  • George Wolfe, an environmental activist, was among the first to paddle a boat down 51 miles of the L.A. River in 2008, when the stunt risked fines and jail time. The trip inspired proposals for turning the concrete-lined channel into a natural and recreational resource. But today there are few visible signs of a transformed waterway.

What a well-done video, LA Times. Thank you for putting some significant resources into such a worthy issue. Wolfe's work and his perspective on it is inspiring.

His aspirations are admirable, but I don't see this being a complete reality due to modern day California politicians. Even if federal funds are invested, there won't be enough support or funding from local government, as this will probably be a low priority for them; though you never know.

True--you never know. Stranger things have happened. And we can see where doing nothing leaves us.

The government restores rivers all over the country where there’s not near as many people to enjoy the fruits of that work yet when it comes to urban rivers they move slow if they make any moves at all it’s such a shame a missed opportunity and a disservice to the residents who have a right to be connected to nature and her abundance

We need to stop damming up rivers and river valleys. Its WRONG.

    1. We have to stop the serious homeless problem. Not just keep building new housing for them.
    2. We have a serious crime problem.
    3. Most of our water & sewer mains are over 100 years old.
I think this is a low priority.

The funding comes from different pots of money. This river project had received federal funding through the army corps of engineers.

People respond to their environment. If you make it a beautiful environment, people feel the beauty. They feel the pride, and thus will be more inclined to be positive, happy, and kind to others; in the long run, helping with the kinds of dysfunctions that ‘screw’ people up.
That kayaker is a true hero! 💪
