Why stop at guns? To get true accountability, it should be a requirement to fully and publicly disclose any and all financial records to hold office. Then implement a system to limit conflict of interests. You want to vote on a gun control bill, but received contributions from a gun lobby? Sorry, no vote for you. You want to vote on a Medicare for all bill, but received donations from pharmaceutical companies? Again, no vote.
In this way, everyone is accountable and no one can use their authority to enrich themselves. Lawyers can't represent two conflicting clients, why are our elected leaders held to a lower standard?

If I want to take one hunting or to the range, I have to inform the police I’m travelling with it and when I am doing so. We have comprehensive gun control here, and we may have to jump through some hoops, but we also don’t have anything near the gun violence the states have. Any other questions? Also. I do remember the final line on the 2nd amendment says "shall not be infringed", any law or rule that limits or restricts is against the constitutional and highly illegal. And in case you dont believe me, the founding fathers made it very clear the 2nd amendment refers to guns being owned and bought by free men and women.
"... God forbid we should ever be twenty years without such a rebellion. The people cannot be all, and always, well informed. The part which is wrong will be discontented, in proportion to the importance of the facts they misconceive. If they remain quiet under such misconceptions, it is lethargy, the forerunner of death to the public liberty. ... And what country can preserve its liberties, if it's rulers are not warned from time to time, that this people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to the facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time, with the blood of patriots and tyrants. It is its natural manure."
      - Thomas Jefferson, Nov. 13, 1787, letter to William S. Smith, see Jefferson On Democracy, 20 (S. Padover ed. 1939).
"I ask, sir, what is the militia? It is the whole people, except for a few public officials."
      - George Mason, 3 Elliot, Debates at 425-426.

I heard about someone in the US selling a semi-automatic at a school fair. That sort of gun gets into the wrong hands and the owners obviously don't want it. My dad kept his gun at first, until some neighborhood kids stole it for an afternoon, then he decided to send it to the buy back. I think it's something that the US could try, but I don't think it will have the impact that it had in Australia, because gun-culture is stronger there, guns are politicized, and too many people are scared. It just felt dishonest to hear people saying that they were confiscated, in Australia when I don't think that's the case. I live in Australia & have several friends in the police. I hope I can help in this discussion.
The 1996 strict gun laws didn't ban any guns, it changed the requirements to hold a licence to own certain types of guns (eg ar-15). Most people didn't qualify under the new rules. Thru no fault of their own they would go from legal gun owners to illegal gun owners overnight. It only seemed fair that legal gun owners be compensated for the rule changes, in effect the government bought back legally purchased guns. Not everyone complied but most did. We have had several gun amnesties since, where people can hand in guns, no questions asked, but no compensation is offered.
The laws also introduced very strict and potentially expensive requirements for storage of guns and ammo. Many people were put off by this extra expense and handed over their guns rather than apply for a licence. A friend of mine stores his guns at the firing range for a small fee. My cousin who is a farmer has build his own armoury.
We have just as many guns in private hands today as before the new laws, but with significantly less people holding gun licences.
      Any other questions?

Our Constitution gives the rights of our governance to US, no one else. The majority of Americans don't want to take away the right to own a hunting rifle or a handgun for protection, what they do want is common sense reform, that's all that it should take to make it happen. 1) No firearm registry is created so information about who owns what gun cannot be used against those people
      2) Performing background checks is easily accessible to the public to make it easy to use and so people will want to use it
      3) Background checks are reasonably fast so as to not cause unnecessary delay
      4) Costs for checks are minimal or free so those with lower income can reasonably access it.
Bans on "assault weapons" is not common sense as it's not based on data. Weapons of this group are used in a very small faction of gun homicides. Thus any ban would barely make any difference at all.
Additional restrictions based on domestic violence history however it's based on data, and will do far more than a ban would. Furthermore, most fun deaths are suicides, so let's improve life in America with things like medicare for all, workers rights, etc.

