  • RD Burman's Million Dollar Risk
    #RDBurman #BhanuGupta #AmarPrem
During the rehearsal of the song 'Chingari koi bhadke' from the film 'Amar Prem', Pancham da's guitarist 'Bhanu Gupta' played the opening F#m chord with an open G string, a mistake that he regretted immediately. However, Pancham da thought that the discordant sound worked better for the song and insisted that Bhanu da played that chord in exact same way through the entire duration of the song. The note was off, did not belong to the chord and was non-musical in a way but Pancham da took the risk.
The song went on to became one of the biggest hit and Pancham da's risk paid off. This incident has been narrated by Bhanu Da on several occasions and is also documented in RD Burman's biography 'R.D. Burman: The Man the music by Anirudha Bhattacharjee and Balaji Vittal

The reason a seemingly wrong key worked for #RDBurman in Chingari Koi Bhadke is because it becomes a metaphor for the wrong notes that the lyrics of the song suggest in the life of the protagonist played by Rajesh Khanna in Amar Prem. This is the magic of how music can subliminally reflect the theme of the song

In the movie Sholay the song Mehbooba Mehbooba the sound in the begining of the song and also in the middle of the song " Fuu Fuu " is not an instrument but he blewed the empty bottle and the sound of that blowing the empty bottle was used this is also an experiment R.D.Burman made .

Panchamda's Magical Music is out of such creativity. Based on the Story Situation, as you said rightly discordant relationship of the Hero and Heroine, Panchamda must have been so happy to use the discordant sound to reconcile with each other. Bhanu Gupta Saab's accidentally playing such off stroke, created Wonders for this unique Song to remember at all times. As you said perfectly, the moment one listens to this discordant sound, could start murmuring Chingari along with Kishore Kumar. Thanks for this valuable treat Sir 🙏🙏🙏🙏

There were and are so many brilliant composers in the Bollywood music industry. But still, in my personal opinion, Pancham has been the greatest. And it's so much shameful that this absolute genius didn’t have any National Award. Not only he, the another greatest Kishore Kumar had the same fate. Shame! Shame!!

I don’t think Panchamda kept the chord because of the discordant relationship between the main actors in Amar Prem but I like the way you have put it together. The real reason is the fact that Panchamda always created something different and this particular note fitted perfectly with his personality

You have an old world Aakhasvani voice. May God Bless you and keep you healthy always. ❤️❤️👍👍👏👏🙏🙏
The Bhairavi can never be better expressed harmonically then this an F#minor with G(flat 2) both available in the same chord.
The tired index finger of BhanuDa going to a bar less index finger arrangement with the G string missed probably deliberate due to his tired fingers and he was exploring some random sounds and a daring Pancham calling Pack up for lack of inspiration and then he hears this sound.
And you have an immortal song. This is Pancham the great, who is ready to pay to the studio even without recording a song out of it. We all reach to some rare and unique sounds in our guitar journey and we don’t know what to do of it. A pancham knew the sound and its utility. The 80s was unkind to him but Maa Saraswati was kind to him and blessed him profusely.
Long live Pancham Da the genius.

Sir, 1 million 'dollar' is not equal to 10 lakh 'rupees'. I clarified in the video "in a manner of speaking". No one can calculate the actual value so its just colloquial 🙂

This story is a bullshit and has been doing rounds. Adding the note G not in the conventional F# minor scale but in the composition is an accidental note. They are deliberately added. Such notes are often used in songs. RD Burman has done such experiments in many songs - Hamein Tumse Pyar Kitana, Kya yahi Pyar hai to name a few. This happens because the basic compositions of RD Burman were often from Indian ragas that never fitted in conventional major or minor progressions.

@@manoj_agr Boss, I am a musician and a filmmaker, I personally know many musicians. Including Bupinder ji. I had asked long ago Bhupi ji if something like this had happened. He simply laughed and said the same logic. Also you yourself are a musician. Tell me how otherwise without accidentals would you use standard notes and chords in ragas that have varjit notes?

    • @manoj_agr

@@SantanuProductions Bhanu da himself has narrated this incident several times in his interviews and I have read it in RD Burman's biography by Aniruddha Bhattacharjee and Balaji Vittal. Incidental notes are played in passing but this one is being played as a chord. Years ago I sang this song on stage and the guitarist struggled to get this sound. We didn't know then that it was just F#m without the bar finger. This sound could only have been discovered by accident. Anyways, who can know for sure now that most of those people are no more, sadly. Thanks for commenting though. See you around.

I think for the 9th chord you will have to add G# or शुध्द रे whereas we are using कोमल रे so this is not really a 9th. Thanks for the insight though. 👍
