  • Thanks for the prayers and comments regarding Trav’s hands! They are healing quickly so we are thankful :)
Also, sorry for the slightly shorter vlog this week. It was difficult for Trav to film/edit while his hands were healing!
As always, thanks for watching! We appreciate our RUclips fam so much!

Why not consider a screened in porch off the back of the house, that way you are protected from the elements and bugs too! We love watching y'all! ❤❤❤

DECK - if you live in an area where you get snow and ice, the cement slab will start to crack within a couple years. SO I think it would depend on your climate... I am so glad that Travis healed quick. Sometimes we don't have time to think things through, and instinct tells us to stop ourselves from falling, so your instincts kicked in, and I would image most of us have done exactly what you have done.

    • @aj25055

If that cement is laid correctly it’ll be fine. Key word: correctly!

@@aj25055 hahaha... I am in Eastern Canada, it is probably very different here. We rarely do cement because it does crack with the freezing and thawing of the ground.

Honestly go w/ the deck ! Concrete can b really hot to walk on during the summer ( it retains heat much stronger than a wooden surface will ) and on that note , I believe Trav has endured enough heat for the entire Clark family ! Hope your back too 100% soon Trav .

I highly recommend a deck over concrete with little ones. A deck, especially if you use a composite like Trex, becomes an extension of your house. I went with Trex on mine since my grandson was just learning to walk. It was peace of mind not to worry about him falling and getting hurt.

  • @raylew311
    @raylew311 Год назад +24

Feel better soon! Regarding deck vs patio I'd recommend a trex deck (worth the extra splurge) it's much easier to maintain and more kid friendly. Also, I'm not sure why but in my experience the stone patios look nice but attract a lot of those tiny red spiders.

Feel better, you guys are such an inspiration. As a contractor, that is one of the only decks I recommend to clients looking for less maintenance. A wood deck needs to be sealed regularly, which adds up, and if overlooked, the deck will start to break down.

I have had both concrete slab and a deck. I think the concrete was more flexible and much easier to maintain over the years. It provide hours of fun for the toddler preschool ages and I didn't feel so separated from them when they were in the yard playing. I bought a cheap "grass like" carpet from home depot and it was awesome. Travis, I hope you are all better now. Hailey is growing so quickly and is so adorable. -The concrete and deck are both good for chalk
-sometimes decks can get gross because birds make nests in the wood.
-Concrete is fun for scooters or bikes

-And concrete can be a safety hazard

I loved this video! My favorite so far! Travis, glad your hands are better. Ya'll are a beautiful family...each one of you. Have you ever thought of screening in a porch? It would help with mosquitos and other pesky insects. Plus, depending on the size Hailey would have plenty of room to move around safely. Do a covered deck, and you could add a ceiling fan and furniture and later even add a screen for bugs. Also, you could use underneath the deck for storage. If you're worried about splinters, they make paint (various colors) that not only protect the longevity of the deck but also help with the splinters.

Composite deck would be best. Where you are in NJ and you get frost the frozen ground can crack the concrete pad. (Unless you dig deep but very expensive to pour a lot of concrete.) Composite won’t give you splinters and is easy to clean and maintain. Then you can put an indoor/outdoor rug on it for Hailey while she is still crawling. Super cute video with the Cowgirl hat!! ❤

Also deck- go concrete! If you can afford it, it’s a one and done job. You can get it stained and stamped to look like brick or pavers or flat- you can get it multiple levels so a step down to a shorter landing pad too. Kids are toddlers for a hot minute and learn rules fast but an outdoor rug would be cool even a baby gate or baby play pen on top a rug would be cool. Wood is nice too but it rots or needs to be stained and sealed and can get slick depending if it rains so babies can still get into trouble on them as well.

Glad your hands are healing Travis. I can tell ya, we have a concrete slab & it gets really hot!!! Best suggestion would be do a deck. You can use the deck material Trek Decking (I think that’s what’s it called) it’s not wood so it’s suppose to last much longer. You can still put a pretty outdoor area rug down for a little softness. Definitely put on rails & a gate for baby girls protection🤗

Get a concrete deck. It will ĺast so mucĥ longer than a wood deck. It will be so wortĥ it. Besides Hailey can ride her little plastic tricycle on it. You can put some carpet cushion under a rug for her to play on. Save some money and build the framing yourself. That way you can ĝet a bigger slab poured. Get Katie's brother's up there for a weekend and help them do it. I'm 68 years old and I actually framed up and rebarred a 10'×10' slab by myself. Did the dry pour method and oh my word. It's held together so far A-OK since the first of March. I'm in southern Va and was quoted $1400. I spent $375 on supplies. Watched many RUclips videos. May have taken me longer tò do it but it's dòne and done right too.😂 Thank you Jesus!🙌

Go for a concrete patio that has footers around the perimeter so you can later cover it snd make it a 4 season room or an addition. The deck you have to replace eventually snd also maintain it over time. They also get animals and spiders and other critters underneath them.

