I'm glad I got to ride the Nova 3 service once, before the decision to withdraw them from service. Very comfortable First Class.
Seems like this train gave an impressively smooth and quiet ride. I remember shuttling back and forth between Huddersfield and Leeds in the 1980s, in rattly old Mk1 coaches, behind a class 45. Mild concussion every time I got off the train. Some great memories along the route here, many thanks for uploading!
I can't find anything to criticize about the train. You departed on time, arrived on time, and the train was nicely designed and clean (except for the leak in the restroom).
I have to say, as much as I loved the train, the cats stole the show!!!!
In standard class it's awful actually. Hard seats, awful window alignment, no catering, bumpy ride (sometimes as bad as a pacer). That's what I found anyway
@@moose_ringo9161 if you get to the USA, from New York, ride MTA from Grand Central Terminal to New Haven, Connecticut. Talk about comfort, no food, and clean. PLEASE!!!
@@moose_ringo9161 all catering is suspended due to COVID
@Sleeper Train Fan okay! Mind tho my comment was posted about 6 months ago
Instant like for the shout-out to my own favourite city in the UK, Liverpool :) Definitely need to go back once international travel is possible again!
Enjoyed that, and those first class seats looked really comfortable. Not sure how many routes the Nova 3 is on, but I hope it is a lot, as it looks like a huge improvement on what it replaced. Lovely to end in Scarborough.
when they are all in service they will be doing Liverpool to Scarborough and Manchester Airport - Redcar. massive improvements.
I believe crew training on these is happening between Sheffield, and Cleethorpes…?
@@timothyparsons8327yeah it’s done some cleethorpe routes :)
Lovely vlog Dylan. Your stories are a delightful way to escape the dreadful times we are experiencing in Australia
The videos keep me refreshed thank you so much
Glad you're enjoying them! Hope you are doing well.
Good Luck, mate! :)
@@RocketJSykes
Thank you
Hey I was Born in Scarborough!!!!
Ontario, Canada lol
Another great video by the way
Never mind what you said about the Loco's sound, I was reading your mind, your not only adore that livery, you feel the same way about that loco and it's fabulous sound, never mind what your mother says. Station cats, Felix and Bolt, you spend too much time around railway stations, it seems. I'll tell you one day, why all cats prefer their human slaves to be boi's, that is another story. I wasn't going to say, but you have got to be one of the UK's greatest railway fan's, as well as being a very rare young guy, taking a great interest in all kinds of history and geography, where most young people, have little interest in it any more. Keep up the great work Dylan! Felix and Bolt look adorable! The interior is beautiful, the First Class table lamps are amazing, a lovely finishing touch.
Finally Dylan, you video tape a train loo that's flooded. Welcome to the real world. 😁 I like the train. To bad there aren't any first class freebies. No first class freebies, no first class seating ticket bought by me. The English countryside in summer is breathtaking.
Given that you pay for them in the ticket price (normally), perhaps we should say 'inclusives' instead?
@@gharwood1356 True. I agree completely.
Love the color scheme, from the livery to the interior!
First few minutes if the video…the rain, the station, the beautiful color and great lines of the train snd the hum of the locomotive…I’m mesmerized…
Maybe the buttons on the doors are less prone to fail than sensors. Who knows. Great video :)
I assumed it was because the designer, pre covid, anticipated overcrowding on the Liverpool-Manchester-Leeds section of the route, where standing passengers in the door areas would cause sensors to open and close the doors constantly.
I have to agree, Dylan, those trains look amazing! I've not ridden one but certainly wouldn't mind.
Been on one of these sets a few times. Quality trains i didnt wanna get off
@@ajf3202 LOL.That good, huh !? Lol. I get that ! Lol. Very nice to know that ! Thanks for sharing it ! I don't believe I'll ever get on this train sadly ! As I live in the States & my future travel there won't be including the route or iterinary ! But ,I bet some people will appreciate it to read/ know here !! 👍😃💜🥁🎵🐉🎤🎶🚄🚈🚅💞
@@spark_6710 mate you shouldve come over 5 years ago when we had decent trains all over. Frequent HST and 225 services, pacers and old EMUs. Nowadays its a bit shite apart from the 68 sets, the rare HST and limited 225 services.
