This by far the best video for explaining the heat pump itself and the Nest thermostat. All the information provided in this video is just what is needed.

Thank you! I was freaking out a little setting up a nest in my new house because previously I had a very simple system and now I have dual heat and I kept seeing all the warnings about how I could mess up my system. I understand that I’m not a pro and I still could mess it up but these are the same exact wires that I have available to me other than the emergency heat asterisk one. I didn’t necessarily need this video to set it up (already had it done just wanted to double check) but I don’t like setting something like this up without knowing what the wires mean so I really appreciate it.

Thank you! Your video saved the day for me as I was installing Nest Learning thermostat for my heat pump HVAC system in Pflugerville, TX. Your graphic with red outlines was the clincher as I had 7 wires. There were no wiring diagrams provided by Nest engineers, which is so basic for HVAC system variations. Great video and very much appreciate your knowledge and teaching abilities.

Thank you so much for this video! I thought I followed the Nest installation instructions exactly, but there was nothing to indicate special wiring for a heat pump. I mis-wired and put the O/B wire in the W1 (like it told me to do...) and got heat only. Thanks for the education!!!

This video made my day, after 3 different visits from 3 Professional HVAC they couldn't figure this out. Not too mention the $150 dollars they charged me each time. They would either get my heat pump only producing heat or only cooling. They never connected the reversing valve wire from the control board to the thermostat as the wire is spliced in the middle. I did this myself after confirming and chasing down the wires. I noticed they were both not connected on either end. After watching this video I was able to understand what each wire did and then relate it to my issue.

Just wanted to add a bit of info about heat pumps: Auxilary heat also engages when the heat pump enters "defrost mode" which, (much like a freezer) occurs when the "evaporator" (outdoor coil in this case) ices over tripping the sensor which causes the reversing valve to disengage, turning the system back into an "air conditioner". This causes cold air to blow inside the house. (ya, in heat mode!) So to offset the temperature split, the electric heat strips engage simultaneously until the defrost cycle completes, and the system returns to normal "heat pump" operation (extremely inefficient way to do your heat).

Hello. I think this comment helps with my issue. I have a heat pump that is tuning off before getting to the set point temperature and starts blowing cold air inside in heat mode. I think is because I connected the aux heat (w2) but I don't have the auxilary electric strip ( optional accesory). Should I disconnect the W2 cable? Or adjust some setting in the Nest thermostat?

    • @chicenburger
      @chicenburger Год назад

@@davidportillo6006 Whats the outside air temperature? If the unit is going into defrost because its too cold outside but you dont have an "emergency" electric heat strip, it will blow cold. Although noone should have ever let there be no heat strips unless you live in South Florida, its more likely that the heat strip isnt engaging either because of relay, board, or T-stat.

This was a huge help. Double checked what Google sent me and they had me wiring my heat pump up like a dual fuel setup. This was confusing to me as I have no gas lines going to the house at all. Not entirely their fault as whoever installed the system originally ran the Aux heat as a white wire plugged into a W1 terminal and a black wire plugged into terminal with 2 labels W2/X2 which has to be emergency heat.

I made the mistake of installing a Google Nest thermostat on a 110 degree Saturday afternoon. The old thermostat had a white wire going into a W1(O/B) position. I carelessly put this wire in the Nest's W1 position. The system started blowing hot air instead of cool air. The outside box was blowing cool air and I noticed that it said it was a heat pump. Another site said there could be a problem if we had a heat pump system.
Upon further inspection, I saw that the label said "O/B". I switched the white wire into the O/B position and now the system in blowing cool air.
    Thank you very much!

Thank you! This fixed my problem! I installed a nest e thermostat late last spring. When in cooling mode, my draft inducer fan (for heating) was turning off and on continuously when the air conditioner was running. After what you said about sometimes using the "common" wire, it turns out that I had to connect the blue wire to the "C" terminal and also to the "C" terminal on the furnace circuit board. My old t-stat did not use this wire. The nest e directions did not require me to do this. It solved my issue, no more draft inducer fan running during the cooling mode. THANKS!

Hi there, I have a similar problem but in heat mode and emergency heat option. After that our Nest stopped working with the WiFi is getting bad, looks like it’s trying to connect find a connection even if you want to used just like a thermostat with “Do Not Connect” option and sometimes it’s doing a fast reset that doesn’t works because all the time the Nest never find a signal automatically or manually. Now our Heater is turning On and Off every 1 second when the temperature is close to the set temperature and I need to down the temperature to turning Off, so I believe that our system will damage soon. Do you know what’s going on?

