  • HOW FAST is a 1968 HEMI Super Bee ??
    Please HIT Subscribe: / @roadtesttv @Road Test TV
    A very rare 1968 Hemi Super Bee takes on some potent old school muscle cars which include a 1969 Hurst Olds. 1971 Buick GSX Stage 1; 1971 LS6 Corvette and 1969 Hemi Road Runner (twice).
    All of the cars in the video are very rare and desired muscle cars competing in the Pure Stock Drags class. So, how so how does other Detroit muscle stack up against an 1968 Hemi Super Bee powered a Hemi headed 426 Cubic Inch (7 L) motor with dual quads which was conservatively rated at 425 horsepower.
    The first car take on the Hemi Super Bee is a 1969 Hurst Olds equipped with Oldsmobile's torque monster 455 cubic inch motor rated at 385 horsepower.
    The second car to take on the Hemi Super Bee is a 1971 Buick GSX Stage 1. The GSX is equipped with Buick's torquey 455 cubic inch Stage 1 engine; however, since it is a 1971 it has a lower compression ratio than the 1970 Stage 1 and lost about 45 horsepower - went from 360 HP in 1970 to 315 HP in 1971.
    The third car to take on the Hemi Super Bee is a very rare 1971 Chevrolet 454 LS6 Corvette. The LS6 Corvette is 1 of 188 built in 1971 and is equipped with Chevrolet's legendary 454 cubic inch LS6 engine; however, since it is a 1971 it has a lower compression ratio than the LS6 that powered the Chevelle in 1970 and lost about 25 horsepower - went from 450 HP in 1970 to 425 HP in 1971. However, the 1971 LS6 Corvette came from the factory with Aluminum heads whereas the 1970 LS6 Chevelle had iron heads.
    The last car to race the Hemi Super Bee is a 1969 Hemi Road Runner which is equipped with the same 426 cubic inch Hemi that powers the Hemi Super Bee. Both cars weigh about the same, and both are rated at 425 horsepower. The Hemi Road Runner takes on the Hemi Super Bee for two races.... so who wins ?
    All the cars in the video are competing in the Pure Stock Drags, so modifications are very limited. The only modifications permitted are minor porting, blue printing and minor weight reduction without altering the stock appearance. Camshafts and compression ratio have to be within a small percentage of stock specs. That means stock intake manifold, stock exhaust manifolds and street tires.
    So WHO WINs? Watch the video and see what happens.

    I had a 69 AMX with a 390 t-10 B/W set-up in the 70's. Had headers and an edlebrock intake. Basically stock. It used to eat my dad's super bee and his Plymouth 440. It would leave it out of the hole. My dad had a 'Cuda as well. Mom had a 73 Targa Porsche. Good car times back then. All three mopars were destroyed in a warehouse fire. GSX Stage 1 is dead sexy but torque is much lower when compared to the Stage 2. I will assume that is a real GSX as many phonies were duplicated. The Hemi engine in those Dodges are just unreal. The consistency of the raw power from the factory is historic. Excellent vids.

      As the day wears on and the air gets cooler, that happens. In bracket racing, you get your dial in time during the day when the Sun is hot and the air is thin, then you're racing towards the evening as the air is getting cooler and more dense and your car ends up running a little faster than your dial-in, so you have to watch busting your dial-in but also beating the guy in the other lane. Bracket racing is about as running as consistent as possible

      Hey, I could be wrong, but how do ya know these races were actually shown in proper order? Another thing I noticed, was how he ran ever so slightly slower when racing the other Hemi. Watch the entire video again: The featured Hemi ran a fastest pass of: 11.68 against the Corvette. But he ran only an 11.86 and an 11.78 during both races shown against the other Hemi at the END of the video. Granted, they were all 11 second passes ( and very impressive, I might add ), but we have no way of knowing "in what actual order" these races took place. With each pass, less gas in the tank may have helped ET's ( unless he purposely kept the same amount of fuel for each run as close as possible for weight reduction ), but then again, the temperatures & track conditions could get "worse" or "better" throughout the day as well. And just because the video maker stated: "next up" for each race, it doesn't necessarily mean that was the proper order in reality. Only the video maker could tell us that. ????????