From the Greatest city in the North West to the wonderful seaside resort of Scarborough! Great trains the Mark 5 sets are. Smashing video Dylan!
Thanks 😁
I think you confused the phrase 'From the', with the phrase 'via the'
The train didn't originate in Manchester; perhaps you got confused. 🤔
Yet another great video Dylan! I watch and like all of your vids, but especially one in the UK. Wow, I wish we had such nice trains in the US.
I know ,right !!!? 😫👍👍💜🥁🎵🐉🎤🎶🚄🚈🚅💞
Thanks 😁
And we have amtrak goin
I love the sound of that V16 Caterpillar engine on the class 68.
Excellent review, thats a fair priced ticket for the distance travelled.Might try this route later in the year. Thanks Dylan.
I went to York last week! I really liked the design of the station, and it was great to see the Nova trains too! I like how each train has a different design.
Yes, York is a beautiful station!
Hi Dylan, another great review. Thanks for the bike storage detail and reservation requirement, also good 'tracking' bike shot in your closing sequence. Cheers Tim.
Thanks!
Excellent stuff. My hometown looking magnificent as always, even in the rain. Hopefully I’ll finally get on one of these trains next year
Great video Dylan! I travelled on the Nova 3 last year from Scarborough to York in standard. I was impressed with the level of comfort/modern. :-) I took the Nova 1 between Liverpool and Leeds a few months ago, really enjoyed the trip! Looking forward to the next upload!
Thanks!
Great coverage of TransPennine's latest offering. My experiences with this operator in first class were of similar standard to yours (minus the flood of course). I travelled from Edinburgh to Carlisle in a refurbished Class 350 and from York to Manchester Victoria in a Class 185. I agree with your sentiments about the livery and interior decor. Very pleasant. Thanks for showing the Canal scenes and the Pennines. Opposite direction to my travel over the same route. Neville Hill had a pair of colourful Class 08 Shunters on display when I went past. We had a number of these on Victorian Railways from 1951 until the early 1980's and at least two survive in preservation. They were our F Class.
I see the air was rather bracing at Scarborough the day you travelled. By contrast, my May 22nd was a pleasant, sunny autumn day which I enjoyed at Castlemaine, getting coverage of a Steam Tour and having a picnic in the botanical gardens.
Thanks again for your quality production and I look forward to next week's offering. Cheers from Michael downunder in Melbourne.
Thankfully, TPE no longer operate the 350s (they've been replaced by the Nova 2s). Not that they were bad trains, just often very overcrowded.
Nice trip, Dylan. I can't help but wonder if Don Coffey is your train driver! There is a good viewing platform at the York Railway Museum to watch passing trains too.
Hasn't DC retired? Mind his channel is still active and posting great content. I'm particularly keen on his Trans Pennine coverage.
Thanks, I hadn't looked at the dates - just watched his vids.
I like your videos, especially with trains from UK, and your reviews are the best!
Thanks!
@@DylansTravelReports you got that beat for reviews
I like the TPE livery and your videos, thank you!
I traveled on these regularly at the end of 2019/early 2020 between Seamer and Manchester or Lea Green, and less frequently since. They are a big improvement in passenger comfort from the old class 185s. No under floor engines, doors at the ends will proper vestibules, means no more 'thermal cycling' of passengers in hot or cold weather and more seats, which were badly needed. However they have been unreliable, and the noise from the engines has prompted complaints from Scarborough residents, the noise seems to be very penetrating and carries a long way, stood at Seamer you can almost hear it leaving Scarborough. Quite a bit of vibration on some track can be irritating. Overall I think your summary captures most of the important points. Keep up the good work.
Fantastic "Alien" face of the engine. Beautiful colors on the train indeed, amazing patterns and design. I think this is the first time that I see a Clear Palette of colors for the First Class seats. That railway bench is awesome, no doubt about it..! You got to Scarborough Fair huh? Another fantastic train, thanks for the ride..!!
