Then he sees Gildarts the way an enemy sees him. An unstoppable force of nature that will strike him down the moment he moves. It's gotta really be a mind feck to see a father / mentor figure look at you like that and you realize you have no chance of victory at all.

This battle is a huge matter for this anime. Up until now, Natsu has been UNCONQUERABLE. No matter what, he would always step up to you and fight until he won or was unconscious. They need to train and a LOT! it may take up to YEARS before Natsu could take Gildarts or a dragon. However, once Natsu surpasses someone, that someone can't surpass Natsu. If Natsu had the power to slay dragons right from when the show started, Jellal wouldn't last HALF A SECOND when Natsu went Dragon Force on him, same with Laxus and Gildarts, Gildarts fought a dragon and lost the battle, if Natsu was this strong he could take on Gildarts and probably beat him. Remember this: Natsu has the GREATEST potential to become the strongest (YES STRONGER THAN MAKAROV and maybe even Zeref!).
The dragon gildarts fought wasn't an ordinary dragon, just walking away from that fight alive proves gildarts is quite possibly the strongest in the anime right now. But natsu does have the most potential, he also has the protagonist bonus, hes the main character so of course he'll have to become the strongest (just look at ichigo lol)
