Fun fact about that improvised cardboard flooring, that was made out of the traders' boxes without their knowledge, so not only did they have to carry their stuff a quarter of a mile to the site, a bunch of them had nothing to carry their stuff back in because the festival staff had stolen and destroyed their boxes.

Yeah absolutely. Last time I went to an event like this they looked at my cane at checkin and basically said I should go home because their event wasn't for people like me (did not offer my money back). I still managed, but what the fuck. People like us are so much of an afterthought that they only realize ON THE DAY WHEN WE ARE DIRECTLY INFRONT OF THEM. It's insane

i watched videos from craft youtubers when the event happened, from what i gather the fiber arts community has lots of disabled members so its not entirely a shock that many attendees were looking at what sort of accommodations were set up for their disabled peers, there are longer videos on the disaster from people who are familiar with the community and event that are very interesting

    • @pbkathleen
      @pbkathleen 4 месяца назад +84

there's a huge community of disabled fiber artists (myself included!) since it's such a low-intensity hobby, so if an event for fiber artists isn't accessible it gets a LOT of attention in our space lol

    • @leagaillard755
      @leagaillard755 4 месяца назад +35

this is truly unsurprising btw, because a massive chunk of the crafting community is disabled themselves. she likely kept at least 30% of the attendees from having an accessible event, at the LOW end

The last time I went to a convention I ended up with awful fibromyalgia pain in my feet and legs because my dumb ass wore secondhand cosplay boots with no tread on a slippery convention hall floor. I cannot *imagine* trying to navigate a crowded event situated on a muddy hill. What a nightmare.

As long as the transactions cleared and their insurance covered rain they don't care. I'm curious to know how they figured their claim, if the individual vendors were supposed to handle the event re: their own business/homeowner insurance and which carriers actually paid claims, this whole thing is an enormous test of the "craft circuit" insurance writers and the way they handle disasters like this....
And I wonder about a class-action suit, this was absolutely avoidable, even right up to the gate.
"So sorry, we have to send you home. It's not safe today. We will email you all before midnight, but we have to clear out so we can get dry and figure out how to fix this. We're so sorry, we will do everything we can as soon as possible to let everyone know what's going on. OK, thanks, bye!"

And esp pointing out that it's bad enough if you're able-bodied -- I think a lot of ppl straight up forget about mobility aid users, and when they are considered, they aren't considered *enough* or are not asked what might be needed to make the event accessible. Anyways, thanks for being cool and evil!

I got a couple of bad herniated discs putting huge pressure on some nerve ends . This makes me struggle walking, carrying stuff, I need benches to rest on and the chronic pain is horrible. I’m on strong pain killers and still struggle to walk. (I’m having surgery this fall). I’ve lived like this for 1,5 year and it’s opened my eyes SOOOO MUCH when it comes to accessibility etc. My closest grocery store got renovated and suddenly the cat food is behind a damn concrete pillar which I can’t reach anymore because of pain and lack of mobility. This is just a tiny detail but I notice all the details now. I can’t believe people in 2024 still don’t recognize different needs and still don’t make stuff accesible for everyone. I mean just shut up and take my money right?! Don’t they want my disabled dollars? Lol. I have HUGE respect for everyone living with a disability, they’re the most badass people on this planet. ❤
Edit: I’m not a native English speaker so let me know if ‘disabled’ is the wrong term to use! ❤

I have a lot of experience with tabletop game conventions/events, and I've been to some pretty fun/well run ones on that front! Also some great zine fests/small press-focused art events. LA Zine Fest, Seattle Zine Fest, and Short Run Comix and Art Expo are all events I'd strongly recommend to a friend.
Seattle Zine Fest is new this year, I tabled at it and made more than I'd ever made at a zine fest before. There were *zero* tabling fees for vendors, high quality masks were required, air purifiers were running, and there were staff circulating regularly with masks and ice water to make sure vendors and attendees were comfy and hydrated. Made it feel a lot more safe and accessible, and there was great communication about event logistics from the organizers as well.

    (Sorry this is long & a bit personal… 😭😭😭)
I’ve been watching your videos semi-regularly for a while now. And I also knit, so this video really piqued my interest!!
This is quite personal, but I’m also physically disabled. So I really appreciated how you brought up how inaccessible this con was, for its disabled attendees! ❤️
One of the reasons I love knitting as much as I do, is because it’s such an accessible hobby! (And unfortunately, the world is usually quite inaccessible to me. So that makes me appreciate that about it even more!)
This is even more personal (talking about my specific physical problems…) but, I have quite severe balance issues. (And I also have epilepsy...)
So I legit have to use a walker whenever I go to a public place of any kind!!! 😭😭
^But the thing is, I’m young. And my legs still “work.” And I guess I also don’t really “look disabled” (if you took away my walker at least…😭) either. (Or whatever “looking disabled” means, anyway…💀💀)
^And because of that, able-bodied people, (especially the ones around my age, in my experience…) often overestimate my abilities.
They’ll assume I’m exaggerating. (or even sometimes that I’m “faking it” altogether!)
And obviously, that’s very hurtful to hear!
    TL;DR
Knitting’s there for me when the world isn’t.
And I just really appreciated the compassion you showed throughout this video towards disabled people! ❤ (Even if you didn’t talk about it thaaat much)
Because sadly, many able-bodied people don’t talk about/ listen to our struggles at all.

