Thanks for posting this. I’m always interested in quality presentations, quality discussion, and I appreciate your candor and insight. I can relate to your story, since I used to be homeless and broke, eating from a soup kitchen. I’ve had hard times since that time, gained and lost but I’ve also gained again. Today I’m a ship captain, a pilot, published author, a father, husband (happily married to a Filipina), and living a simple life in the Philippines. I don’t own a mansion, don’t drive a fancy car, don’t flaunt wealth. It’s better to live frugally, live in the moment, appreciate the good people in my life and seek to have a peaceful life among good neighbors. Greetings from Panay.

Excellent insight and very honest about your experience and lessons learned from spending years in the Philippines. You’re also very eloquent - you’ve described your views very realistically from an expat eyes, as well as from Filipinos mentally or perspectives without being offensive to Filipinos about those crab mentally, the poverty, Filipinos’ resilience, etc. You understand Filipino culture deeply - that’s impressive. You are not sugar coating things just to get views.
I’m a Filipina who’s been living in Canada for the last 40+ years since my early teenage years. For the last year or so, I’ve been contemplating what it would be like to go back home and stay for perhaps 3 to 6 months there to test the water. I’ve only gone back twice, each for 4 weeks and that was in 2010 & 2014. Alot has changed since then. The country has developed tremendously.
You pretty much talked about the concerns I have. For example living in the province vs Urban area, also brought the conveniences that North America or Western world has to offer. Having sufficient funds to live comfortably.
Kudos to you for presenting it realistically and candidly.
    Really great video!

    • @conikutch
      @conikutch 12 дней назад +1

convenience, u cannot really get in PH. Noise and air pollution is crazy + unbearable hot weather ..but it can be minimized as per your lifestyle.
If you like urban vibe, u can live in condominium… if it is in Metro Manila, get the one near train station, choose an elevation where u can’t hear the traffic anymore. they mostly have massage facilities and groceries on sight.
if it is province, it’s straightforward having house, u can get contractual helper not in-house. for me this is my style, I like that person to be able to get home to his/her family.
but all of that for later, your plan of living there 6 mos - 1 year sounds great to test the water and knows what you really will need and want.
I hate the inconvenience in PH, but I have a place in the city and I designed it to be calm and chill…so, that mitigate the annoyance of that inconvenience …

@@conikutchit depends where u live , I'm also in Canada and planning to snow bird back home in the province. Where we live, it's in barrio/village. Surrounded with mountains, farmlands infront, clean flowing river at the back of houses. I wouldn't say it's pollution free, this whole planet is polluted, but I love the smell from the grass and when the rice harvest is almost near, the air smells so good! You can count how many vehicles go by, kids can play on the street unsupervised. There are also cooler places in the country, me personally, I like it hot than cold. The waters and the sea is so cold I can't go swimming here even during summer.

Nice, happened to me too after finishing college in the US and being raised there, took a while to get a good job I really liked and struggled thru life for 10 plus years living paycheck to paycheck and tons of credit card bills. What really turned the tied for us was the fact that my wife also worked and we slowly paid our debts and as we build job experience we were able to quit one job and get another one with better pay. @@Captain_Truckerit's in our culture to repay our parents when they grow old and couldn't take care of themselves anymore. If parents don't have money, then it's the children's responsibility to provide for them, who else will? It will be so ungrateful if the children neglect the parents . When my parents got really sick and couldn't work, I became the bread winner of the family at age 19, I had to stop college and worked overseas to pay for their medication and sent my 6 younger siblings to school. That's one of Filipino traits, close family ties, so you are blessed you have a half Filipino kid, you won't be in retirement homes , he'll be there for you 😊

Yup.. you are one of the most sensible so far expat that I have watched..
I am a Filipina, and that is what I have been commenting on those senior foreigners who chose to retire here, thinking that finding a good Filipina to live with or marry would be easy and living like a king with 2 thousand dollars is possible just because they heard it from somebody else.
ANd there are those who complain about their neighbor's noise either from the loud barking of dogs or the sound of their karaoke or the honks of the vehicles or the roar of those motorbikes..
Well.. please .. tell them this fact.
If an expat wants to live in peace and comfortably here, he must at least have a monthly income or pension of not less than 4k dollars if he us single.
He should rent a nice home in a private/gated subdivision, which is not that close to the highway.. he must buy his own car or bike or motorcycle so he could move from his place anytime to wherever he wants to go.. beach, market, mall or out of town..
He should always have that cash ready to pay for his monthly bills .. electricity, water, Internet and for his hair cut and massage and gasoline of course and to buy his food from supermarkets that American products are available.
He must remember that after covid, inflation has skyrocketed everywhere, and prices of commodities almost doubled, so those videos he may have watched on other vloggers pre pandemic era are no longer applicable today.
Finding a single pinay who is an ideal partner is no longer that easy. Because a lot of them are no longer as simple as before. Women now have become wiser. There may still be some who may be willing to settle for an old guy as long as he can provide her a comfortable life but women now have jobs and don't want to be tied up at home. They do not even want to have children. Those provincial refined ladies are very seldom to find anymore.

