This is a heartbreaking aria: so well sung by both. And many thanks for the lyrics. Beautiful singing, heartbreaking lyrics and the emotions are so heartfelt. One would think Radames would at least consider Amneris.
This is my opinion: Radames is more or less a bonehead. A man of valor yet conflicting loyalties. But he drew the line at love. (I would have tried to have it both ways.) I don't know what I'm talking about. There's international intrigue going on here that supercedes the lives of mere people. Awww, just let me say it. This opera points my attention towards imperialism. There, now you get my drift. And I don't have to talk about emotion and beauty and compassion, do I? No, I don't.
@@brucer9572 Yes you do. Why? Because this is opera. It is not just about international intrigue. It is about gorgeous music, heartbreaking lyrics, wonderful singing as well as character analysis and the forces affecting their choices.
The Vienna people absolutely adore the Great Domingo, and with good reason. He and Agnes have collaborated so well over the years. Bravi! In this clip, they both still sound amazing once they get their feet planted, so to speak. Around this time, 2005, he does start to feel the years in the top of his voice and so he knew it was time to ease back. That he's interpreting baritone roles now is ok with me and all the people still buying tickets to see him perform. He's certainly not the first opera singer to foot the stage while well into their golden years, and he will not be the last, trust me. As long as he sells tickets, no opera house will turn him away. Mil gracias por compartir este documento historico de dos artistas finas.
With this performance and knowing that both Baltsa and Domingo actually played Santuzza and Turiddu at a 1990 version of Cavalleria Rusticana, makes perfect sense why a lot of people sees a common path between both Santuzza and Amneris development, being the only difference that one is a main coprotagonist and the other is the main antagonist on their respective stories (and Santuzza slightly more soprano-like than Amneris herself should be), and even both getting a curse scene at the key break point on their own, though Amneris does this to the Priests of Isis including Ramfis after Radames trial and sentence punishment which she in vain attempts to undone and atone pleading for it so on her curse against them she kinda foresees the doom of Egyptian religion later on, whereas Santuzza does a looming doom for Turiddu on breaking with her.
Agnes Baltsa sings AMAZINGLY eventhough it´s another more soprano-like approach to Amneris character which makes her actually closer to Aida herself and henceforth harder to being easily differenciated by both the audience and Radames on how to choose between them on relevance, whereas usually seems it works better when she is more contralto-like then so the contrast is more striking albeit on that voice diferentiation, her role is even improved on the own vocal color and other feature attributes to each voice type on their own without the issue of getting complicated for confusion as both more alike between themselves. Still it´s a very VALID ALTERNATIVE for Amneris development too, and that´s why herself - as Carmen too - happens to be a full central archetypical MEZZO at core whchi might go into closer to soprano in their highest and closer to contralto at the lowest, and something else in between on the middle as a true MEZZO ought to be, and well it seems all kinds of mezzos might acheive it on their own, eventhough lower ones have a special upper hand as a proper Dramatical Mezzo type must be.
E vuoi ch’io viiiiiiiiiiva : it’s one of the most great High B Flat Crash dome by DOMINGO , but he’s fine anyway . I love Him ..... and to be honest I love both of them !!!
Baltsa's unparalleled Amneris under Karajan was in about 1979 or 1980, this is 15 years later; Domingo has settled into his baritone roles, so I wasn't expecting him to sustain the B-flat, though I thought he might get nearer to it. But we're not here for high notes, we're here to watch two absolute masters who have sung these roles uncounted times for all the great houses. So it was all the more moving to hear Baltsa not only sing her first B-flat gloriously, but sing the whole phrase with arguably more abandon than in her famed recording. And how wonderful to see Domingo in recital, giving a full acting performance as well - singing to Baltsa as he would in performance. You can easily see why he was chosen to act in the movie versions of Carmen and Traviata. Check out the Karajan/Freni/Carreras/Baltsa Aida if you get a chance - Baltsa's performance is jaw-dropping in the judgement scene.
I was there ... The whole evening was so boring with all the stars in her prime .. and then these two old veterans in the dawn of her careers .. the audience was exited after 5 seconds ...
I love them as artists but he is old and she was never a dramatic mezzo even if she had temperament. She is somewhat a falcon in range but started as coloratura mezzo. Voice was never egalized but who cares?
I lost the count how many times I have seen this clip. Baltsa is unbeatable here. Bravoooo
So far the best amneris radames duet
Puikus duetas!
Profesionalai,atiduodantys save iki begalybės!
viva AGNES
grande temperamento e bella voce.
Viva la Baltsa, the lioness!
Superba Baltsa !
To anybody who says that she cannot sing: You are crazy!
She was great in the 70s. She’s bad here.

They sound bad. And overpowered by the orchestra.
BRAVA AGNES ! GRANDISSIMA !!!

25 years later, this was 2005
Gerai!
I'm dying
Brava Baltsa!!!
She spreads her voice so much. She is certainly not in the league of Simionato, Cossotto, Bumbry or many others. Domingo......nasal and throaty
Baltsa bravooooooooooooooooooo ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶
She outshines domingo soooooooo easily
And THAT folks is how the scene is sung! 😉
Really? Listen to Dominguez/Del Monaco ‘51 for how it actually should be sung.
Who is the excellent conductor?
Daniele Gatti !
Agnes Baltsa правит бал.
I was there ... The whole evening was so boring with all the stars in her prime .. and then these two old veterans in the dawn of her careers .. the audience was exited after 5 seconds ...
Both way past their prime.

Baltsa was great in the 70s.
due vocalità poco adatte à questo capolavoro .
non mi piace affatto .
Baltsa was great in the 70s, but not here.
Awful nasal Domingo
La Baltsa é é terribile...non é un mezzosoprano per cui pompa in basso per inventarsi un suono
stupito!!!

She was fabulous in the 70s, but she’s bad here.
@@vima8680 Not really. Baltsa had lost her technique by this point in her career, so she sounds bad.
