bring back dieter sometime for an interview
they can’t
@@mark-2233 but why? which party wouldn't want to? would google not allow it?
@@jamiesray The disclosures would be the entire Vergecast
Bring back Paul!
I think an episode of Decoder with Dieter might be a better idea, but then as someone said the whole episode would have been disclosures
The flagship podcast for proactive disclosures
The flagship podcast of live bloggers at WWDC. It’s always great to tune in.
The feature of turning picture into text in notes or a simple sketch is actually great for students taking notes that are more of visual learners also. We’ll be able to take notes in class and add whatever picture might go with it for studying purposes.
How is having a made up picture, which you can’t source, useful alongside your (presumably) factual notes
@@bytez2000 all depends on what you’re trying to do but I’m pretty sure if you were paying attention, it showed a landmark or something where if you’re studying history, a picture generated by AI would look way cleaner then if you were trying to sketch it yourself.
@@bytez2000 Why should anyone care about source when taking notes? Unless you try to publish your notes lol. This feature is indeed useful for a lot of visual learners.
Continually surprised that David is SHOCKED people use their phones and apps differently than him. David, your experiences are not universal!

Sorry but this needs saying. Whenever someone says "I don't want to pay" as Allison said I'm reminded of what my parents taught me. "You get what you pay for". You get what you put in". And "You reap what you sow". All basically the same. People want quality features and safety for free. Just look at what social media has done with that mindset. Ads and button pushing algorithms.
Exactly
furiously yelled WINDOWS PHONE as Apple was doing their presentation
Was Windows Phone just a dream?
"Type to Siri" has been an accessibility option in iOS since 2017
I use it all the time.
I had no idea omg, gonna enable that rn
I totally helped shoot a commercial at this same house. So funny to see Vergecast being hosted from there.
The best feature of iPadOS was the ability to remotely control the other user's screen during FaceTime.
The Verge, you need to include chapters in your uploads on RUclips at least. All other tech podcast adhere to this and a tech publication should too.
There are chapters
They do.
Rookies…
Normally they do but they probably wanted to get this uploaded as soon as they could.
Look in the description
The way Nilie’s shot is set up with a super long lens and super deep depth of field and him being in shadow makes it look like he’s on a zoom background of a table and chair.
Watching Nilay throughout the years.... you have gone from being a level 8 Metapod to a level 90 Shiny Gyarados
They didn't talk much about the design of the iOS 18 much because that's what they talk about when the iPhone 16 Pro drops and all that will feel like it's exclusive to that phone only.
Have I missed something or is Vision Pro, their newest product line and "next big thing", not getting any of the Apple Intelligence stuff?
my guess is they slowly start implementing some of it overtime but didn't want to risk any of it at launch of Apple intelligence
Doesn't seem like it. The product is DOA anyway. It's hella niche.
@@brandonreed09no. It’s not DOA. I know a number of companies that are using it. A friend here, has a cousin in France who had him buy one for her company as it’s becoming very popular in companies for demos. Actually, I’ve used a number of very expensive industrial AR/VR helmets. They’re good, but not as good as the /Vision Pro. They also cost twice that, are often required to connect to a special computer. Those users are very excited about the Vision Pro. Remember that it’s the Vision PRO. Not really a general consumer device.
@@brandonreed09VR and AR are niche
With the Apple Watch updates it blows my mind how people are willing to tolerate basic features like rest days or performance metrics not being on the platform for so long when it's the bread and butter of other fitness watches.
I don’t think you understand what the idiom bread and butter means
David: “this is just the price of doing business in apples…”
*shakes head*
Another example along the same lines as Photoshop: if you try and photocopy a dollar bill most printers won't do it!
An extremely minor thing I find interesting: In the WWDC presentation of the ChatGPT popup when using Siri, the words "Chat GPT" have their own animation separate from "Would you like to use" as the sentence loads in. Might be overthinking, but could mean that if they want, Apple could change what LLM they actually work with in say, countries that ban Open AI or whatever
edit: oh, durr, they literally say "we also plan to add other AI models"
Will the head shaking work with one AirPod or do you need to have both in your ears?
Interesting question. I would imagine a single AirPod would work because all it’s doing is looking at the gyroscope/accelerometer feed, which could still determine if the AirPod is nodding vs shaking without the other
I would have loved when they showed the snap to space window in MacOS that they said also available on iPadOS.
Alex, my fellow Space Cowboy, where did you get your hat from?
Snap a picture of it and use Google search for shopping
1:38:28 pixel recorder? whats that? thanks in advance
if you dont like AP News notification, why not disable notifications for that app?