I started in the US as poor as a lot of people here in the PH. Getting to where I am now required a lot of work on myself, leaving a lot of the naysayers behind, as well as working hard to live the American dream. Had a great life in the US. Wife passed, kids are doing well, and I retired to the Philippines. Now at 80 I’m building a future with my Filipina wife with land and a house. Building a house in the Philippines does require a lot of cash, especially at my age (can’t get loans).

It’s all in the mindset. I was born and raised poor, not because there aren’t any opportunity but because my folks chose to be poor. They have this mindset that for as long as we are together, for them it was enough not minding the future that is their children might live. And so, after graduating from college, I left our small town and moved to the city, Bacolod, got a job, helped my other siblings who by the way are older than I am go and finish school. One was able to put up a business that thrived until today. Fast forward today, I can say that I have helped my family got out of poverty and lived a kind of life that they are living today because of that one important decision that I made. Poverty is a choice. Glad I didn’t choose to be one.❤

Some Americans say they are poor, because they compared their life in Philippines with their US standard.
Living in a city like manila and province (small towns) is another factor to define of being rich or poor. Your P10,000 might not be enough in big city but already living good in a province.

Could you please explain that the average end of life healthcare cost is around 300,000 Dollars.
That means a fully insured person's copay is about 30,000 Dollars at least.
Near the end of life the final years one's medical cost per month are on average 1209 Dollars per month but the average Social Security payment is 1750 Dollars per month.
Then around 90 percent of bankruptcy filing in the US are due to unpaid medical bills And the people who file are filing largely due to copays and thus are or we're insured at the time they incurred the medical bills.
So, even if one receives a 50 percent discount in Latin America, South East Asia, Eastern Europe, Africa one still is facing 15,000 Dollar in copays.
30,000 is the most realistic copay if one will have flexibility.
Maybe you can explain why having 30,000 on hand is the first goal that one must reach prior to stepping foot outside of the Developed nations for any extended period of time.
And that applies to old men, as I am, but young men, Passport Brothers had better have co-pays also.
Laying down with a piece of ass in an expensive hotel is great when one has the peace of mind knowing that if it were a hospital bed rather than a hotel bed one has the co-pays.

Thats how i understand Crab mentality - All are in one bucket. One crab climb's over the other to get out of the bucket with no regards to how far the other crab might sink. And yes you should have at least 2000$ monthly to live there. And you should still no matter what, have that amount monthly when the day come's that you will have to, or will want to say good bye to this country. It is an disaster to arrive in your home country homeless, old, no friends, no family and with less then 2000$ a month. Even if you build a house in the Philippines that you WILL end up loosing.

    what does 2k buy you?

    • @coollary1

@ yes you’re right. one size doesn’t fit all
but the price of goods and services don’t vary too wildly from city to city. but it does from city to province.
I look around for videos that share the actually cost of things. Why is it so hard for people to say, a bottle of water cost X pesos here and laundry per kilo is X pesos. While in this other area it’s %20 more.

    • @Captain_Trucker

How much is the meat? how much for a fridge? stove? seasoning?
I’ve said above how I lived in africa. I’ve cooked on charcoal stoves, lived without a fridge, learned how to keep mice/rats and roaches out the food by using glass/metal containers and chilis.
But idk how much a glass jar cost in the philippines or a pack of chili powder.
A budget video is all well and good. But what does the budget buy you. How much do things cost. What do you spend on? I’m sure guys would like to know how much it costs to raise your son and what you buy on the regular for him.

  • @gerricabanayan1194
    @gerricabanayan1194 16 дней назад

Poverty in the U.S., I think, is a choice! You are just really plain lazy if you can’t get a job to fend for yourself. When you are young, you have to prepare for your golden years. In my 30’s and 40’s, although it was difficult, I have worked 2-3 jobs working at least 60 hours a week because I like spending money on what I want (not needs). Now, that I am older, I don’t have to work as much because I have already satisfied myself with the material things money can buy, and has set aside a good amount to have a comfortable retirement. For some people, they only have one job, (their choice), which only provides for their current situation, and not have enough for savings and investments/retirement. But, it’s still up to the person to plan for his/her future.

Later on they can work in the U.S. for better financial opportunities.

3500 pension as US NAVY monthly after working 20 years.. filipinos retired here in the philippines...