I don't believe there is any reason for any citizen of the USA to own assault weapons, these weapons are weapons of WAR and their purpose is to take out as many of the enemy as possible, as quick as possible. We don't live in a war torn country, God Willing, we never will. But to take this full circle, if the Continental USA were to come under attack , we do have the strongest military in the world AND if there was a registry of licensed, seasoned gun owners, they could be called upon to assist and be effective against any enemy that attempts a ground assault on our Nation.

Handguns, while good for protection, aren't as easily used as a long arm. Some may find the recoil for handguns hard to control, and they are harder to aim accurately. Long arms of pistol or intermediate caliber have a place for home defense.
While mass shootings do include so called assault weapons, they are still a small fraction of homicides with guns. By banning these, you end up impacting regular people for very little gain. There are millions of these weapons already out there in common use for legal purposes.
And I would say these weapons absolutely have a place in the hands of regular people. There is no current real danger of a ground invasion of a foreign power, but we have police and government who have a history and current track record of abusing people (why were BLM protesting so much). The 2nd amendment serves as a way to help prevent those forces going so far as what's going on in Myanmar right now.
In that case of there was a registry or license required to own, guess who they would try to disarm first? They would know exactly who to target (likely marginalized and disadvantaged people).
While yes, we can't fight a conventional war against our military, I would argue that if it did go that far, I'd rather we be able to fight back in some way than be robbed of adequate tools.

That's my point you admonish drunk drivers or reckless drivers even adjust laws to make the roads safer or the tests harder, but nobody takes the same accountability with gun ownership, every time there is a mass shooting, suicide or accident, it's always a "lone wolf" or "tragic accident" and nothing is ever done to make things safer.

"To preserve liberty, it is essential that the whole body of people always possess arms..."
-Richard Henry Lee, 1788, Member of the First U.S. Senate.

Agreed. And I don’t think the average American wants to take away guns for home protection or target practice. What they really want is to get rid of assault rifles (cuz that’s exactly what they are) and ppl bringing a gun into stores, movie theaters, restaurants, etc. But because our laws are so lax and so easy to obtain, it just feeds into the paranoid mindset of thinking they need an AR-15 to defend themselves or carrying a gun, at all times, everywhere they go. And that’s why this vicious cycle of gun violence will continue if nothing changes.

    • @VampiricByNature
      @VampiricByNature 3 года назад

@@coolcat6303 I didn't know this going into it but the AR in AR-15 doesn't even stand for assault rifle. It stands for ArmaLite. An assault rifle is fully automatic and a military weapon. The guns people own today shoot at a similar pace to a commonly seen TV handgun. Automatics for civilians have been banned since the 30's. An AR-15 isn't more powerful than a rifle that looks more traditionally styled for hunting.
Most of the people I've met who own these have them for hunting or plinking. I've shot them a couple of times but it's very easy to hit a target with a rifle versus a handgun. [Any rifle. A longer barrel is always easier to shoot. Handguns actually require practice.] I think if the AR-style gun gets removed from the market we will simply see a transition to guns that look more "hunting" oriented but will function in much the same way.

      Well...for your consideration
In most of the rest of the world people own firearms
      In America people own weapons...
Who's whole purpose is to threaten other citizens
Back in my pre-internet Uni days I found a sociology study rotting away in the library stacks
      (So....sorry I can't cite it)
Big sample across Canada and the USA
"It's 3am....someone is banging on your front door and yelling"....."WHY?"
In most of Canada and parts of the USA the common answer was coded "pro-social"...."a neighbor must need help...or "someone is warning me of danger"
But....in some areas of the country the answer was "anti-social"...."someone is trying to harm me or steal from me"
And those anti-social ideations correlated closely to high levels of interpersonal conflict and, not surprising...gun violence
So...no it's not JUST about guns
But in a society that is living in fear of the "other"
And when that fear is constantly validated from ALL sides of the political spectrum
(NRA, BLM, Proud Boys, Antifa, Dems, GOP....et al)
Introducing a firearm to that situation of fear is akin to throwing gasoline on a fire
And....sure you could take away the guns
But that would still leave the problem unresolved
You can't just put a clean white dressing over that huge festering abscess and walk away
You've got to get in there and dig that putrid foul rot out
And that's hard nasty, smelly, ugly work

