- In this video, Harry and George show off Big H's Ken Lawrence Explorer. It was inspired by James Hetfield's custom guitar made by Ken in 1993. Almost an exact replica of Papa Het's except for the inlay, which we're sure Harry cried over forever about.

You can get one online. If you contact Ken Lawrence on his official Facebook page, he will send you a link with what guitar shape you want, pickups configuration, woods, etc. But expect to pay handsomely
@Rory Goodchild $7k USD++ from what I've seen.
@Rory Goodchild it starts at just above $8k but most of the time it’s more than that. Usually $9k or $10k.
$10,000. .....but worth every penny
The Luthier who taught Ken to build guitars, Steve Helgeson of Moonstone Guitars, made the templates Ken used to make his explorers. Ken borrowed them to make his guitars. I've been working for Moonstone for a year and a half now and we have another model like these that are a smaller body. Ken makes some beautiful guitars. Just giving you another bit of history on the guitars
What a beatiful headstock
Loving these videos!!
Before you explained why the inlay was misplaced I was thinking "This guy has a fake KL", but after I think it's super cool how that makes yours unique! I have one coming down the pipe, just got to wait 3ish years 😂
this has to be the funniest guitar review I've ever seen. I lost at the end when it said you guys were from NJ. I'm from NJ. Explains everything.
Another awesome guitar Harry. Do a video for each of your guitars. Please keep em coming.
Thanks guys for the amazing backstories and features on all your Metallica guitars!! I love this channel! \m/
The ESP Explorers have been and always will be my favourite guitars. I picked up An MX220 back in 1989 for 900$. They're so iconic like a Flying V or a Stratocaster, and their sound is so good. Truly one of the best guitars ever made.
Ken can make the inlay with minor changes now he's done it a ton...I have the exact same KL but opted for a Phoenix inlay and Ken is now working on my next explorer. He's the best and he does insane work as long as you're very patient and are willing to pay :)
Peter Karas
Have you seen the one ken made that’s dark and has a bookmarked top behind the bridge it looks like a wizard some say owl.
the best looking one Iv seen yet!!!
Everyone should pick up Hetfield's new book Messengers. Some misconceptions in here. Ken Lawrence and James both go into their relationship and the details of all his KL guitars.
I'm not a big fan of explorer, but the James models (ESP or Ken Lawrence) are beautiful pieces of wood! This particular model is one of the most perfect guitars. Every detail, especially that headstock. This guy is a lucky guy to have the band's most special guitars.
What is the wood of humbucker frames?
The Flying V was not custom made/ordered by James. It was initially ordered by an unanimous customer who then decided to give the guitar to James as a present. :)
also the doubble neck KL explorer . with two 6 string necks (?)
I'm looking to build (or have a luthier build for me) a KL style guitar. Not necesarilly a Hetfield replica, but an Exolorer in the style of KL with a few modifications here and there. This vid was very interesting! Thanks!
I want it :( I still can't find one in Mexico, where can I buy one online?
Meh, find your own style. Make the firebird cool. Or a parker fly. Mod a tele. Het’s style fits Het and very few others.
First of all Hetfield did not play a Ken Lawrence explorer at Woodstock 94. I don't think Ken made that guitar till late 94 or early 95 because you never see it till they start promoting Load.
i agree
SuckerFreeGear true cause before that I see mostly the black ESP explorers.
he used it in woodstock 99 not 94
Oh yeah, that's great piece of wood, I really love this guitar, prefect shape. I know many things about Load Tour, this Ken Lawrence sounds extremely perfect on clean sound (I know James had Triaxis preamps and stuff), btw the 2nd great guitar is ESP Explorer MX250 Elk Skull (you probably know what I'm talking about, Cunning Stunts intro, So What and Creeping Death), I searching this guitar but there is not many things about this guitar, maybe someday I will make a replica od Elk Skull.
I would like to know, if possible, the measure of body thickness of this wonderful guitar.... Thanks...
Ken Lawrence explorer = heellllll yyeeaahh!!!
Ken Lawrence made Hetfield’s 1st Explorer in 1996.
Awesome vid! Its great to see the Tallicaxe collection
but...
wheres the kh1 :'( lol
that's my question! haha
The head stock is the sickest part
where is the guitar?? I can't see it ;p
Harry, this might be a crazy question, but I believe I met you and your mother at the Metallica concert in Albany ....I took a picture of you for my youtube channel's Albany episode which will be up tomorrow night ...I'm just wanting to make sure I'm not crazy ....I remember being surprised that your mom was such a fan ...ended up on the rail and got a little interaction with James during the show? Please clarify that this was you and not your doppleganger!
7:54 That V was actually gifted to him by an anonymous fan after it was made for them. facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10151210682987086
Play clean damn it!!
The V was an anonymous gift from a fan.
Took over 13 and a half minutes to actually hear it 😂
Jesus, how precious is James Hetfield about his shit. I've seen another rig rundown where they choose not to disclose aspects of James' rig where he gets his signature sound. I mean, how many millions of fucking dollars does he want to make? It's not like someone having his guitar or tone is going to devalue a brand like Metallica. I feel sorry for Kirk, Jason & Rob.
Too fast man at the end
It does sound horrible on its own.. Outstanding woods, parts and craftsmanship but from the sound perspective, might as well attach strings to dried mud pieces, which an artist of James Hetfield's caliber could still make sound amazing with all his gear and production.
It's hilarious how much you guys try and yet the tone sounds way too scooped and thin.
@@beaumondeguitars James' first Explorer from Ken (Tribal Hunting Scene) was made in '96. Today James owns 7 KL guitars.
Give it to me please hahhahaaa
I might be crazy... but it seems to me that the people with the most sought after guitars can’t play for shit. This is a prime example. Enter sandman? The absolute worst/easiest song they ever wrote? I’d be severely embarrassed
I agree....all that money on guitars and can’t play shit
Prove it ain't from China please. Thanks
its fucking fake, I knew Steve r.i.p. the fellow who taught Ken and I know Ken. my shop was right above his on Samoa Blvd in Arcata ca. That is a fucking knock off ... theres a 3 year wait at minimum to get one , and that only if you are fortunet enough to get on that list
How does those facts support your theory that this guitar is fake ? What other proof do you have ? Looks verry much legit to me
Yeah it doesn’t seem legit at all 😂
Too much talking...
