      snow anchors are actually incredibly strong. There's demonstrations of people using twix bars to hold them. Still, I don't know if I'd trust my life with it, but you do feel pretty secure if the anchor is built right.

    Mate you were so bloody close to dying. I've had several of these near death experiences on high angle big lines with "visually good snow", but hidden white ice underneath. I'm very glad that you were able to solve this math problem. As a fellow mountaineer/shredder, I have feedback for you: In the end you describe that the lesson was basically to "pay attention to aspect". While I agree with this detail, I'll also add that down climbing into your route with ice tools and crampons to check conditions is CRITICAL. I've very nearly been killed by these bad ice situations, and now at 36 years old with 20+ years experience, I never drop into a consequential line without climbing down into it first. This is particularly important when your line sets you up above terminal exposure. Death is real buddy. I've lost 12 friends to this game.
    Even with climbing into the line you still get fucked though. This past winter I climbed into a 55 degree headwall and deemed it "edgeable". But as I linked my first few turns, I realized that my edges were not able to break the ice crust. I had a very complex situation of swapping into crampons mid face, and eventually climbed out.
    Be more careful mate! Your RUclips videos are rad. But you being alive and in your community is more rad.

    • @Nikolai_Schirmer
      @Nikolai_Schirmer  3 года назад +4

      Thanks man. That 55 degree headwall sounds really scary.
      For sure there were more lessons than the aspect change.
      From a blog post I’m doing for Norrøna:
      «The problem was that ice of course. I had skied the neighbouring couloir with Merrick Mordal and Emma Sunnefeldt Nyberg just a few days earlier. In prime conditions. What I hadn’t paid sufficient mind to was the fact that this couloir was a tiny bit more east facing, with a smaller rock wall protecting it from the elements, so the wind had worn the snow away leaving only a thick ice crust with a deceiving dusting of fresh snow. Even more deceiving as the flat peak we dropped in from had a thick blanket of good snow.
      (...)
      I could’ve roped up and lowered myself onto the slope, to check that the snow was good. I could’ve stopped and climbed back up once I had my ice axe in hand, or at that point asked for a rope from my partner. And I could’ve kicked off both skis immediately after I lost my grip on them.»

      @@Nikolai_Schirmer Hey I just reread my comment. In no way did I intend to sound condescending! I really love your videos! You guys get after some highly creative, highly awesome objectives! Your clip here just really hit home for me. Actually kinda shook me up a little! I think for people who've had these close calls have a more visceral emotional response. Two other situations that stick out for me:
      I once rode into the NW Couloir on Mt. Shuksan in the North Cascades (Washington State). The upper route was creamy sun-effected pow and highly rippable. As I dove into the main fall line, the slope became convex, making it impossible to really see the details of the conditions below. As I dropped over the roll it changed to bulletproof glacier ice on a 50 degree wall. I got stuck on my heelside edge above a 3,000 foot potential fall. Ended up using and ice screw and "scootching" out to safety on a small shoulder.
      The other situation was on the Mowich Face on Mount Rainier. We front pointed half the night and into the morning climbing a 5,000 foot face that cruxed out at ~55-60 at the very top. When it came time to drop in, we thought that things had softened enough to be safe. That wasn't the case. It was an inch of corn-slush on blue fucking glacier ice. We made it down, BARELY. There were several turns up there that were very nearly fatal for me. I actually had to swap to crampons twice to downclimb sections that were not edgeable. I learned what my true limits of risk tolerance are that day, and I'll never push that hard again. If I'm too gripped to ride it cleanly, I know I'm pushing too hard! LOL
      Anyway bud, I really appreciate your videos and the vibe you bring to the ski community. Keep it up and stay safe brother!!

      I realize that’s a bit confusing. It’s edited a bit quicker than real time, but I should’ve given it more space I guess, given all the comments. @@Nikolai_Schirmer Why did you edit out the most important part of the video, how you did a self arrest. You went from falling to being arrested and plunging an axe to setup a temporary anchor. You skipped over the self arrest and getting the axe from your bag. I fear that this gives viewers the impression that this one handed ice axe plunge is a real method for arresting a fall. For anyone interested, it is not and in this case and most cases it would have not worked at all.

  • @SoulFullParrot
    @SoulFullParrot 3 года назад +33

    did you attach your ice axe to backpack? for me, the editing at 3:23 looks like your fall was catched by the ice axe, but your entrance in the couloir is skied with both poles in your hand and no sign of the ice axe near. this leads me to the question what happened between the fall and the catch with the ice axe..?

    • @ChangPeng
      @ChangPeng 3 года назад +6

      I think the skis caught a tiny edge in ice and stopped, and then he grabbed the axe which was strapped outside the pack and plunged it in for anchor (as opposed to self-arrest position if he were to arrest the fall with the axe). Then either the edge broke, or he moved slightly and didn't have the momentum to re-cut into the snow-ice. Not as dramatic as shown in the edit, but pretty epic anyway :)

    • @filda2005
      @filda2005 3 года назад +3

      its cutted. Blocked by skis vs rock/ice. And when "comfortable he pullz out axe. Mind the poles gone from both hand to one hand with dron view.

    • @SoulFullParrot
      @SoulFullParrot 3 года назад +9

      @@filda2005 that's for sure! i question why he is not showing all the footage of this crucial situation. in this situation, it looks difficult to hold balance while pulling out the ice axe (if you have no quick access by arresting it between your backpack and your back). even with the ice axe (which was for sure the best hold in this situation) he was pushing for a second (worse) hold with the poles because he felt not safe. so i can't imagine how he could hold balance and pull of the backpack for grabbing the axe. so is he dramatising the situation (and felt very comfortable) or was he even in bigger trouble than it looks? or what happened in between? i can not imagine that it was not that spectacular to show in the video...

      Yurii Kyrychynskyi the original plan was to jump, if the snow had been good. Then we decided to check it out more closely, to see if we had to use a rope, and then I realized it was all ice🤷‍♂️

    And on top of that he is using an adze less ski mo racing axe in the mountains on a real mission.
    The whole point of an adze is to chop a platform in ice conditions when crampons would take too long or are inaccessible...aka almost the very situation he finds himself in

    One lesson here is be aware of "social factors" and resist from impressing your friends. Could you have had a more conservative entrance to the couloir without an audience? Still, amazing work!
