    People who buy aquatic turtles from pet stores need to see this video to get an idea of what their turtle will need. Nothing beats a pond and real sunlight for good turtle health (mental and physical). Please do not buy turtles when people are literally dumping them at dog/cat shelters and on Craigslist or at reptile rescues. Worst still in California people dump sliders in the ecosystem where they compete with native species and as an "invasive species" people kill and abuse them. #adoptdontshop

    Since there's no filtration, does it stink? I have a red ear slider in a tank and it smells really bad if the water isn't changed frequently!
    Second question is what type of fish do you have, to deal with mosquito larvae?

    • @BackyardTortoise
      @BackyardTortoise  6 лет назад +4

      Hi John, no it does not smell. Tanks can get funky, especially if you feed your turts in them. We have a few turtle tanks indoors for our Reeves hatchlings, Florida soft shell juvis and snakeneck turtles. We have 2 foam filters in each tank along with duckweed and anacharis plants to help filter and keep the water clean- plus we have fish, catfish, rosy reds in the tanks as well. For the pond we have goldfish and minnows. We will keep an eye on the mosquito situation, didnt have an issue last year but the seasons in the North East have been out of whack which also messes up the entire ecosystem! Hope some of this helped!

    • @BackyardTortoise
      @BackyardTortoise  6 лет назад +1

      Sean Howell hi there. You can try electric fencing. Also a net like canopy over the pond to prevent birds. We have a 6 ft fence around our property and luckily do not have coyotes in our neighborhood! Our friend Chris at Garden State has had luck with the electric fencing around his enclosures. He is in a more rural area with much more predators than we have here. Good luck!

    • @BackyardTortoise
      @BackyardTortoise  5 лет назад +1

      Michael Mckenna Hi Michael, so sorry for the late response as you may have seen we just moved from PA to NC this past week and are running ragged lol. We use a pond aerator for our pond and we will continue to do the same here. Peat is use to soften water, and also reduce the amount of algae growth because of the tannin the peat adds to the water. It also acts as a substrate mix with dirt we add. We like our ponds to be murky for some of our species. Thats just a quick answer but there are a few more in depth discussions if you google it. I hope that helps!!

    • @leaping_willow_0
      @leaping_willow_0 5 лет назад +3

      I recently built a much smaller version of an outdoor turtle pond (roughly 100 gallons) for my RES. It was a 100% DIY project using underlayment ($50) + pond liner ($50) + pond stones ($25) + edible plants ($75) + wood slabs as perimeter fencing ($30) + chicken wire to keep predators out ($25) + solar powered fountain spray ($15). All in all, it cost me roughly $270 plus a full days work. I searched on Craigslist to find someone who was giving away free rocks which I used to lay around the perimeter of my pond and hold the liner in place.

    • @JamieNotLamie
      @JamieNotLamie 4 года назад

      @@isbsjxbxns you can do either but having a "natural" filter like in this video is going to be cheaper. That's what I'm trying to learn how to do is build a natural filtering pond. This video didn't exactly explain anything for me but I'm sure there is videos out there. I'm guessing this guy did a natural pond too since he didn't mention a filter price, just rocks and from what I learned at our local zoo, the sand and rocks ARE the filter.

      @@katlyplqnt4752 Hi Lindsey, Thanks so much for checking us out! I will do my best to answer your questions ;)
      There is a variety of plants and different grasses around the pond along with weeds that just naturally grew in. Hosta and spirea work well but there are many to choose from depending on where you live. Logs were just found around the neighborhood. Just be sure nothing is treated with chemicals. We get ours from our local nursery.
      So much depends on the size of the tub you choose and if you will be using a filter. We use a few inches of peat and you will just have to monitor for water changes as it depends on size and amount of turtles. Be sure the pond is big enough that it doesnt heat up too much in the summer sun.
      The leaves just fall from our trees ;)
      An aerator in just an air pump that keeps the surface water moving to add air and keep it from stagnating.
      To over flow the pond we just leave a garden hose on until the water over flows for a bit.
      There are so many ways to do it but we think every turtle deserves a pond ;) I hope that helped a bit ;)

    What happens in the winter when it's cold? I live in Britain and really would like to do something like this for my two yellow bellies but worried about the winter and predators

    • @BackyardTortoise
      @BackyardTortoise  6 лет назад +2

      Mandrew Rydings We have some pretty tough winters here. It actually got down below zero F and they all were totally fine. The water needs to be deep enough so it doest freeze through. We also ran aeration to be sure the water was agitated. We also cover the bottom with a few inches of peat moss dirt and leaf debris so they can burrow. We have had no issues with predators but we are always on the look out ;)

      Backyard Tortoise thanks for the advice I may have a look in to doing it as one of my turtles is kinda getting too big for his tank and a there is a guy who lives near me with a pet falcon and I'd kill it if it hurt my turtles hahaa 😂 but thanks for the advice and great video

      @BackyardTortoise  6 лет назад +1

      Mandrew Rydings You are very welcome and thank you for the compliment. Ugh that Falcon would stress us out too. Its amazing how different the turtles behave in a more natural environment. If you are able to safely do it, I say go for it! ;)

      Backyard Tortoise if I was to put struts up and chicken wire around that would prevent the falcon from trying out and keep them safe, won't they need a heater to keep the water warm for them as in Britain warm weather is a rare thing hahaha

      @BackyardTortoise  6 лет назад +1

      Mandrew Rydings lol ahh Its hard to say without seeing and unfortunately I dont know much about falcons :D. I also wish I knew more about your climate. The turtles we have in the pond are adapted to this type of weather.

    Where is your filter?

    • @BackyardTortoise
      @BackyardTortoise  6 лет назад

      Dorothy Cerra We do not use a filter. We use water plants, dirt and moss at the bottom for natural filtration. We do use aeration.

  • @mikecmw8492
    @mikecmw8492 4 года назад

    Why would you not have filtration. I have had turtle ponds for decades and never without filtration. But I guess if it works...

    • @BackyardTortoise

      Mike CMW it worked for us :) and the turtles

    • @BackyardTortoise
      @BackyardTortoise  4 года назад +1

      We did add aeration to it. Using live plants and peat/dirt worked great. Low maintenance and the turtles species we kept liked it murky.

    What about mosquitoes tho? And their nasty babies. I would be worried about the water being stagnant and them taking over.

      @@BackyardTortoise not to mention, there are no man-made filtration systems in lakes, creeks, ditches where turtles thrive in the wild.