Great video Dylan. Onboard the mark 5 with a 68 warskip which is awesome and also I enjoyed the video 👍.
Thanks!
Great video. I hadn't come across your channel before. Nice to see a UK railway keeping loco haulage and adopting the driving-trailer (or control car) at the opposite end, as frequently used in European railways. Adds a bit of variety and interest and flexibility in making up trains to suit the demand.
Personally, I'm with those who like the looks of the Class 68s and the blue/grey TPE livery.
Thanks!
The Transpennine Express Nova 3 Class 68+Mk5As are very good sets. Mind you Chiltern Railways could of ordered the Mk5A or Mk5 coaches along with the Class 68s to be used on London Marylebone-Shrewsbury, Birmingham Snow Hill, Birmingham Moor Street, Oxford, Aylesbury, Banbury, Evesham, Gloucester Shrub Hill, Gloucester Foregate Street and Stratford-Upon-Avon main line services.
Nice looking train inside and out. Also some nice scenery. Thanks for the train ride.
I love that you always first try the water then the soap, then onwards to the Standedge tunnels, one of the railway tunnels is used as staff entrance for the canal-tunnel-staff manning the intermediate stops.
Wording could have been better, thought you meant there was a Standedge Tunnels button in the toilets.
Lovely video, beautiful journey❤️
Another great video, Dylan. I love the livery and interior too
Thanks!
This whole train looks awesome
Scenic as we pass the canal with loads of new units being built. Train and livery wise agreed best in UK.
Looking forward to seeing these on the ECML between Newcastle and Piccadilly from next month. Look great.
I am pleased to report that I approve of the way you colour coordinated your shoes with the trains carpet.
Great video take care and keep safe.
That train, on the outside, is beautiful:) Now to watch the rest of the video
Edge Hill (just the next station up the line) was opened in 1830. Dates from the Liverpool & Manchester Railway.
I travel on the Nova 3s most weekends. The coaches aren't the best but if you go in first class, the noise of the locomotive makes up for it.
Dylan I do think that if you are reviewing the easy access toilets then you should go through those particular features. Eg is there braille, are there retractable handrails? Etc
Just before the 1st stop, Lea Green, you pass through Rainhill and follow the same route that the Rainhill Trials took in 1829
Arguably the birthplace of the modern Railway
How Cool! Tommorow I am getting on a nova 1 too Lea green I would love to see a review on that Dylan! :)
Enjoy!
Great video I love the livery but I also like Grand Central hope to travel on this train soon I was born in Huddersfield but now live in Leeds Utt
Such an improvement from the old days of the pacer trains when I used to ride the TPE often!
Oh good lord, the Pacer trains! They felt like a intentional punishment for any rail users in the North of England. The SE got nicer trains whilst me in Manchester and the surrounding area got bouncy, knee crushing Pacer trains that screeched around corners. I remember frequently having to commute on them and having to stand in the footwear where the bifold doors recessed into and having to squeeze up at every stop so as not to be injured.
I'd say those were the good old days, but I sont miss them at all.
Wow> Good for you. Youre really traveling alover the world. So nice watchinhg your travel. Good luck Ans stay safe.
Another great video. Heading out on a nova 1 soon. Looking forward to that.
Poppy cat from Churchill Montana say hi to Felix and Bolt, nice video
I think it has to be said that the Liverpool-York route has gone in a few years from being one of the more miserable express experiences in the UK to being one of the best. Upgrades to track, stations, rolling stock and line route have made a considerable impact. I also agree the TPE livery is one of the most eye-catching.
However, much of the route still remains a major traffic bottleneck trapped at 100% capacity. I know the plan is to re-quadruple much of the line - specifically the congested Manchester-Leeds corridor. It was also supposed to get electrified but that plan was repeatedly cancelled in the past. The line could be facing competition in the future from the proposed HS3 route, but frankly I don't expect that will ever happen. We're just too far from London to ever expect that kind of cash to be spent on rail infrastructure.
Thanks for this video. I love that part of the world. I was supposed to visit there last year, but, you know, Covid.