They are media people. They still need to see it. They just don't want it on their computer
Is Nilay truly in that fancy house?? Are those chairs behind him absolutely enormous????????
Lens distortion. probably a telephoto, 70-200.
I didn’t expect 1670 shoutout, it was such a blast for a few weeks all Poland talked only about it
40:00 In Stable Diffusion, there are tools to inject faces into generated images without training, even with only with one picture. The best is probably InstantID. So no need to train.
The new calculator app on iPad will be amazing for students!!! We still have to preform calculations like the ones in the demo and it would be great to check work with
Calendar app or Calculator? Or did you mean both but for different reasons?
Im newish to the verge, david and alex were talking about liveblogging the wwdc stream but where? i couldnt find it
I think they did iPhone mirroring partly because of Vision Pro.
Why specifically do you think this? Because it isn’t like you can look at your iPhone with your Vision Pro? Only with your laptop
I have never understood people complaining about their own device having too many notifications. You can turn them off? 🤷🏻♂️ if only the app notifications that are turned on show up on your mac, they are useful.
Glad someone said it!
such a fun fun episode, keep it up guys and looking forward to your friday episode^
I saw your live blog, but why isn't the Federighi interview available anywhere?
Likely will be published on Justine’s channel at some point
I think the limiting factor on the phones (as well as some architectural things like NPU, and GPU facilities) is the amount of memory needed to run their model architecture. 15s have 6GBs, 15 Pros have at least 8GBs. All the phones (and other devices) are doing SOME AI, but the new features will require more memory.
Hi, not sure if someone comment, camera nerd here. The new canon 3D lens it's on the R7 because it's for APS-C sensors, so it's not really for one camera, it's more like the flagship APS-C is the R7. They also have a 3D lens for a full frame sensor from a few years back, that works for the rest of the cameras
Oh man I sooooo agree with David on that the gmail app is soooo bad, i really avoid ir
Just wanna point out that as soon as I opened the new photos app it prompted me to look at a “memory” that was just like an hour an and a half of videos that I took capturing my ex roommate being violent and abusive to me. Thx Apple
I believe that in future Apple is planning to just give all the features of AI to all devices because if there are some models than run locally how is apple going to upgrade that model in future? Let’s say they make a model which can produce photorealistic images locally now they cannot give that model locally to older iPhones but they can do it trough Private cloud compute, so I feel apple has just introduced to us this extremely complex proprietary cloud system saying us that “hey this is as secure as running locally and we are trying to make it even better” so I guess their aim is to just do everything in cloud in the future to get to more people and introduce more pro features as a subscription, because apple specifically mention that the current AI features will be “free” indicating that have plans to add a subscription fee
I use primarily use Safari across all of my devices. I use Firefox and Chrome for certain things though.

Assassin creed Mirage came out last October. And Shadows is coming out in November this year. 😊
When you’ve added a door where there used to just be a wall, it doesn’t matter what technical controls you implement, you still have a higher inherent risk than before and way more overhead required to be able to use that new door as securely as possible. Attempting to argue that data is *just* as secure as it never leaving the device is ridiculous marketing.
The flagship podcast of sleak houses that smell like tacos.
1:20:57 LOL AC mirage is from early this year (he could have known because it was announced last year at apple event too along side RE who stole the headlines lol), they also have lies of P, witch is one of my favorite games of last year
Nothing hit as hard as when Tommy came back as the white ranger - Nilay Patel
Are y'all in an Eichler house????
35:31 Older phones have lesser RAM. Specifically iPhone 15 and below have 6 GB RAM or less. 15 Pro is the only phone with 8 GB. And local models require huge amount of memory. This is why, not to sell new phones.
I had expected Verge to get this but alas.
"Morphing" in Mighty Morphing Power Rangers is actually a deverbal adjective I think.

Could have mentioned Gentler Streak being sherlocked hard in the WatchOS discussion.
Well, that’s assuming that they knew what gentler streak is. Which I have no clue about it never heard about.
Steve and Ivy right?... f and I used to like these guys. but it still took apple 18 years to get to this point with the costumazition, and it's not even close to android yet...
Aren’t other open source models censored?
Yeah, I was going to say. Censorship is usually baked into open source LLMs like Llama and Mistral and people have to either further train the models to disable the censorship or at least reduce it, or use other strategies to make the model do what it refuses to do, such as prompt engineering.
Open source image models like base Stable Diffusion don't refuse but they are often simply incapable of doing graphic stuff and people have to further train them to let the model learn about those topics.
And I'm talking about running these models locally and offline. Open source models will totally stop you.
1:07:28 things I feel iPad is missing a better way to use the camera like you can’t stream properly when using the iPad.
