Love watching the battles from 1996 thru 2006, just seemed alot more innovative opposed to the new noisy dub/edm trash, the capabilities are cool, but Id like to see these young cats utilize the gear and maby do some more throwback beats not the fast trash routines
Jumping into this argument real quick.... I always liked Melo's cuts better back then, but I get to see Babu cut on occasion nowadays (2017) and he is so sick now. Way better than either of them were back then. Haven't seen Melo cut lately, so I don't know whether he's progressed like Babs has. I like Melo better than Babu as a mix/club/radio DJ. Melo is so clean it's unreal, even when doing creative stuff. But Babu also produces ill beats, and I don't know whether Melo produces beats at all. When it comes to beat juggling, obviously both are sick. I give the slight edge to Melo because his shit sounds more aggressive, but I learned so much from watching both of them on VHS bitd. Ok, well that's my two cents and then some!
+m4ntr0x Yes. If you consider all aspects of DJing - cuts, battling, party rocking, mixing, etc. - I might even go so far as to call Melo the best ever.
+Mike's Old Stuff The best ever is usually a title that's hard to pin down when there are so much killers out there. But Melo D wouldn't be undeserving of it for sure. I kind of have a simple list of favorites. Q-bert fort technical scratches, D-Styles for flow, and Melo D for pristine cuts and juggles. When i think of Melo D i always remember the video where Q is recording him with a VCR camera and the tape is running out, so Melo starts scratching something and ends the bit with the sickest reverse cut ever! You can even hear Q in the background goin' like "UUUUUHHHHHHH, shhh that was dope".

I've still got a little magazine review of this battle, and one of the World Final as well.. A little bit of history/trivia for you - DJ Excel from the UK, who finished 3rd in the battle, behind Melo and Yoshi, demonstrated his "Twiddle" scratch in the battle, which was like a "Crab", but only using 2 fingers on the fader of the Vestax mixer, which was new at the time. Anyway, Q-bert, who was judging the battle, which was held in Japan, saw Excel's scratch, and then went home and incorporated all of his fingers, instead of just two, and the "Crab" was born. Q even mentions this in the book ' Last night a DJ saved my life'.

Melo D is so clean it's unreal. In all of the videos out there, always with those precise cuts. that 7:20 juggle just kills it.