Great vid, scenic journey. About the same duration google says it is to drive. I know which I would prefer
I totally agree with you switching seats. I also don't like Backward-facing rides. For a train that used to run hourly, I didn't see but two or three people per car. I think it would be interesting if someday when things are normal, you ride the same train and include som comparative shots. Nice smooth trip.
I don’t like backward facing seats either
Thank you for a great review. I too have travelled on these trains several times, and agree with all that you say. The seats are excellent, but the ride quality is poor, and those carriages ALL rattle ! Even worse, TPE are excruciatingly slow at getting all the Nova 3 sets into service. They are supposed to be used on the Manchester Airport to Middlesbrough and Redcar service as well, but I am not aware of any being seen on that route yet, and after all this time. No doubt First TPE blame Covid for everything, but they are being pathetic in not providing any onboard service, ( they do on GWR !) and even worse is the absurd area cordoned off at the front of the 1st Class carriage. Ridiculous.
It's been a grim weather week but nice to see Birkenhead and the Belfast Ferry from a distance. It would have been nice to see the remarkable outside of Huddersfield Station as well as the cats. "Toolbox' is worth adding as an app to your 'phone so that you can report on the riding ambiance and noise in the carriages. One of your commentators refers to the excessive internal noise below. Best way to go to Wick is one way and return by 'plane to Aberdeen. By train both ways in a 156 gets a bit tedious.....and noisy if they must have the hopper windows open under Covid regs. Don Coffey's cab view recording of much of this route is well worth watching.
I liked the longest bench in the world..sounds like your journey with no beverages,
They may install a vending machine at the end of the world's longest bench
Another great video friend.
Really enjoyable!
I hope to do this trip sometime in the next couple of years, and this train seems to be timed to catch those of us who would be coming from the Belfast ferry. The connections would be tight though and any delay would mean a later train, none of which are direct.
I've stayed in Huddersfield a few times with my friend who was a teacher in a school on New Hey Rd. I loved its market and Indian restaurants.
Good video
Hi Dylan The two black cats are adorable!!! I love the long train ride!!! Happy 4th if July to you Dylan and your family!!!
Thanks!
Another great journey thanks for sharing 😀👍
great review! You did an awesome job! I hope to see your 2nd class adventure on it.
Thanks!
Haha glad you are from Huddersfield I live one stop away :)
Splendid review as usual.
Thanks!
Awesome video Dylan, really interesting......Thank you
Glad you enjoyed!
Looking forward to seeing (and hearing) a class 68 in real life. They sound superb on video. I reckon they're up there with Valentas and Deltics for sound.
If things were done properly, they'd be electric and nearly silent.
@@EuroScot2023 nah pal. properly is a loud roaring engine. proper trains these
Beautiful train, inside and out.
Last time I got the Liverpool-Scarborough train, it stopped at Widnes, Warrington Central, Manchester Oxford Road and Piccadilly. Shows you how long ago that was
I think the route change for TPE trains is simply to ease congestion at Piccadilly, which is short of track and platform capacity.
It was nice to see a bit of the Wirral at the very start of this video cos that’s where i’m from. I hope TPX reinstate the regular direct services from Liverpool to Scarborough soon cos I really want to try the Nova 3 but don’t want to have to get up at 5am to do so.
Nice view of the Wirral from Liverpool at the start
Probably the best First Class/Intercity Train just behind the HST. Super Comfortable and extremely quiet.
Great trip, also great livery.
Great job Dylan!
Thanks!
Beautiful train in KLM Blue colors 😉
It's beautiful you make awesome vlogs I recently started watching your channel and I love your videos keep going and be safe
Thanks 😁
The livery is just awesome!
I agree with you about the livery on the new TPE trains, I certainly haven't seen a nicer one in the UK. It's particularly impressive on that Class 68 loco, it makes it really stand out
Like you I really like the TPE livery, it has to be the best of train liveries!! My worry is when GBR takeover all the originality and initiative will be lost as we see so well done with TPE. Living in Leeds, and you were looking out the wrong side of the carriage to have seen my apartment, I am very familiar with TPE’s services and rolling stock. I hope they do reinstate both the hourly Liverpool Scarborough service with the 68’s and their First Class offer - the only TOC, I think, not to attempt to bring anything back!