I absolutely love Alex’s look. K bye❤
No mention of Animorphs!?
Blackmagic was mentioned...aren't they making a camera that shoots Vision Pro content?
Was this episode of Vergecast shot on iPhone?
Shot on Xperia III. Edited on Samsung Dex.
If they make all the computation on device, Apple can keep selling upgraded devices to process more complex computations.
I absolutely love The Verge and I watch this podcast regularly but I've realized we are a hard-to-please society...we're not impressed by anything anymore. It's so sad because I watched the Apple presentation live and was blown away and excited and then I watched this and it's snarky joke after snarky joke. We don't like movies anymore, music anymore, restaurants, video games etc...we are a complaining society.
Most definitely. But I rather have critical, untrusting journalists than people who don’t do any actual work besides just promoting the companies (iJustine, WhosetheBoss?, etc)
100%
You’re complaining in a post about not liking complaining. Idk, just say you didn’t like their commentary
Paul and Josh Reunion episode?
What is the link for the white paper?
the iPhone will do all of the iPad calculator stuff. FYI ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
14:11 great that we have secured private compute but along with a BitTorrent distributed computing for off grid , even better. So close Apple
Nah man, they want the data to keep training and feeding the AI. On device is a concession to privacy.

1:41:52 ever heard of email filters? They've been a thing for a looooong time 😂
So much more work though
1:18:58 spirit animal
There'll be more third party AI models on the iPhone just as there are many apps today on the App Store. They are building the next AI store, and ChatGPT is the first on it. I bet they are getting their "30 percent tax" from Open AI even if they're paying them.
Free the butts!
Apple doesn’t like you enough to use their studio now?
Honestly it felt weird doing the show there with a bunch of Apple staffers looking at us!
@@reckless1280 Gotcha, so it was your choice? Just want to make sure Apple isn’t trying to punish media outlets
Yep our choice, everyone was friendly about it and they understood why
bring back Beef or Bust
Re the difference between the M1 and the A14 it’s based on: it’s the RAM.
On device AI is limited to every Apple Silicon device with at least 8gb of RAM
"siri should know you habve a daughter". this is exaclty like humane ai pin pitch lol
Except that being a part of your phone, Siri actually can
thank u, what i need ryt now
just to stay relevant they say they will do everything eventually and everyone starts drooling but nobody knows just how far away.
Let's not forget that they jumped out of a plane to tell us what's new
ugh thank god, finally
Don't worry Nilay, Genmoji has your back for blood tears
just wait for iOS 19 and iPhone 17
apple gets the ability to see all the queries that people send to chatgpt, and they can decide the ones they will decide to start supporting.
No, the point Apple made is that they won’t see them.
Do people really archive emails 😭😭
the private cloud model might be running a cloud version of gpt-o, that might be the "deal" apple made with OpenAi
Animorphs!!
Three great editors, all wearing Apple stuff, all three having a late macbook on their laps - complaining about apple emojis! I still love the vergecast sice Josh Topolsky and Nilay started it.
it's healthy to give up on the vision pro. apple clearly doesn't care! and if they pretend they do... don't fall for it
This is my 2nd time listening to this episode. Best in the game!
This seems like a bot and you got a heart?
With all the criticisms, most people like these things, and will find uses for them that the three here can’t seem to imagine. That always happens. It’s more important to criticize in talks like this.
Intelligence will only be operation on the latest iPhone
1:31:30 would the new ipad pros with the dual layer OLED be able to convey 3D depth outside of a vision pro?
Absolutely not. Tandem OLED just allows for greater brightness by layering two displays. It’s not a lenticular display. No way to send one view to each eye
Apple doing these small updates to OSs and AI features does 2 things. Eliminates envy and migration to other brands, for that one feature. And because they are the only brand that has killer products every category means AI can actually be used, like the stuff Microsoft dreams about only Apple can make a reality. In no world would I use co pilot on my laptop, then switch to Gemini on my phone, Alexa here…. Etc. the only way AI can know you and truly be an assistant is through ubiquitous consistency. Any recall feature is useless if it’s only on your laptop.
Tbh, Apple is probably paying OpenAI for the integration, given that the Apple users will get GPT 4o for free.
Google being the default search engine on iPhones makes them money from the ad clicks. That's not the case for OpenAI. This would only cost them money, except for the few users that would actually go subscribe. The integration for free though disincentives people to actually subscribe to GPT 4o. So it only makes sense that Apple is actually paying OpenAI instead of the other way around.
Gpt4o is free for all users
True, but also, like Nilay finding sponsors for the lightning round, OpenAI has no idea how to make money
