nails..i was wondering because it goes against what i was taught..and filing back and forth doesnt that make the nails weaker and causes the nail layers to separate on natural nails? sorry i know its a weird question i just want clarity.
I have a question, all of their nails have acrylic on them only right now right? So then your next step would be a regular polish then design with acrylic paints then top coat? am i correct? I can apply acrylic and then polish over them and use a normal top coat?
Hello. Im just seeing your video for rhe first time and your technique is awesome. I like getting my done but hate that I havecti achool the nail tech. Especially on how you teach to file square but round. I tell them to show their hips when they do mine. Make edges slightly round. They file to hard and fast so it takes away the natural alignment of the nail. Your work is fabulous.
Robin sweetie.. I am trying to figure out how to file my own nails like this...the square way...doing it myself on me? How can I do that this way...the way you do it here on myself? They face opposite of me and I can't grip my nail like you did here?
can you do tutorial on how to do acrylic extension too? the shape was really nice! I do my nails too but my nails are small and curve.. I dont know how to explain but when I put acrylic on, even a little amount of it, it makes my nails look so big T-T
I have never seen a video like this one. Loved it

@TearfulShadows yeah I actually am using a cheapo hardener from Sally that is working really well surprisingly.
@robinmosesnailart acrylic overlay... Do you have a video showing us how you do this?
@whoadangsam hold the nailbed TIGHT when you do it...it wont feel weird :D promise :D the tighter the better :D

Hi Robin! is this also how you shape a natural nail too?
thanks this really worked
is it hip to wear your nails in square shape? I like them oval...or round. Very good tutorial Robin!