And the 1970-71 Hemi was a bit milder than the 1966-69 Hemi because of the switch from solid lifters to a more emissions friendly hydraulic cam in 1970. So I wonder what kind of power the 1966-69 Hemi made. Definitely had to be over 500 horses(515-520 maybe more?) at 6000 rpm with the more radical solid cam

      @@redrum2204 They all still need to stay in certain guidelines no matter what as far as cam specs what can be done to the heads pistons or what carburetors can be used so they aren't terribly far from stock . Engine blue printing goes a long ways on how much more hp they can make as well as how much better they run compared to coming out of the factory stock & I believe this class allows for engine blue printing to be done plus it helps to know how to set up the suspension on these with these stock sized Red line tires that don't give very good traction . One thing you have to remember though is back in 70 or 71 Bobby Issac set a NASCAR record with a Hemi winged car on the track that was the first ever 201.104 mph that was timed by the officials something never done by any other car manufacturer running in NASCAR back then or since because even the new cars aren't going that fast close but I have yet to see one go 200 mph even today ! Eventually NASCAR started making the Hemi winged cars use only 1 carburetor instead of 2 & other things to slow them down until they got banned all together but Issac decided to go run & set records with the very same car at the Bonneville salt flats but set up to run on the salt & that very same car ran 216.00 + MPH & broke many records one because that winged body back then for an American muscle car used in NASCAR was the most arrow dynamic body out for high speed & Chrysler even took it to the air Force Base to the world's largest wind tunnel to test & make improvements on it plus the fact that the Hemi engine can be built to make astounding HP sets them apart from other cars . The big block Chevrolet can make good HP for sure but I was around in those days at the drag strips & the engine to beat was the Hemi & if you watched any of the nitro fuel guys most were running the Hemi & of course you had the BB Chevrolet guys & Ford guys but none of those engines could make the HP on alcohol or nitro like the Hemi engine can & it's still that way in those classes today being the modern top fuel engine is derived off of the 426 hemi but using all billet solid blocks heads & other custom made parts to withstand the 14,000 HP they supposedly make today .

      So he will let me take his entire engine apart. Right there on the drag strip? I could pull his spark plugs and check compression. I can disassemble his valve train. I can pull out his camshaft? Look at the pistons and crank shaft. Check the tolerance on his manifold. The list goes on and on. I'm sure he doesn't even try and hide the fact that it's not stock.

    I love this video on the drag racing. My only thing with it though is they did not use a 1969 Roadrunner like they said they did. They used a 1968 Roadrunner. I know by the taillights. In a 69 Roadrunner they don't have the blinker like that either. I own a 69 Roadrunner and the one in this video was not one.

    The HEMI factory numbers were intentionally de-rated. That engine is far more powerful than it appears...

    • @jeremythompson9122
      @jeremythompson9122 4 года назад +2

      The majority of the muscle cars of that era were underrated. Chrysler rated the 426 Hemi at 425 horsepower but it achieved that at only 5000 rpm. A Hemi would rev up over 7000 rpm and continued to make power almost right up until it's redline. I saw a bone stock 1970 426 Hemi on an engine dyno and it made 493 horsepower at 6000 rpm and well over 500 lb/ft of torque at 4000 rpm I believe. And most people don't realize the 1970-71 426 Hemi was a bit milder than the 1966-69 version because of the switch from solid lifters to a more emissions friendly hydraulic camshaft in 1970.

  • @100inthewind
    @100inthewind 4 года назад +2

    The 426 hemi was underrated at 425 horsepower. That was measured at a lower rpm. On purpose. When reved up all the way (around 6k rpm) it measured 500 horsepower. And that's why they win.

    These are F.A.S.T. cars ( Factory appearance, stock tire ) but you can do anything to them under the engine's exterior. These hemis are closer to 600hp and far away from their original "425" rating. That black 1968 dodge started out as a coronet post car and was restored to look like a real 68 super bee.

    The corvette was not an l88
    The l88 were only built from 1967-1969 and were only in the 427 ci variant. There was never a 454 l88.
    If that vette was an l88 it would have won

    • @jeremythompson9122
      @jeremythompson9122 4 года назад +1

      An L88 vs a 68 Hemi Dart or Barracuda Super Stock would be a more even matchup than an L88 vs a Street Hemi. The 12.5:1 compression Race Hemi was a whole different animal than the regular production 10.25:1 compression Street Hemi

    • @tomfaltash9634
      @tomfaltash9634 4 года назад

      Though the L88 was a race engine with a compression of 12.5:1. It not only was very fast in a straight line but in most cases out handle most American made street cars of its time.

      88tcoupe if you’ll listen to the idle of the hemi you’ll notice the LSA and intake centerline have been altered from the stock profile camshaft. Headers and tires are permissible but the fact remains there was some serious cheating going on there with cars that weren’t the fastest in their day but are now🤔.