This helped me so much. I had an ollllld thermostat that used none of the newer coding so that didn’t help. My common was Black instead of the blue 🤷‍♂️. Then I had a jumper from W2 to E with the white wire on E. In googles setup it says “remove all jumpers as they aren’t needed” but doesn’t explain why.
And Google just immediately recommended a professional install. They could definitely use some of that Google money to have better instructions.

Great video & clear explanations! I live in Hawaii & only have a 2 stage cooling system (Y1 +Y2). I'm trying to install a safety shut off switch on the condensate drain line. Switch instructions say install inline with the RED wires. When I test the RED shutoff connections - the power is lost to the NEST & the AC air handler keeps running - not the desired outcome to shut down the AC. What would you recommend for the shut off inline wiring please?

Oh my goodness! Thank you so much for this amazing video. I feel so smart now fixing the heat pump issue myself. I had warm air, but it would not start my unit outside, so I figured it is a heat pump issue. I checked the wires (which I installed initially) and just pressed the OB cable a bit further in, despite being properly in. Nest recognized some changes in wiring and prompted me to change my heating options, among one of them being the heat pump. Cranked up the target temperature and lo and behold
, AC unit outside kicked on.
My question is, is the heat pump heating option going to be less expensive then without. Since I had heat already without using the pump. Thank you!! I will subscribe to your channel.

I live in Southern Florida and my cooling/heating system uses a heat pump. The thermostat I currently have is a Carrier and has one wire that connects to a O/W2/B port. With the nest, I assume this wire would be connected to the OB port - if that is correct, would the heating coil in the heat pump system turn on if the temperature dropped too low in my house even though there would be no wire connected to the W2/auxiliary heat port? Or does a jumper somehow need to be run between the OB and W2 ports for the coil to turn on?

I will be buying a nest thermostat soon and I have always wondered why I have only one red wire but a RC and a RH connection. Makes a lot of sense now that you have explained it. I have a question, I assume the W1 and W2 are probably interchangeable as well is that correct? This is my color scheme, I have a Yellow, Red, Orange, White, Green and Blue. I have a tan also but I believe that's for some kind of remote temperature sensor not sure. But anyway that's for the great video.

You could fish new wires to the thermostat. Or if running wires would be a big project you could relocate the thermostat next to the HVAC system where it would be easier to run new wires. Since most of the time you could control the thermostat: amzn.to/3omfvmu from the phone or with Alexa. You can also install Nest thermostat temperature sensors: amzn.to/37sSpEC so that you dial in the heating and cooling to the location your existing thermostat was located or to hold the setpoint for another part of your home.

Have a furnace for heat and a heat pump for cooling. I only want to use the heat pump for cooling, not heating as the furnace is more efficient. Curious to know how you would wire this setup

I have a question about my system. I have seven wires at my Honeywell but two are in the "W2" or "Aux" terminal. I have electric hot air with a central air unit as well. I contacted Nest for support but that was useless.

Thank you for the video. The client has a heat pump and wants to control cooling and heating from baseboard heaters (boiler). Would it be right to disconnect W1 and tie the wire from the boiler control board to W2? On the other hand, he wants to have an emergency T-stat to turn on the heat from the heat pump. Can we do it through the main T-stat using emergency contact? Or it should be a different decision?

Ok so I am so confused, I have watched all the videos and none describe what I have. I have a AC/heatpump outside. But I also have a furnace downstairs that runs off oil. I only have 1 R wire on my old thermostat.
    I have Y O G R C W E
Those are my old thermostat wiring.
In the nest, do I hook the E to the star and the W to the W1 on the nest to still have both my heatpump and my furnace as emergency after if gets below 35 degrees outside? Because right now, my thermostat runs off heatpump 35 and up and the oil kicks on at 35 and below.

Thanks for the overview guide. I'm curious if the Nest can be wired to run a gas furnace for auxiliary heat. I'm considering adding a heat pump to my existing heat-only HVAC system and would like to use the furnace when the hear pump would be overtaxed by the exterior temperature (more efficient than the resistive coil). I've also heard of a UK smart device from Homely Energy that will run your heat pump based on current weather conditions and electricity prices. Would be great if that could be combined with a nest for automation.