A festival I love attending is the BiAnnual fiddle festival at Barberville. It’s an old pioneer settlement in the middle of Florida. Super cool history, authentic folk music, crafts, and some vendors as well. I always have such a great time when I go.

I work a whole convention circuit and there's quite a few great cons. My favorite is MAGfest. It's East Coast so you might not be able to get out to it but it's Music Art and Games and there's a great vendor space, security is good, staff is helpful and nice, the congoers are great. It's got card games and rpgs and a huge room of arcade machines brought by collectors to be played for free by everyone. There's LAN games and games projected onto walls. There's concerts to attend and musicians set up throughout the halls just jamming. There's a great artist's alley. There's a bunch of cool cosplay, you get everything from video game characters to anime to tv shows. It's basically just a fun con for nerdy people and the hotel/con center is huge and has plenty of room. Even when it's crowded I've never felt unsafe. So if I can recommend just one con to you, it's MAGfest. Happens in January!

the Houston quilt festival has been great all the times I've been. They have all sorts of vendors and displays, you can sign up for classes for different crafts or lessons, they do a lot more than just quilting stuff. I'm not a quilter and haven't personally signed up for any classes, but just walking through all the booths and seeing what it has to offer is a really fun experience. It's super big too, like I spent multiple days walking through it and still didn't see everything. It's all indoors and air conditioned too, definitely recommend

I've said this before the last time I watched a video about this, the lack of disability access at a yarn event is especially appalling. Crafting of any kind, but especially yarnwork, is really popular with the elderly and people who have disabilities, especially those that affect mobility, because it's very accessible. It's appalling that any event won't take this into consideration, but especially one that has a predominantly huge fanbase with the kind of people who would need it.

Library of over 1k board games and the organizers (from the Dice Tower youtube channel) are super nice. A lot of the anime cons are shitshows, not the convention itself but the drama fallout of what happens at them 😒 I've heard renfaires are fun. Other than that the small local conventions are usually run pretty well, even if they're boring.

I've been to one convention and it was awesome. Monster Mania Con (I specifically went to the one in New Jersey, but they have them all over). If you're a horror fan I recommend it. The only thing is that both from my event as well as other ones I've heard about- it is kind of common for guests to cancel due to filming and stuff. I'm sure this happens with other cons that have actor-type guests, but it seems like it happens a little extra often there, so buyer beware ig. They do try to replace them with other people, sometimes from the same movie if they can, so I'd say as long as you're planning on seeing like multiple actors and won't be too upset if 1 or 2 aren't there it's good.
I had a great time, but like I said, be aware that shit can happen.

3:14 "approximately two - no 3 staff" if it's approximately two then the clarification of 3 isn't needed, let alone that you can't have approximately two, because approx. would indicate there is a possibility of one which would question are they might be worried they are seeing double.

I've only had experience vending at local pride festivals and that's always been great aside from the extreme heat since it happens in June and I live in Texas. I want to try having a booth at some larger conventions and other events but it can be hard to find them sometimes and to know if it will be a good investment.
From a visitor standpoint I definitely recommend checking out smaller local events. It seems like a lot of them get worse as they get bigger but I'm not sure.

I've been organising cons and larps and helped at few film festivals, and I love watching videos about failed events, just to feel a bit better about my failures, because mine are very minor. To organise an event, you either need very detailed plan and highly capable people with years of experience, or you need money to hire those people and solve things by throwing money at the problem. I don't know about US, but in Scandinavia con organisers talk to each other and share knowledge on what has worked and what didn't. There has been a clear culture clash when Worldcon has been in Europe, since the US way of organising cons is a bit.... chaotic, so I'm not surprised by the failures.

You asked about cons and festivals and such that aren't disasters - learning about this and seeing retrospectives on Dashcon lately has been making me feel really grateful/relieved that the local Pride Month event I've been helping to organize for a couple years now has been going as well as it has. It's a much smaller deal and it isn't perfect, but we get more interest every year and improve on our planning and accessibility each time we do it. I'm proud of how much care and effort we put in - and the result that is we consistently get comments from attendees saying how much better they like our little event than the bigger, more corporate competing pride event. 🤭

There are great conventions for bakers such as Cookie Con and So Flo cake and candy expo. Another on the east cost is Jersey Shore Cake and Cookie convention. These all are tailored to a range of interest baking levels, beginners, home bakers and professionals. Regardless of your interests, cool things to see in the vendor hall and then there are always competition cakes and cookies and cool stuff to look at. The good conventions know what their attendees are interested to do and see and take their feedback.