    • @emildejulio1085

I’ve also had our concrete slab for over 20 years and it has yet to crack or do anything. You need to get a proper base under the slab so it can drain and it won’t crack. Get fiber reinforced concrete. I live in indiana and we go thru a lot of freeze thaw cycles.

We have a wooden deck. Would NEVER do that again bc of upkeep. It's a yearly pressure wash and staining, which stain is EXPENSIVE. Plus wood splinters off badly here in NC bc of the heat. You don't want baby crawling or walking on splintered wood. Not a lot of upkeep for concrete except some easy pressure washing on occasion. Glad your hands healed quickly. ❤️

Feel better soon Travis. Hailey is cuteness overload, her smile and her wearing the cowboy hat, she is just so precious. 🥰 Hailey just melts our hearts. Love your beautiful family. ❤
I would say go with concrete for your back porch.

For ur deck id 100% say wood. It just looks so nice and a country feel. Plus if Hailey or future kids want to play on the backyard its safer.

Team concrete! We have had a concrete patio for ten years and love it! You don't have nearly as much maintenance with concrete. We live in Illinois - land of snow, ice, and derechos - concrete has held up excellent. Also, Ellie is BEAUTIFUL!!! She has grown up so quickly!

Unless it is a vinyl deck which is very costly I’d only do a patio. Decks require so much work. Bees and other bugs attach themselves. Must do the upkeep for staining and preserving. Stamped concrete is very beautiful.

Glad your hands are healing!! I think it's a toss up on deck vs cement patio. I think having a cement patio gives you more options such as playing with chalk, riding a little trike, playing with water toys, bouncing a ball, etc. The rug idea would be a plus on the patio. Decks are great but need more maintenance. If the patio is done right, make sure it gets textured so it's not slick. If you have a drive way and or side walk to ride bikes on or trikes, little cars etc. you may not need the patio. If you're always in the back, I would do the concrete patio. Hailey is such a beauty and brings me joy to see her smile!

100% concrete patio...... wood deck has a lot of upkeep with water sealant/stain every few years. Another option is composite boards.... higher cost than wood but no upkeep.

OUCH, take of those hands.. Frontier Days rodeo has been around since the 1880's.. Do the concrete patio, we love ours, had it for 35 years.. Concrete lasts a lot longer.. Fall on concrete, fall down deck stairs..

When y’all said you were going to a rodeo, I was like where is Hailey’s cowgirl hat, then you put one on her and oh my word SHE IS ADORABLE!! She looked so much like daddy when she was born now I see a lot of mommy coming out!! I would get a deck and make it into a screened in porch, I love mine. Then if you want to add a patio or more deck off the steps you can!! Can’t wait to see what y’all decide!!

Concrete deck is SO GREAT once she's older and riding a little tricycle and then later a bike or scooter, depending on how big it is. We moved into a house with a small deck, a large concrete area and then grass. My boys, now 4 and 8, spend so much (safe from traffic and strangers) time out back riding scooters together 😊. Three years ago, when my youngest was one, he did well on the concrete, playing at the water table and other toys. I was worried about him falling and scrapes, which did happen, but really just once or twice, and not bad. Mother's discretion, though 😉

Deck CON !- Wood for decks is treated with chemicals! I believe it’s so that it doesn’t rot or get bugs in it. I don’t know that much about it, but when I was looking to buy wood for an indoor table, the Home Depot guy stopped me and said I was accidentally buying outdoor treated wood which would be harmful for me to have inside. It’s probably not as bad outside, but I wouldn’t take a chance with a baby. Also, keep her away from any paints. My sister went into convulsions when she was 2 because she was outside with my dad while he was painting. That was a long time ago, paint is hopefully not as harmful now, but it’s still better to be safe. 😊