Nobody else booked a seat in the carriage but TPE booked you a backward facing seat 🤔👻
Good tip about looking out for the Scarborough railway bench
I'd move if not busy
I like backward facing seats in trains!!
@@imsbvs why out of interest?
@@s125ish everytime the train slows the movement pushes me into the seat, in tests in aircraft it is said in an emergency that reverse facing seats are safer as the seat protects the passenger unlike forward facing seats where the passenger is flung out of their seat. I have flown sitting in a reverse facing seat, it was fine.
Hi Dylan, as ever your video is of a really high standard and really informative.
I will be travelling from Birmingham to Wick next year, have you got any travel advice for most scenic and best prices please.
Hi Paul, I travel to Wick quite regularly and find the views from Inverness are much better sitting on the right. When booking this journey I suggest that you look to split ticketing as a through ticket for this journey could be very expensive. Enjoy your trip.
@@1954alister thankyou for the reply I will use your advice wisely.

Looks like a great trip. I have heard you and other people say the coaches are "rattliy"...
"Huddersfield, my home and birth place". :-O Crumbs, with a name like Dylan I had you down as a Taffy! ;-)
I am old enough to recall when a class 45 would haul these services. Great to see a loco back on them as the multiple units were not (IMO) up to the job....
They are great and have two of them with 6 coaches on my layout.
The livery is modern and stylish.....love it
Ahh the sound of that Class 68 :)
Nova 1 is still the best imo :P, glad we've got that on the Newcastle route
Reliance used to do the edinburgh and cowdenbeath run in fife for Scotrail.
Well travelled locomotive.
nice train.
Yeah, until the noisy bastard thing comes past my house.
Very brave, risking Leeds again!!
I always think a decent rail trip in the north of the UK is Crewe > Chester > Llandudno Junction > Bangor > Holyhead. Decent views along the N Wales coast.
You should maybe do a Northern class 170 trip, I've never been on one but Northern seats do look quite comfortable
I have one filmed that I may release at some point.
@@DylansTravelReports ahh cool! I'd expect them 170's to be a bit on the noisy side as they're quite old now having been with Scotrail.
Great trip report
Thanks!
The train seems to be noisy because the diesel engines, isn't it ?
It's sad that this kind of new train haven't two mods : electric and diesel. We often saw the catenary during the journey. It could be more ecological and economical for the company... 🤔
In fact, a bi-mode variant of this locomotive is going to be introduced and it will be called "class 88" and is going to be equipped with both pantograph and diesel engine
Unfortunately, much of the part between Manchester and York doesn't have overhead wires yet.
Our goverment keeps chopping and changing its plans. Not long ago, the whole TP route was to be electrified, but now they've proposed High Speed 3: Northern Powerhouse Rail, the latest excuse to offer Northerners a tempting but almost certainly too expensive and far-off solution. So we continue to wait for an upgrade to this Victorian route.
The seating in second class is off. However, for the most part I think I can suffer for three hours. The cost of the upgrade is just not worth it. Post pandemic, with many more passengers, may prod me to spend. As it is the trainset is awesome. Thank you for the video.
Nice to see a loco hauled passenger train, bit of a rarity nowadays. Some residents in York have complained that class 68's are noisy & disturbing their peace when parked up at platform 4. I take it they are not as old as me and haven't experienced a Deltic. I could hear the hum as they pulled out of the station and I'm three and a half miles away.
Nice vedio . Thanks
I travelled on these nearly every week
Great seeing the great city of liverpool again I visited the city in 2017 on vacation from New Zealand. outside London with Edinburgh my favourite UK cities. are the UK railway tickets still very expensive I could not believe the pricing for train tickets ?
It depends how far in advance you buy. If you buy in advance, they're usually pretty cheap but not on the day or for flexible tickets.
I have been on the Hitachi Nova 1 and Desiro on Transpennine
well bone. thank you