The problem might be poor design of the carpeting or matting used on the steps. In poor lighting a monochromatic stairs cannot give the visual cues that specify where the foot needs to be placed for completely secure footing. If the matting is wet or has been recently wiped, the surface may be shiny and create a form of visual melting of the otherwise observable demarcations of the step edges. This is a frequent cause of a misstep on stairs going upward. President Biden emerged rather sprightly and managed the rest of the stairs just fine. He isn't the first public servant to misstep in public and he won't be the last. An ergonomic evaluation for some safety changes is advised.

      From Mr. Michael J. williamson:
I keep hearing people say they want to regulate guns the way we regulate cars. They don't really mean that, of course. What they mean is they want to make it acceptable to find more ways to intrude on the right to keep and bear arms.
I propose instead, we regulate cars the way we regulate guns. Let's start:
To buy or operate a standard car, one will have to be 18 years old. Under that age, adult supervision will be mandatory. This means the adult must be in the vehicle with the underage driver.
To buy a sports car, you will have to be 21. A "Sports car" will be defined as any combination of any two of the following: 2 doors instead of 4, spoked rims not requiring hubcaps, aerodynamic effects such as spoilers or air dams, a wheelbase under 100 inches, a manual transmission, a curb weight under 3000 lbs, fiberglass or other non-metal construction, or painted logos.
For every purchase, you will have to fill out a questionnaire confirming you're a US citizen, do not use drugs or abuse alcohol, have never had a conviction for alcohol related incidents or reckless driving. Lying on this form will be punishable by 10 years in prison and/or a $10,000 fine.
New cars will only be purchased from Federal Automobile Licensees who must provide fingerprints, proof of character, secure storage for all vehicles, and who must call the Federal Bureau of Motor Vehicles to verify your information before purchase. They may approve or decline or delay the sale. If they decline, you may appeal the decision in writing to a review board. If they delay, it becomes an approval automatically after 10 days. However, the dealer may decline to complete such a sale in case of later problems.
Additionally, the purchase of more than two cars in a given year will require signing an understanding that buying cars in order to resell them without a license is a crime. There is an 11% federal excise tax on all new vehicles, plus any state or local tax.
Federal Automobile Licensees must agree to submit to 24/7/365, unannounced, unscheduled searches of their entire homes, businesses and any relates properties and personal effects to be named later.
Then you will be eligible to take your drivers' license test to determine your eligibility to operate on the street. Rules will vary by state, with some states requiring proof of need to own a vehicle for business purposes, and up to 40 hours of professional education. Also, not all states will accept all licenses. You will need to keep track of this information. Additionally, speed limits will not be posted. It is your responsibility to research the driving laws in each area you wish to travel through. Some communities may not allow out of state vehicles, sports cars, or even any vehicles at all. Violation of these laws will result in confiscation and destruction of your vehicle by crushing.
To have a turbocharger, supercharger (External Engine Compression Devices) or a muffler will require an application to the Federal Bureau of Motor Vehicles. A $2000 tax stamp will be required for these High Performance Vehicles. Your request must also be signed by the local chief law enforcement officer, and you must provide fingerprints. If approved in 10-16 weeks, you will be responsible for keeping your High Performance Vehicle in secure storage, and request permission in writing to take it out of state. You will need to carry this documentation with you. There are 13 states that do not allow possession of High Performance Vehicles. Be sure you are aware of those laws before planning your trips. (But really, what do you need such a vehicle for anyway? Who really needs to drive that fast? You must willingly accept and adhere to the socially accepted idea that you are inherently evil for merely possessing such a fast, high powered automobile.)
Additionally, superchargers and turbochargers must be manufactured before June 1, 1986. They may be sold and refitted by a FAL who also has a Special Occupational Tax license authorizing him to work on these. New superchargers, however, are a violation of federal law, except for use by the police or military, or specific government contractors. Expect to pay $15-$30,000 each for these items. Mufflers will only cost from $250-$1000, plus the $2000 stamp. However, once the muffler is damaged, it must be disposed of by cutting it into three pieces. Failure to do this may result in your family going through the next decade only knowing you in a prison jumpsuit and all your bank accounts seized and never replenished.