Thanks for your videos. I don't have a c wire and want to install my nest thermostat. I have the c wire adapter kit that you put on the furnace. I have it hooked up but can't get it to work. How would I hook up the 4 wires to the thermostat after having the adapter on?

I have a 5 ton MRCOOL UNIVERSAL, on the AHU there is a only w1 terminal to activate the element. Does that mean I should have no wire on the * in the nest learning?
In my case should the nest handle AUX and Emergency over the same W1 wire?
Will I still have emergency option if I redo the software setup? Currently have emergency setup over the * as forced hot air, it's definitely not engaging the emergency heat and I don't think jumperig is the way to go here

Thanks for the video. I need this but still not sure how to wire this up. I have an orange wire that was ran to W1 on my old thermostat and I’m thinking I wired it wrong since I have a heat pump. Does the orange wire need to goto OB spot? My outside unit is not kicking on and just blowing cold air for about 20 minutes and then my heat 2 kicks in and then I have heat. Any info would be much appreciated. TIA!!

Do you have a wire for wire color coded some heat pump thermostats arent the same colors or labeled to keep you from being able to do this

Hi - I currently have a Lennox Elite XC16S036 unit, and looking to convert the thermostat to a Nest one. I can account for the Red, White, Blue, and Yellow wires, but I can't understand why there is a Green wire going into the "B" if my Lennox Elite XC16S036 isn't a Heat Pump? Looking for some advice, and thank you for sharing your wisdom!

Your videos are informative and helpful, but my heat pump wiring has only has four wires (with two jumpers) and thus far nothing has worked on the Nest. The jumper between the Y and W troubles me.

Love your videos, thanks. I have a heat pump but my old wiring has two bridges, one from Rc to Rh and one from W to Y. I have the white wire going directly to Y before bridging to W and other than that I only have the orange wire going to O. So I am not sure how to reconfigure these bridges to the Nest?

Hi, I have the exact same issue. Old system bridged Y to W. I tried connecting the Y only (and O, G, and Rh) on the Nest but only cooling works, not heat. Any suggestions much appreciated!

I can not figure mine out. It will turn the blower on but I’m not getting heating or cooling. I have used a couple nests on other heat pump units but my brand new home I can not get it to heat or cool.

You have a good explanation about how the system work. I have a heat pump at home and my old thermostat has only four solid color wires (White, Yellow, Red, and Green) from the wall. I am about to replace my Carrier Infinity System thermostat with the NEST that I just bought this week. Pepco gives me $100 rebate, so I only paid $150 via Lowes's store. When I opened my old thermostat up, it consists of white, yellow, red and green and the old thermostat terminal labeled A, B, C, D, S1, and S2. What's the heck? By watching your video, I plan to connect white wire to W2, yellow wire to Y1, Red wire to Rc, and Green wire to G. I hope it works. Please, let me know if I'm wrong. Thanks,

I’d check your indoor unit where the fan is first and see how those colors match up on the unit. You may not have a C, Common, wire which is needed to power the nest fully. If that’s the case this guy has another video for that issue and has an amazon link to parts you’ll need.

      @@brianhundley833,
Thanks for your response. I called A/C shop which installed my unit. The answer is "NO". Nest thermostat won't work with Carrier Infinity heat pump because it uses binary code. That's why Infinity uses less wires and easy to hook up. I need to buy Carrier digital thermostat to make it works, but it's not cheap. It runs about $600. So, I keep my old one and keep operate it manually instead of phone access.

Great video. However, I did not hear you discuss how to connect a Nest Learning Thermostat (3rd Gen) when you have both a Blue and Orange wires coming from the furnace controller board since the Nest only has a single O/B connection. I tried connecting Orange to O/B and Blue to C, but it does not power the Nest. So what do you do?

I have a dual fuel system with a heat pump and a gas fired furnace as backup, using a 3rd gen Nest thermostat. The heat pump is working fine, but the gas furnace is not turning on when the outside temperature drops below the setpoint where the heat pump should shut off. Not sure if i should be wiring the brown wire to the * terminal, the white wire to the W1? or some other combination? My confusion may lie in whether the gas furnace is emergency heat, or is it auxillary heat? any help would be appreciated in the wiring diagram. Or maybe it is the equipment settings that i need to change?