Imported sports cars will be prohibited. You may purchase other items from foreign manufacturers, but your automobile is in a special class of prohibition due to its inherently evil and sinister nature. The frames may be imported, cut into three pieces, and reassembled with US made engines and suspensions, as long as 60% of the parts are American. Shortly, though, the Transmission Loophole will be closed. The purpose of allowing imports is for spare parts, not to build more destructive "race vehicles.” Transmissions will have to be US made.
Repairs may only be conducted by a licensed FAL, who will send a truck to retrieve your vehicle. It must be a flatbed type truck, winch/dolly trucks are not allowed, under 10/$10,000 penalty. You may work on your own vehicle, but any repair that exceeds emission or performance standards will be subject to federal criminal charges. And violation of this reasonable regulation could result in not only your imprisonment and the confiscation of your assets but imprisonment of any employee or family member who was insane enough to repair your “race car” for you.
Be aware that an existing HPV may have multiple HP Features. A new HPV will require a license for each feature you wish to add to it-one each for muffler or external engine compression device. And you must request and receive, in writing, permission from the federal, state and local governing authorities prior to making such modifications.
Converting a standard car to a sports car will require payment of a $2000 tax, even if no HP features are added. However, if an FAL/SOT does the conversion on a new frame before the vehicle leaves their premises, it will only be a $50 tax. You will need to carry this documentation in the glove box at all times, the mere failure of which alone can result in an arrest and possible conviction.
There is discussion of closing the Car Dealer Loophole, through which private individuals sell cars to friends without going through an FAL. It is important we have these background checks. Surveys show criminals prefer to buy unlicensed to get around their legal liabilities so they can commit crimes in stolen vehicles, which evidence has proven for many years to be true.
There is also discussion of prohibiting brightly colored vehicles. Vehicles are transportation, not toys, and should not be marketed in a way that suggests they are intended for casual use. It is important that everyone be aware of the dangerous nature of cars.
In the future, we may have to consider large displacement engines (anything over 2.5 liters) and transmissions with more than three speeds as being High Performance Items to be added to the federal registry. There will be a window during which you can register your items for $2000 each, provided you meet the background check. Otherwise, you will have to immediately surrender them to an FAL/SOT to dispose of on your behalf. Operating an unlicensed HPV after this date will result in confiscation and destruction of the vehicle, and the 10/$10,000 punishment.
These laws and regulations are due to drunk drivers, reckless drivers and other criminals. The automobile community should be glad it is allowed to exist at all, given all the deaths and environmental damage caused by these vehicles.
The president said today that he strongly supports your right to own and drive basic, standard vehicles for farm use and carpooling. But he and many other people have made it clear that eventually - maybe this month - we need to cease all manufacturing of such high powered automobiles for the civilian market.
Eventually, we need to move away from the notion that owning and operating a vehicle is a right and entitlement, and limit it to people with a proven, bona fide professional need. There are plenty of trains and buses for normal people. This is how most civilized nations are moving and is not a violation of your right to travel.

Mostly because they were saying that they thought you wanted to hear.
The "gun show loophole" is a myth. If you buy a gun at a gunshow, you have to fill out a 4477 and the dealer has to call the FBI just like everyone else.
More than once during the Clinton years, the FBI's "system was down" conveniently when big gun shows were going on, and they couldn't sell a single gun.

And it’s always been like that! My mom tried to go into a Gun store once to try and look for a Pellet Rifle during COVID-19 shutdowns! She was wearing a mask and gloves. The person outside refused her service.
But when two White boys show up after she returned to her car, the guy immediately let Them in!
